These tables show counts of offences. Offence counts are not equivalent to victim-based statistics. Northern Territory victim statistics are included in the annual published crime statistics.

The Northern Territory has a small population and certain offences show strong seasonal impacts. Therefore, the crime statistics can fluctuate considerably on a quarter to quarter basis, particularly at a regional level. These fluctuations should not, of themselves, be interpreted as changing trends in crime. The crime statistics are also subject to influence from changes in legislation, public behaviour in reporting crime and Police operations. Care should be used in attributing annual changes to a particular cause.

Offences are classified according to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Offence Classification, 2011, published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Offences are grouped by division, subdivision or group, depending on the type of offence. Within-group breakdowns are provided for break-in offences. These classifications differ slightly from those used in the Northern Territory Quarterly Crime & Justice Statistics series, which used an older classification system.

These statistics were prepared by the Research and Statistics Unit of the Northern Territory Department of the Attorney-General and Justice for use by Government agencies, other organisations, researchers and members of the public. A wider analysis of trends in NT crime statistics is released annually.

The information used to prepare these statistics was recorded by the Northern Territory Police in the Police Real-time On-line Management Information System and extracted on 1 February 2013. The system is frequently updated as new information comes to light. Therefore the statistics in these tables may differ slightly from those produced at an earlier or later date.
