NSW Report on Native Vegetation 2011-2013…
The NSW Government has pulled together a group of
reports to show how well their native vegetation
management programs is going. It includes report cards
for Native Vegetation and Woody Vegetation Change.
This report came out prior to the (gutless) fatal shooting of
a compliance officer in July 2014.
.AUGUST 2014
During 2012-2013, NSW took on conservation
of an extra 24,000 ha of native vegetation.
That’s 1.5 times the size of Royal NP.
For the same period, approval was given for
2,100 ha to be cleared, but only with offsets.
That’s about 7 times the size of Lane Cove NP.

The report also shows that heaps of areas are being
actively managed.
New property vegetation plans and forestry management
plans affected 1.3 million hectares. This is more than
previous years.
Areas covered by incentives from Commonwealth and
NSW governments are in here, so the data is really about
intended management rather than actual.

The Woody Vegetation Change report includes
actual change in native vegetation (2010-2011).
The satellites showed actual woody vegetation
clearing by crop, pasture and thinning was
around 5,400 ha.
The mix of clearing cause is interesting: forestry
57%, cropping/thinning 18%, fire 16%,
infrastructure 7%.

• The info and datasets made available with these reports are fantastic.
• Accounting for native vegetation has a long way to go yet, to give us a true and fair view of the state of NSW ecosystems.
• The reports don’t follow the model recently adopted for water accounting – which would show the ‘liability’ of outstanding clearing approvals, or the relative ‘value’ of offset areas.

You should always read the report itself before putting your reputation or any money on the line.
