National Survey of Student Engagement• Alternative to USNews• Based on educational research and actual student experiences• Surveys first-year and senior students• Five key benchmarks:

– Level of Academic Challenge– Student Faculty Interactions– Active and collaborative learning– Enriching Educational Experiences– Supportive Campus Environment

• Given by Augustana in 2003, 2006, and 2009• Comparative national user norms (640 institutions in 2009)

Augustana Context: Recent Developments that may have impacted our NSSE results

• A new general education curriculum (AGES)• A intentional effort to increase the amount of writing and other academic

efforts of first-year students• Introduction of an emphasis on consideration of multiple viewpoints

(“They Say, I Say”)• CSTL and other faculty development efforts focusing on teaching

techniques• A general increase in enrollment, requiring expansion of first-year course

sections• Recent hiring of several new tenure track faculty and faculty fellows along

with a phased retirement program for senior faculty

Notes on slide conventions:

• A “+” or “-” in a column designates differences that were statistically significant at a minimum level of 0.05. A blank entry indicates a difference that was not statistically significant at that level. All differences are as compared to the Augustana 2009 results for first-year students (FY) or senior students (SR).

• First-year level differences are colored blue and senior level differences are coded orange simply as a visual clue to the level for ease of reading.

• As the presenter’s editorial notations, items that are deemed a concern are noted with a red flag, results that appear notably favorable are noted with a green star. A blue star indicates areas that research indicates are particularly correlated with high student learning outcomes.

Please see handout for:• Student faculty out of class interactions- Does our outlier time

teaching in class mean we aren’t doing the job outside of class in advising, more informal interactions with students, etc.? (page 4)

• Student Self Reported Growth – Is there more growth reported now by students experiencing AGES? (page 9)
