Wander through the oldest surviving residence in the Wanneroo
district, built by the Cockman family in 1860. Situated in a rural setting
on the edge of Yellagonga Regional Park, the limestone-walled
house is furnished with items originally owned by the family. It was
constructed using local materials: the limestone was quarried nearby;
and the timber doors, windows, floorboards and roof came from the
local sawpit.
Outside is the old dunny (toilet), wash house, well and a grapevine
that is believed to be over 100 years old. The house and grounds are a
rare example of rural life once far removed from Perth but now located
in the metropolitan area.
