Dear Friends,My husband and I just returned from a 10 day vacation. It is wonderful to visit new places and see newthings but it is just as wonderful to return home. Thank you to our very capable staff and volunteers whokeep the NSC running smoothly. Each time I go away, I know that the Center is in good and capablehands who take great pride in serving our members and members of our community. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our WWII veterans! This year we celebrate the75th anniversary of the end of WWII. When I first came to the Center, Al Santoro did a salute to all ofour veterans. I was very surprised at the number of people, both men and women, who served in themilitary. We are very grateful for their service to our country.Thank you to the many volunteers who are working tirelessly during the month of October to make ourFall Sale a success. We are very grateful to all of our volunteers who keep our special events, fundraisersand programs going each and every day. As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, it may be the perfect time to practice gratitude. Many peoplebecome overwhelmed by what we think we want or need (or by what others think they need) and forgetto recognize what we have. You may be surprised by your change in disposition when you begin to thinkpositively about the good in your life. Gratitude can help us to reduce stress, improve our health andstrengthen relationships. Just a little food for thought – “Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into afeast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.” Melody BeattieHave a wonderful Thanksgiving.

WHY SHouLD I Pre-reGISTer? - Often, in thenewsletter, you will be asked to register at theReception Desk. It is important that you do so forseveral reasons.1. We sometimes cancel a class/trip due to low registration. If you are interested and do not signup, you might miss out on a class/trip that you areinterested in.2. If a class is cancelled and you are not registered,we can’t call you to notify you of the cancellation. Then you come to the Center and are disappointedthat you have made the trip for a cancelled class. 3. Instructors will often ask us for a number of registrations. This helps them to prepare for theclass and make the appropriate number of handouts. 4. Room assignments might be able to beadjusted to accommodate a smaller or larger group, but this too depends on the number of registrations. ~Thank you!

FITNESS CENTER CORNERNovember is American Diabetes Month. Did youknow 30 million Americans have diabetes, 86 million have prediabetes (putting them at risk ofdeveloping type 2) and that having diabetes nearly doubles your risk of having a heart attackand dying from heart disease. Now, for those ofyou who have diabetes, do you know what exercise can do to help you? During exercise, insulin sensitivity is increased, so your cells arebetter able to use any available insulin to take upglucose during and after activity. Additionally, when your muscles contract during activity, itstimulates another mechanism that is completelyseparate of insulin. This mechanism allows yourcells to take up glucose and use it for energywhether insulin is available or not. Therefore, ifyou have diabetes or prediabetes, exercise is agreat way to start improving your health. If youare considering starting an exercise program, runit by your doctor first. There are some precautionsthat people with diabetes should take when itcomes to exercise.
