The Netherlands Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen - NS) ordered 99 electric multiple units (EMUs) from the Consortium Sprinter LighTTrain. 50 four-car EMUs are to be manufactured by Bombardier Transportation and 49 six-car EMUs by Siemens Mobility.

These train sets will extend the commuter service in the western metropolitan area of the Netherlands and gradually replace NS’s existing rolling stock. The new trains are based on the proven Bombardier and Siemens design of the German Railways commuter train class 425, modified for the specific requirements of the Netherlands Railways and the Dutch railway system. The trains reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h.

They feature an attractive, open design and modern through-view, enhanced riding and climatic comfort as well as increased outward visibility due to wide windows. Smooth passenger flow is ensured by the large number of

doors, foldable steps and spacious entrance vestibules. The modern passenger information system includes acoustic announcement and TFT screens for visual information. The NS Sprinter trains meet stringent reliability requirements and are welcomed as a new generation of commuter trains.

Comfort, Safety and SecurityNew features, such as level access and continuous floor height over the complete vehicle length, will maximize safety and provide a comfortable ride for disabled passengers. Multifunction vestibules can easily accommodate wheelchairs, bikes and prams, meeting increased diversityin passenger needs.

All passengers and drivers can feel confident and secure, due to the implementation of the latest Dutch safety regulations (RKS).

Technical Characteristics• Modern, light and attractive design• Articulated train set with Jacobs Bogies • Floor height of 800 mm through the entire train set

without steps• Wide doors for easy access and rapid passenger change• Large multifunctional vestibules for wheelchairs, bikes

and prams• Low interior and exterior noise level (TSI conform)• High ride comfort• Multiple operation up to a total train formation length

of 270 m• Crash scenarios according to latest Dutch safety

regulations (RKS) to ensure maximum safety (TSI crash scenario 3)

• High reliability and availability in operation due to - redundant TCMS and low voltage systems - redundant control, traction and auxiliary supply systems

• Prepared for 3 kV DC, 15 kV 16.7 Hz and 25 kV 50Hz catenary systems

• Fulfillment of high European standard of fire safety requirements

• Fully air-conditioned passenger and drivers compartment• Train-ground station communication for diagnosis and

passenger information• Train radio based on GSM-R technology• Video monitoring of passenger compartments• Prepared for passenger infotainment• Passenger information system with TFT screens• Communication on train set via MVB and on train

formation via WTB• Based on proven technology of BR 42x series for

German Railways DB AG

In addition to the modern passenger information system, the new trains will be equipped with on-board camera surveillance and GPS-supported train identification. The modern technology significantly reduces the level of interior and exterior noise and provides passengers with a more enjoyable ride.
