NRT´s offer a good point of view on which students may be suitable for a gifted or a remedial program just looking at the percentile where the students are in the rank. Some parents also appreciate these type of test because this way they can measure the education received by the child and consider if the work of the teacher is being done properly. Lectura: Norm and Criterion Referenced Testing

Read the article about Norm and Criterion Referenced Testing by Linda A. Bond and

analyse the main characteristics of both types of assessments.

• What are their advantages and disadvantages?

• Talk about your experience as a student: was norm-referenced testing demotivating

or motivating?

• How do you think these types of assessment work for young children?

The article is in the virtual classroom and in the following link:

− What are the advantages and disadvantages of NRT´s and CRT´s ?

I will start speaking about Norm Referenced Testing. NRT´s can be very

useful to rank a big number of students with the same test , this helps the

task of creating and assessing tests for each city or state, reducing the

expenses for the institutions and the paper work related to it.

One of the main problems I see on NRT´s is that the norm is taken

every 7 years, so you depend on the same results for a long period of time,

besides, you need to be very careful and lucky with the norm selected, because if the results are very low or very high, when the norm is used with

the rest of the students, the NRT´s can produce unrealistic percentiles,

where we won´t be able to truly appreciate if our students learn the skills

needed.

NRT´s offer a good point of view on which students may be suitable

for a gifted or a remedial program just looking at the percentile where the

students are in the rank. Some parents also appreciate these type of test

because this way they can measure the education received by the child and

consider if the work of the teacher is being done properly.

Criterion Referenced Testing shows a more precise image of the

learning process of our students. CRT´s are based on the skills the students

need to learn to meet tha criteria given the local government. The results

produced by this type of tests are more related to the contents and skills

that the students need to learn and may be less demotivating for the

student because they try to improve their knowledge, not their position in a

ranking.

As a summary we can say that NRT´s are helpful to avoid paperworkand it takes the load off the teachers, because the test must follow a

pattern and the norm is already produced. On the other hand CRT´s reflect

better the skills the students know or can do and follow the rules stablished

by the government but leaves the work of producing the tests and assessing

them to the teachers, who are the ones who really know what their students

need to work on.

− My experience as a student

When I was a student I always preferred CRT´s to NRT´s because they

reflect better on the skills worked in class and they do not to be structured

in the same way, that variety in the type of test resulted motivating. On the

other hand I need to say that personally I enjoyed NRT´s every now and

then because I think it´s good for the student and the parents to know If the

educaton received is going in the right direction. In my personal experience

NRT´s was not enjoyable but resultd motivating for me.

− NRT´s and CRT´s for young children

In my opinion we need to be very careful when we choose tests for

children. In general, CRT´s are more suitable for them because the results

produced don´t isolate the students in a rank or group, it reflects only on

the skills worked, not on a previously designed norm. The children need to

be motivated to learn the skills, not to obtain a rank.

I would also like to say that for teachers and also for students , it´s

good to make some NRT´s throghout the year in order to know whichstudents need to strenghthen certain skills and which of them can try more

advanced activities and objectives but always focused on the skills that are

learned , not on the position they are in a rank.
