Hello Everybody: Well, we are in the final stretch before the annual NRPS conference here in Henderson. This conference is going to feature some great educational sessions. A few of our top-name speakers include Barbara Heller, Chris Nunes, Dale Larson, and Dr. Bob Rossman. In addition, there are several local speakers and a variety of local topics including Gangs, Workplace Bullying, Park Maintenance Pruning, Inclusion Programming, the Carson River Project Nature Park, and Shaping Public Perception. In short, there is an incredible amount of interesting, educational sessions to choose from. That’s not all. This year, the entire exhibit hall is sold out. Come and visit all of our vendors and have a chance to win a color, flat-screen TV. You will also be able to network with several other professionals during our socials and awards banquet. If you need to renew or attain your CPRP certification, there will be a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional Prep course at the end of the conference. I want to thank all those who helped with this conference. There was a lot of hard work that went into the planning, and I am sure it will show by the time the conference rolls around in a few weeks. Finally, this is my last newsletter as your President. I want to thank everyone who helped make this year a huge success. Our magazine is back, our website is updated, and we are financially sound. It took a lot of individuals working very hard to make this year a success. I would also like to welcome our new President, Jayne Mazurkiewicz, to her position and hope that we all support her and her efforts as she continues to move our Society and our profession forward. Thanks again for all your help, and I hope to see you at our 2012 conference. Thanks, Dirk Richwine, President

With only a few more days until our annual conference, I am getting excited to see some of my fellow parks and recreation professionals. I’ll be busy with all the details of the event, but feel free to stop me to say a hello or introduce yourself if we haven’t met. That is one of the great things about attending conference - I get to see old friends and meet new ones. All of us are so busy in our own worlds, that we don’t get many opportunities to see each other. I would like to thank all the people that were involved in planning this great event. My goal this year was to involve as many members as we could. I explained to my committee chairs that they should reach out to others and not try to do all the work themselves. This was their chance to teach someone else about putting on a conference. So if you are looking for that next opportunity to give back to your society, please see one of your board members. We are always looking out for that next committee member, chair, or executive board person. If you just became a new member of NRPS when you signed up for conference, welcome. Our membership committee will be sending information to you soon. I will be discussing my goals for the society at our board meeting in April. I’ll share the details in the next edition. Until then, check out all the great things for conference, including a breakfast for retirees and a free CPRP prep course. Take care, Jayne Mazurkiewicz, CPRP President Elect

Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham is a 20 year-old wheelchair moto-cross athlete from Las Vegas, Nevada. Aaron was born with Spina Bifida, a birth defect of the spinal cord, which resulted in him having no usage of his legs. Aaron never let anything stop him. Aaron started riding at skate parks at the age of 8 . The first time was scary, and he fell, but he was never one to give up just because it wasn’t easy. So he tried again. From then on he was hooked. He has won a few BMX free style competitions, including the 2005 Vegas AmJam BMX finals, but for Aaron that is secondary to the joy of riding and hanging out with friends at the skate parks. Over the last six years Aaron has challenged himself to try progressively more difficult tricks; carving, grinding, power-sliding, hand planting, and spinning are just a few of his accomplishments. In 2005, he perfected a mid air 180-degree turn. Then on July 13th, 2006, he landed the first wheelchair back flip. Four years later, at a camp in Woodward, he landed the first ever double back flip (August 26, 2010). Since then, he has gone on to perform it live while touring with the Nitro Circus. As if this is not enough, on February 9th, 2011, he landed his very first front flip in New Zealand. Aaron enjoys showing young kids with disabilities that a wheelchair can be a toy, not a restriction. He loves helping younger children learn how to handle their chairs in new and different ways and teaching them a trick or two. Aaron has a passion for what he does, not only is it a lot of fun, but he wants to change the world’s perception of people in wheelchairs, as well as helping everyone see his/her own challenges in a new way.

Washoe County is highlighted in the feature article for the April issue of the National Recreation and Park Association magazine.

Below is the link to the article. The

County portion starts in the last section titled: A 20-year Plan Covering 2,000

Square Miles. Also, a great photo from Bob Harmon

sets the stage for the article, which highlights conservation practices of six agencies across the nation!
