Natural ViagraThere’s a basic difference about men and women when experiencing symptoms down there: women are apt to regularly examine themselves for changes and better informed about disease conditions. They are able to seek professional help before conditions take a turn for the worse. Men on the other hand, ignore discomfort and are embarrassed or are in morbid fear of doctors so they consult health experts much later – oftentimes when symptoms have become irreversible. This week, NRI brings you the issues foremost in men’s minds: aging and erectile function. Some of your fears may be real but on a happy note, there are lots of things you can do, easily and effectively, that will enable you to address these issues naturally. Forward to the men folk in your circle and bring back the mojo!

Know Your BodyFact is potency problems are largely due to the normal aging process; something nature has programmed but whose rate of progression can be delayed. Statistics show that 50% of American males aged 40 years and above experience erectile problems – coinciding with the period when symptoms of atherosclerosis manifest. By age 70, “the spirit may be willing but the body is not” since 70% would have problems with potency.

The penis is composed of spongy and cavernous tissues that engorge with blood during sexual stimulation and subsequent erection.

Granted that the neurological pathway is intact, erection and ejaculation are dependent on a number of factors –sufficient blood flow, testosterone stimulation, general health, prostatic condition and emotional chemistry between partners. While the latter is too complex to mess with; proper nutri-tion, supplementation, exercise and a clear understanding of the aging pro-cess can bring back Super into the Man!

Aging Factor: LOW Nitric Oxide LevelsIn 1998, the breakthrough discovery of pharmacologist Louis J. Ignarro, Ph.D. on the health benefits of nitric oxide earned him and his partners the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Nitric oxide, a naturally-occurring gas produced by the endothelium or inner lining of blood vessels is a “signal” molecule critical for healthy circulation. Though it is so fleeting (with a half life of just a few seconds), it prevents heart attacks and strokes by dilating blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and preventing the accumulation of arte-rial plaque. In fact, boosting nitric oxide prevents platelets from sticking together and forming clots, reduces blood pressure by as much as 10-60 mmHg, cholesterol by 10-20% and arterial plaque by 50%. After nitric oxide is produced, it travels to other organs, including the brain and sexual tissues. Healthy amounts of nitric oxide promote longevity and wellness be-cause organs are well nourished and blood pressure is kept low.

Why is nitric oxide of particular concern to males? Erection is a function of good blood flow reaching the penis and when levels of nitric oxide are low, blood vessels are constricted, impeding the engorgement of penis with blood.

According to Drs. Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen in their book, You Stay-ing Young, “The way blood flows throughout your body (which is largely determined by the hardening of your arteries) determines your body’s ability to maintain and sustain an erection.” Not having nitric oxide also manifests as sluggishness, poor skin condition, poor mental function, drowsiness and even sleep apnea.

The problem with this super molecule is that production starts to decline in adult-hood. Since nitric oxide is produced by the endothelial cells, any damage to the arteries which causes inflammation or increases the risk for plaque formation and deposition, automatically reduces nitric oxide production. Poor dietary habits rich in bad lipids (cholesterol, transfats, low density lipoproteins), sed-entary lifestyle, smoking and drinking contribute significantly to this decline.

Unfortunately, nitric oxide is a gas cannot be given conveniently as an oral or injectible supplement. You can increase it temporarily by breathing more deeply through the nose and relaxing (through meditation); but the only effective way to boost levels is to consume its precursor L-arginine from food such as meat, cereals and fish or from supplements rich in L-arginine. L-arginine is an amino acid that enters the endothelium where it is used to produce nitric oxide, thus normalizing levels.

As men age, less nitric acid is produced, making it more difficult to get adequate amounts from food alone. So if sexual function is an issue even in your early 30’s, long before you reach the so-called andropause stage, the remedy may be as simple as including L-arginine-rich food in your daily diet or modest supplementation with L-arginine (4,000-6,000 mg. daily in 2 divided doses).

However, those who opt for L-arginine sup-plements should also take another amino acid, L-citrulline (400-600 mg daily) so that L-arginine is effectively utilized by the body. Melon and cucumber contain citrulline but in amounts that may not be effective in raising nitric oxide levels. The science on nitric acid and L-arginine is good; Mayo Clinic reports that L-arginine improved blood flow and endothelial func-tion in subjects given supplements.

How do you know if you have adequate blood flow to the penile region? Aside from the obvious indications when you aroused, involuntary nocturnal erections/emissions when you are asleep or relaxed are good signs that your blood flow is sufficient. Unfortu-nately, nitric oxide which accounts for most of the vascular causes of erectile dysfunction is clinically difficult to measure.

TestosteroneOccasional episodes of erectile dysfunction are normal even in healthy men. Stress is one of the greatest mood-dampeners together with obesity, intake of some pre-scription drugs and alcohol abuse. However, if you have been consistently getting disappointed, you may have low nitric oxide levels, testosterone levels or inflamed and clogged arteries, a condition that occurs centrally in the heart and also periph-erally including the penis.

It’s a fact that low testosterone is a common condition affecting 2-4 million men. This means that less than 4-7 mg. is produced per day and accounts for 20% of erectile dysfunction cases. Unlike nitric oxide, serum levels are easily measured and appropriate remedy instituted by your doctor.

Mojo Tips in Lieu of the Blue Pill

Take care of your heart – your penile function mirrors your cardiac health in a bid way! Steer clear of transfats, cholesterol and bad fatty acids. Go for avo-cado and olive oil rich in monounsaturated fatty acids. Get plenty of Omega 2, an anti-inflammatory agent and antioxidant. Excellent sources are marine fatty fish and krill.

Consume dark-skinned grapes or Concord grape juice rich with polyphenols (resveratrol). Resveratol is also present in wine but stay off alcohol when you are experiencing potency issues. Resveratrol is a potent antioxi-dant that protects the heart and stimulates the endothelial cells to produce Nitric oxide.

Exercise and lose the flab. Obesity is a contributing factor to erectile dysfunction. Start with 20 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise, three times a day. With consistent exercise, Nitric oxide production is enhanced even on “rest days”.

Relax, relax, and relax. Meditation causes you to breathe deeply, thus enhanc-ing nitric oxide production. When you are less stressed, blood vessels are more relaxed and do not require as much nitric oxide. Lavender is an essential oil that has been scientifically proven to relax the brain. Get enough sleep since testoster-one production peaks at night. Eat food rich in L-arginine and L-citrulline. Consider powdered whey concen-trates with L-arginine to supplement your diet if you prefer this to pills. To ensure complete nutrition, especially if you are too lazy to prepare meals from fresh, “whole” food, take the recommended amounts of Zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. There are “male enhancing supplements” in the market containing ingredients like tongkat ali, fenugreek, horny goat weed and other herbs that have been staples in native therapies. Lastly, check your medicine labels – some prescription drugs may be respon-sible for your state of woe.(1,309 words. Submitted by Mary Tolentino)

Power Living: Male Wellness & Beauty

Supplements Men are as vain about looking youthful as women; just less obvious about it. It was quite a gamble when Clinique launched its male line of cosmetics – the common thought was that men needed no more than the triumvirate of toothpaste, deodor-ant and soap to get by. In fact, scents in after shaves and colognes were strictly for prom night and other occasions when the usual pheromones needed a boost. Today, thanks to Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, man’s pursuit of beauty and wellness is out in the open. That sense of beauty can be unconventional – Hugh Laurie of “House” fame has signed on as the face of Sephora and Estee Lauder is making a killing off its male cosmetics line. Strength and endurance are the perennial subliminal messages embedded in most ads for male health lines.

The truth is, today’s metrosexual of any age and inclination are every bit as con-scious about health and beauty as their significant others. This week’s issue brings you excellent evidence-based top nutrients for anti-aging -- after all, men deserve radiant health too!

Top-Rated SupplementsThe National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine reports that in 2007, roughly 38% of the U.S. adult population use Complementary Medicine with half of that group using a non-mineral, non-vitamin natural dietary supplement for with fish oil as the top product used. Though the science behind natural dietary sup-plements is good, it is rather strange that it is not considered as part of conventional medicine, except for vitamins and minerals taken to meet RDA (recommended daily allowance).

To come up with a few of the top-rated supplements, NRI elicited the help of 10 health workers aged 30-60 on their favorite supplements. Who better to know than a person whose job is particularly stressful and fraught with work-related dangers including exposure to highly-resistant hospital microbes and radiation? Surprisingly, these include lesser known supplements you are less likely to pop, with benefits even extreme health buffs may not be aware of.

L-Arginine /Nitric Acid (see article on Natural Viagra) Glutathione

Glutathione is sometimes called the “master oxidant”. While it is produced by the body and is present in every cell of the body, stress and strenuous exercise call for greater amounts. Unlike other antioxidants that work outside the cell to protect cell membrane integrity, glutathione works from within and “potentiates” the activity of alpha lipoic acid, CoQ 10 and some vitamins particularly C and E. Glutatione works by protecting the cell against oxidative damage from unstable radicals. These free radicals easily attach to weak bonds on DNA and cause breakage or alteration. Glutathione counters damage caused by radiation, toxic chemicals, oxidation by-products and environmental pollutants.

The usual problem with oral glutathione is its bioavailability or absorption. Health experts say that consuming whey concentrate triggers the body’s production of glu-tathione. Raw fruits and vegetables are also excellent sources of glutathione.

Coenzyme Q 10 (CoQ 10)

Nitric oxide (see article on Natural Viagra) is considered the most important nutri-ent in the cardiovascular system followed by CoQ10. This is a concern because car-diovascular patients on statins are prone to CoQ10 deficiency. Research shows that 75% of patients suffering from heart ailments lack CoQ10.

CoQ 10 is a naturally occurring compound produced by all the cells in the body but with greatest concentration in the heart. Our bodies synthesize CoQ 10 from oily fish, grains and organ meats. It is involved in energy production which in turn fuels muscle contraction and protein synthesis. Thus, a deficiency in CoQ 10 limits how our bodies get energy to run growth and repair processes essential to maintain good health. Though maintaining good cardiac function is its primary role, CoQ 10 also improves athletic performance and is important in coping with fatigue as well as in controlling obesity, diabetes and enhancing brain function in Alzheimer’s.

Coenzyme Q 10 (CoQ 10)

Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) is one of the lesser known antioxidants. It is produced by the body and is involved in burning carbohydrates to energy. Excess alpha lipoic acid has potent antioxidant function: research shows that it helps in healing liver damage due to viral hepatitis or acetaminophen/drug toxicity and may be as important as milk thistle for regeneration of cells and protection from further injury. ALA also improves insulin sensitivity and is important in preventing diabe-tes and metabolic syndrome.
