New Approaches for Performance Definitionof Composite Materials and Structures

Thursday 11 March 2010

Venue: National Physical Laboratory (NPL), London, UK

Aims and scope:The purpose of the seminar is to capture thecurrent state of the art in the analysis of composite material behaviour and structuralperformance. The focus of the seminar is onnovel experimental approaches that providedeeper insight into the material behaviour, with emphasis on full-field approaches that allow a visualization of damage evolution. The seminar covers a range of scales fromfibre fractures to global structural response. The speakers are from both academia andindustry. In each presentation it is clearly demonstrated how the techniques canenhance understanding and address thechallenges of design in composite materials. The presentations cover aspects that includemodel validation and the effect of highvelocity loads such as those experienced

under impact and blast conditions.

Poster presentations are invited ontopics relevant to the theme of theseminar. Please produce an A1portrait poster for the event; poster boards will be provided. Pleaseindicate on the registration form if

you wish to present a poster.Spaces for posters are limited and allocationswill be made on receipt of registration fee.

Seminar chairmen:Professor Janice Barton - University of Southampton, UK Professor Fabrice Pierron - Arts et Métiers ParisTech, Châlons en Champagne, FranceDr Jerry Lord - NPL, UK

There will be an exhibition of equipment related to those used in the presentations. The exhibition will provide interactivedemonstrations of the techniques. Further tothis there will be ashort tour of therelevant facilties at NPL at the end of the day.

The seminar is aimed at engineers and scientistswith a background in composite materials andstructural design wishing toupdate their knowledge of theanalysis tool kit and understandthe advantages and limitationsof new techniques. Thepresentation topics are relevantto many industries includingaerospace, marine, automotive(particularly F1), materialsuppliers and energy generation.

The seminar will also be of great

use to those studying for higher degrees that cover aspects of composite materialperformance.
