There are many reasons why we are proud to be from the North. It is a region steeped in industrial heritage, history, invention and ground-breaking discoveries. It is also home to some of the most dynamic regions of the UK and is vitally important both to the UK economy and as a global trading partner. Our businesses produce many innovative, high quality, distinctive products and services across a range of industries. This is underpinned by a dynamic business ecosystem that includes some of the world’s highest-ranking universities, internationally significant centres of Research & Development and high-calibre business support organisations.
Add to that some of the UK’s largest Atlantic and European connected shipping ports and seven international airports, including Manchester, which flies to more overseas destinations than any other UK airport, and you can see why the region is providing commercial success for UK and foreign owned companies. The economy of the North of England alone is bigger than many European countries, and our exports of goods and services is around £90 billion a year.
Chemicals is a particularly strong sector in the Northern Powerhouse (NPH) with exports in 2019 amounting to £12.7bn. The region has a high concentration of producers, particularly in Yorkshire & the Humber, Cheshire and the North East with many specialist companies providing for a wide variety of applications including drinking water, food processing, personal care, cleaning, medicines and paints. The COVID-19 pandemic has, in fact, highlighted the value of some of those commodities e.g. for hand sanitisers, manufacture of medicines, testing kits, disinfectants, PPE, ventilators and vaccines.
The region is also at the forefront of innovation and new trends such as chemicals for batteries used in electric vehicles and green chemistry and its centres of excellence, including those in Universities, the many contract Research & Development facilities and those used by multinational companies underlines the prowess of the region’s offer.
So, we are proud and delighted to introduce this brochure and the highly innovative companies participating in this mission.

Carbon Air has developed a technology platform around the effects of highly microporous adsorptive materials (normally activated carbon) on air. These technologies feature in vehicle suspension, soundproofing materials and audio applications, causing small spaces to behave like large ones, and thin materials to behave like thicker ones. Carbon Air offers products via its supply chain or develops solutions collaboratively under license.
The company is looking for low temperature porous binders to fix activated carbon granules together without masking their pores, and for help in the development of highly microporous polyHIPE materials.
