CPA HIGHLIGHTSHere is a friendly reminder that CPA is now seeking input from members for the revised Code of Ethics. Your insight and suggesIons as PTA and/or student PTA are invaluable! If you have not already done so, please review the proposed new draL code of ethics, and complete the survey outlined below. The deadline for gathering member feedback is February 28, 2014.
A code of ethics establishes the ethical principles governing professional conduct. It reflects the social ethics of the Ime, as well as the value systems and moral principles we all hold as a collecIve.
The CPA Code of Ethics for physiotherapy:
• Defines acceptable behaviours• Promotes high standards of pracIce• Provides a benchmark for members to use for self-‐evaluaIon• Establishes a framework for professional behaviour and
responsibiliIes
CPA first published its Code of Ethics and Rules of Conduct in June 1989. While this has remained a robust document, we want to ensure its conInued relevance as the pracIce of physiotherapy evolves and changes over Ime.
In that spirit, we are looking for input from our members on the new draL Code.
We hope you will take the Ime to review the proposed changes to the Code and complete our member survey.

College of the North AtlanIc (CNA) offers an online RehabilitaIon Assistant program which encompasses both occupaIonal therapist assistant (OTA) and physiotherapist assistant (PTA) knowledge and skills. And while the college is physically located in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, the online format a9racts students from across the country.
CNA’s two-‐year RehabilitaIon Assistant (OTA/PTA) program provides a vital supporIng role in the delivery of efficient and effecIve rehabilitaIon services. Graduates work as members of a health care team under the supervision of, and in collaboraIon with, occupaIonal therapists and physiotherapists.
The program is designed to accommodate students with no previous experience, as well as those already working in the health care field. OTAs and PTAs with one area of specializaIon may obtain the training needed to work in both disciplines.
“You can start with absolutely no prior experience,” said Jane Gamberg, the college’s Dean of Health Sciences. “Our regular program offered every September is geared towards anybody.”
However, Gamberg notes new regulaIons in Ontario require both OTA and PTA designaIons.
“OTAs or PTAs can now, through online learning, achieve their second designaIon – they can do the part that they are missing,” she explained. “There has been an increase in the amount of interest from prospecIve students and current professionals looking to obtain this second designaIon.”
The two-‐year RehabilitaIon Assistant (OTA/PTA) program includes six semesters and allows students to enroll on a full-‐Ime or part-‐Ime basis. The online format enables learners to take part in educaIon without the restraints of geographic locaIon or a structured schedule.
Technology-‐enabled learning offers flexibility, collaboraIon, and interacIon without the isolaIon normally associated with tradiIonal distance educaIon. It also improves access for independent, disciplined learners. Web-‐based courses are enhanced by online laboratory sessions and structured clinical placements, which can be completed near the students’ home locaIon.

“All the courses in the RehabilitaIon Assistant (OTA/PTA) diploma program are delivered online through Distributed Learning with the excepIon of the required hands-‐on clinical placements,” said Theresa Pi9man, CNA’s Chair of Distributed Learning. “Students need access to a computer and the internet to parIcipate. Courses are offered through the college’s learning management system – Desire2Learn – and include a range of media and acIviIes including web and videoconferencing. Support is provided to students through dedicated faculty and a seven-‐day week, extended hour helpdesk.”
Graduates of CNA’s former OccupaIonal Therapist Assistant or Physiotherapist Assistant cerIficate programs may apply to enter semester four of the RehabilitaIon Assistant (OTA/PTA) program to receive dual cerIficaIon. Graduates with one cerIficaIon from another insItuIon may be eligible to enter the program with advanced standing. Students enrolled in the two-‐year program must complete four work placements before graduaIon. “That’s a criIcal part of the program,” said RehabilitaIon Assistant (OTA/PTA) instructor Lucy Miller. “We have formalized agreements with a lot of insItuIons across Canada to allow our students to do placements in a locaIon that’s convenient for them. Students have a set of competency skills that they have to complete. They’re assigned a preceptor in the work environment, so the preceptor would be an occupaIonal therapist or physiotherapist who works in that environment. The student would stay with them for the placement and that person would evaluate the student and provide a wri9en report.”
Those with previous educaIon or experience in the field are able to avail of the Prior Learning Assessment RecogniIon (PLAR) process. “Although there are no formal arIculaIon agreements with other insItuIons, credits can be transferred to other programs and credits from other programs will be recognized in our program,” said Gamberg. “As well, the PLAR process is extensively uIlized for students entering the program with previous post-‐secondary educaIon and work experience.” Currently CNA has students enrolled from across the country.
“It’s offered completely online so it is a9racIve to people across the country,” added Gamberg. “Students are eligible to work in any province. The program is parIcularly a9racIve to people already working in the field as an OTA or PTA who are required to obtain cerIficaIon in the other discipline. Also, to students who don't live near a program with tradiIonal face-‐to-‐face delivery, such as in rural Canada and to students who need to keep working full-‐Ime for economic reasons.”

Student, OTA and PTA Diploma Program, Class of 2014
Mohawk-‐McMaster InsItute for Applied Health Sciences
1. What inspired you to embark upon your PTA/OTA career?-‐I did a year of nursing then realized it was not for me. I did not have enough passion for it; one thing I learned though through the process is making sure it’s what you love to do. In the end, clients/paIents know which ones truly love their job and which ones don't love it enough. I did not know much about the OTA/PTA profession; but there was such passion for this field that I decided to embark on it. Going in this, I knew this would be it. 2 years later -‐ I am glad I was led this way. I am a huge sports person
2. Which school have you been aNending?-‐ I currently a9end Mohawk College -‐ the IAHS campus at McMaster University.
3. What addiKonal skills have you learned in your physiotherapy assistant placements?-‐ I have learned how to communicate and engage clients with developmental and neurological condiIons in their treatments and ways to enhance their engagement in the community.
4. Can you highlight your community involvement? -‐ I recently embarked on volunteer roles with the ALS society of Ontario (in the Hamilton region), and the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton & Halton.
5. How has your CPA-‐NPAA membership enhanced your profession?-‐ It keeps me up to date on the latest programs being offered, conferences, and the latest news, which is all beneficial for PTAs.
6. Which CPA Divisions did you join-‐ I joined sports physiotherapy, pediatrics, senior’s wellness, and women's health divisions!
7. What else can we do to benefit PTA students? - Having bursaries for PTA students would be a great addiIon and financial help for students who
would like to a9end conferences and contribute + learn.- I would like to see a job posIng for PTA jobs.
8. What do you like most about the PTA/OTA career?-‐ What I like most about this career is the opportunity to assist an individual in returning to their physical performance and occupaIonal performance (acIviIes of daily living). This always makes my day!
