  • ALCATEL-LUCENT7750 SERVICE ROUTER MOBILE GATEWAYRELEASE 6.0

The Alcatel-Lucent 7750 Service Router (SR) as a mobile gateway (MG) is a service-aware platform optimized to deliver the next generation of mobile broadband services with excep-tional performance and scalability. With inherent multi-function capabilities that complement its comprehensive 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) mobile gateway feature set, the Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR dramatically simplifies operations and provides a smooth path to grow and evolve the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) network.

OVERVIEWThe 7750 SR is the industry-leading IP/PLMS service edge router. It has been designed from inception to concurrently deliver multiple services to massive numbers of subscribers. With its FP network processing silicon, the 7750 SRs internal architecture is uniquely optimized for the rigorous demands of LTE by providing independent and concurrent packet processing in three dimensions: control (instructions), data (high-touch packet processing) and advanced data processing (L4-L7 packet inspection and analysis). This processing capability allows very high volumes of concurrent multimedia services (for example, VoLTE, video or gaming), each with its own unique processing demands, to be delivered without compromise. The 7750 SR runs the industry-leading SR OS and has end-to-end service-aware manage-ment delivered by the Alcatel-Lucent 5620 Service Aware Manager (SAM).

As a mobile gateway, the 7750 SR provides deployment flexibility and service agility with concurrent support for Serving GW (SGW), PDN GW (PGW) and Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) functions. MNOs can achieve network simplification and operational efficiency by consolidating many essential IP and mobile networking functions onto the same platform. Examples include advanced routing capabilities and support for Wireless LAN (WLAN) gateways, Broadband Network Gateways (BNGs) and IP Security (IPSec) gateways.

With the advanced, purpose-built platform that the 7750 SR provides, MNOs can easily deliver scaled growth with no service deterioration while also supporting an evolutionary path to Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and cloud-based architectures.

BENEFITSIncrease revenue with an IP-optimized approachThe adoption of IP is driving flatter more consolidated networks like LTE which changes the service requirements for the operator. The era of LTE is unlocking a new generation of high-touch, high-volume advanced services (including VoLTE, video, gaming, over-the-top (OTT) services, Internet services and business services), each with its own unique traffic requirements. Each service brings the potential for new revenue opportunities but also requires a different and more robust approach to packet processing.

The 7750 SR MG represents the new imperative in packet processing for mobile networks and is optimized for the delivery of LTE services, empowering the MNO to maximize revenue opportunities. With its award-winning FP network processing silicon, its three dimensional packet processing capabilities, its advanced QoS capabilities and other key features, the 7750 SR MG ensures that MNOs are able to maximize LTE service revenues now and well into the future.

Simplify the network and reduce costsTodays operational environment for the MNO is challenging as many different IP functions are required in the network in addition to mobile GW functionality. These functions can include: IP routing and aggregation, Multi-Protocol Label switch-ing (MPLS), Wi-Fi access, IP security, and BNG. The 7750 SR helps MNOs to simplify their operational model and reduce costs by consolidating multiple functions on the same platform. The 7750 SR delivers IP routing, IP aggregation, and MPLS capabili-ties concurrently with its mobile gateway capabilities while also offering support for IPSec, WLAN gateways and BNGs.

Flexibly and efficiently grow and evolve the networkWith the SR OS and Alcatel-Lucent FP silicon technology that scale 4G/LTE services across massive number of IP service packet flows, the 7750 SR enables MNOs to support the massive growth of subscribers, mobile devices and applica-tions while supporting new user behaviors and quality expectations. As networks continue to grow and evolve, MNOs will seek cost savings and operational benefits from cloud architectures and the virtual-ization of network functions through NFV. The 7750 SR mobile gateway evolution is compatible with Alcatel-Lucents migra-tion to a virtualized evolved packet core (vEPC) network.

FEATURESPurpose-built silicon and architectureAlcatel-Lucent has a proven track record as an innovator in network processor silicon technology. At the heart of the 7750 SR is the Alcatel-Lucent award-winning FP network processing silicon built specifically for the rigorous demands of high-touch, high-volume packet processing (including filtering, forwarding, QoS, accounting, charging and reporting) for each individual IP packet flow with uncompromising scalability and performance.

Dedicated CPU for control plane processingThe 7750 SR as a mobile gateway provides dedicated and independent processing of control plane packets sepa-rate from data plane (user) packets. The Alcatel-Lucent Control Plane Integrated Services Adapter (CP-ISA) performs the rigorous mobile gateway control plane processing requirements, including GPRS Tunneling Protocol-Control Plane (GTP-C), Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA], Policy and Charging Control (PCC) and Online Charging System (OCS]. This dedicated control plane pro-cessing dramatically increases scalability and performance, to meet emerging LTE service demands.

Dedicated CPU for advanced packet processing and service intelligenceTo further differentiate services, the Alcatel-Lucent Application Assurance Integrated Services Adapter (AA-ISA) provides independent and concurrent processing in the advanced data plane. The processing capabilities include L4-L7 in-line inspection and analysis, and advanced packet processing of specific application-level IP traffic flows. These capabilities, collectively known as Application Assurance (AA), leverage embedded subscriber, service and applica-tion intelligence to provide deeper levels of integrated service capabilities This capability extends the 3GPP Application Detection and Control (ADC) functionality while integrating it on a single enforce-ment point within the existing PCC framework.

The AA-ISA extends the GGSN/PGW metering and policy control capabilities to include application-based rules. Compared to dedicated network appliances, the AA-ISA provides tighter management integration, higher performance and scalability, and consumes less energy.

Concurrent multi-functional IP network capabilitiesThe 7750 SR is an industry leader in service routing, and as a mobile gateway it inherits many of these IP routing capabilities, including Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), MPLS and Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD).

In addition, with Routed Virtual Private LAN Service (R-VPLS) the 7750 SR can terminate VPLS provider edge (PE) func-tionality normally done in the backhaul network onto the mobile gateway. The 7750 SR also provides support for WLAN, and IPSec gateways plus BNGs, offering further opportunities for consolidation and operational savings.

Industry-leading availabilityThe 7750 SR as a mobile gateway offers complete intra-shelf and inter-shelf geo-redundancy, with full redundancy of control/switching elements and line cards. In addition, the SR OS supports numerous features that minimize service disruption. These features include non-stop routing, non stop services, stateful failover, and In Service Software Upgrade (ISSU). With its comprehensive suite of high availability features, the 7750 SR is the industrys most reliable platform for offering non-stop applications and services.

Advanced hierarchical QoSWith LTE and the services it can deliver, it is critical that each individual IP packet flow be given the proper QoS treatment through the mobile gateway. The 7750 SR sets the standard with its advanced and highly flexible Hierarchical QoS (H-QoS) implementation.

Hardware support for multi-tiered shaping and policing hierarchies provides granular QoS down to a per-subscriber, per-bearer and per-application (IP packet flow) basis. Because it is designed as a service delivery platform, the 7750 SR provides the tools to define and deliver the most stringent Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for high value, differentiated services.

Service-aware managementThe 7750 SR is managed by the Alcatel-Lucent 5620 SAM for assured, simplified and integrated operations across both network and service management domains. The Alcatel-Lucent 5620 SAM is designed to manage services and provides service-level visibility into the network for small- and large-scale service deployments. Moreover, the management offering streamlines network operations and aids in the provisioning and manage-ment of all connectivity and advanced networking services.

NETWORK OVERVIEW The 7750 SR MG can assume multiple roles simultaneously within the 3GPP mobile packet core including a GGSN, an SGW, a PGW and an integrated Application Detection and Control (ADC) function. These roles in the context of the 3G and LTE packet cores are shown in Figure 1.

As an SGW, the 7750 SR routes and forwards user data packets while also acting as the mobility anchor for the user plane during inter-eNodeB handovers as well as handovers between LTE and other 3GPP technologies. It supports the following interfaces: S1-U, S11, S4, S12 and S5/S8.

As a PGW (and GGSN for 3G), the 7750 SR provides connectivity for user equipment (UE) to external packet data networks and is the IP anchor point. The PDN GW performs policy enforcement, packet filtering, charg-ing support, lawful Interception and packet screening for each packet flow. It supports the following interfaces: S5/S8, Gn/Gp, S2a, S2b, Rf, Ga, Gy and SGi.

The 7750 SR embeds the ADC function within the mobile gateway with the AA-ISA to provide 3GPP-defined ADC capabilities for advanced packet processing and service intelligence. This allows the mobile gateway

to implement both the Policy Charging Enforcement Function (PCEF) and ADC under a common Gx PCC rule set for policy control and charging rules.

Depending on the network requirement, the 7750 SR can assume all of these roles simultaneously on the same platform.
