Regulation 14requires the use of fuel oil with

limited sulphur content

Regulation 4opens up for the use of Equivalent methods, at least as effective in terms of emissions reductions as

required by Regulation 14.

SOx Exhaust Gas Cleaning systems (Scrubbers) are an

Monitoring and compliance

8

Emission to AirSO2(ppm) and CO2(% v/v) are monitored since compliance of the scrubber systems is required to be demonstrated on basis of the ratio SO2/CO2 in the exhaust stream.

Emission to Sea

For the washwater pH, PAH, turbidity and

temperature are to be continuously measured

at the washwater overboard discharge.

In addition, washwater is to be analysed for

nitrates at commissioning and at each renewal

survey.

Emission values to be continuously monitored and recorded:

Treatment residuesResidues generated by the EGC unit should be delivered ashore to adequate reception facilities. Such residues should not be discharged to the sea or incinerated on board.

Regulation 13Sets limits to the emissions of NOx

from marine diesel engines

NOx Technical Code 2008 (MEPC.177(58))

10

Statutory Regulations & Directives

The NTC2008 specifies the requirements for the

following mandatory procedures to ensure

compliance with the NOX emission limits:

• Testing

• Survey

• Certification

When performing HIL test, the control system is isolated from the real system and instead put into a laboratory.

The response of the control system to malfunctions or extreme process conditions is evaluated using a software simulating the real scrubber system’s actuators, dynamics and sensors.
