Kathy Newell has selected some of our “original boyz from the hood” who
have been or are a part of serving our community. She has taken their picture
and then done a special pencil drawing of 24 different men. All the men have
lived or now live in Starke and Pulaski Counties except one. The pictures will
be on display from June 4 - 15, 2012. The first three persons who get the most
correct answers will win a prize. There will be a “hint list” attached to each
picture to help you guess the correct answer. Winners’ names will be posted
on the Starke County Public Library website June 18th, and
announcements will possibly be on both WKVI and the Chamber of
Commerce websites around the same time. Be sure to take a look at our
display and enter your best guess. Kathy Newell, the

BOOK REVIEW
by Sheila Erway
Reading this novel, “Home
Front,” by Kristen Hannah,
brought me to an awakening of
the commitment, struggle and
sorrow that our soldiers face.
You will read about the many
facets of military family life.
Those who embrace it, and those who don’t. There is a
high cost, the cost of leaving family for service to ones’
country, and the cost of those staying behind.
It is very well written. Have a good read! :)

THE ART OF CALLIGRAPHY CLASS PRESENTED BY DENNIS VIAR
6 weeks every Thursday 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. - starting May 24th
Dennis Viar will be taking his new and experienced students further into the art of beautiful
writing. He will be teaching the basic characters of Black Lettering, as well as exploring
other types of Calligraphy. You will be using your creative imagination by combining two or
more of your artistic talents. The class will be learning why and how to add illumination to
their art projects. You will need to bring your own supplies because each student will be
choosing the medium they wish to work with in the class. You may choose to use India ink
with calligraphy ink pens, chisel point markers, watercolors, or acrylic paints. There is a
plethora of crafts that can be combined with calligraphy.
Be sure to bring the basic supplies that you will be working with to class: paints and
watercolors, drawing paper, a soft lead or #2 pencil will be used for sketching and layout
design. Mistakes happen, so bring a Pink Pearl Eraser, also a ruler, and small set of
watercolor brushes. The chisel point type brushes we will be using are 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2";
they will be used for lettering. Acrylic paints and paintbrushes can be used in the class and
they lend themselves well with watercoloring papers, wooden boards, glass, plaster plaques,
and wallpaper. Watercolor pencils or colored pencils can be used to do small lettering, fine
outlining, and accenting. Your project can be entirely done with colored pencils. Ball point
pocket ink pens now come in a multitude of permanent colors and they can be purchased at
many businesses here in town.
It is recommended you bring an apron to protect your clothing from the permanent inks,
watercolor and acrylic paints, and anything else that would damage your clothing.
Please note that there will be no class on June 21st.

Our June book selection is The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax by Dorothy Gilman. Emily Pollifax has returned to her quiet, retired life in Brunswick, New Jersey. Her brief sojourn as a CIA courier was an exciting adventure to remember as she works at the hospital, speaks at the garden club, and attends church. She reads the newspaper one Sunday morning about a strange occurrence in Istanbul, Turkey. A woman is being sought after being kidnapped from the British Consulate.
Shortly after reading the story, her telephone rings. It is Mr. Carstairs at the CIA; she is needed for another courier job. To her astonished delight, she is swept off to Turkey within an hour. Her duty is to meet the same woman at a prearranged spot and hand over a passport and money to come to the United States.
Since this is only her second job for the CIA, Carstairs has yet to realize that when Emily Pollifax gets involved, jobs rarely go as simply as planned. It may not be her fault, but she soon finds herself having her passport taken by the Turkish police and detained until the mysterious woman is found. Then she has a body dumped in her lap. Soon she has to avoid the Turkish police, international spies, assassins, and anyone who is threatening the escape of the woman Mrs. Pollifax is supposed to rescue.
This is a fun, lighthearted, “cozy” mystery. Mrs. Pollifax has to use her common sense and a lot of luck to keep
hidden, complete the mission, and perhaps even stay alive. This is the second in the “Mrs. Pollifax” series.
Copies are available for check-out at the Circulation desk of the Henry F. Schricker Library in Knox,
after May 21st.
