Phonics
Introduce—ow
Revisit—all flashcards using jolly phonic actions. Can be downloaded online OR this website enables you
to use them interactively https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/flash-cards-time-trial?phase=3
Teach— ow with the correct action. For this action I also use the rhyme “how now brown cow.”
Practise— Play buried treasure with the words;
now down owl cow how town fown owp hown lown
You could dress up as a pirate or use the online PhonicsPlay version.
Apply— Hold up a caption. Read together model blending tricky words. This owl is not feeling sad and
down. I park my car in town. How do I feed a cow?
Communication and Language/Literacy
Recap with the children that their brand new “big, big topic” is— ‘Commotion in the Ocean.’
Recap with the children what does commotion mean (busyness, noisy etc) and also what an ocean is.
Quickly recap what we have already learned in our topic regarding sea creatures and pirates. Can your
child remember any key facts?
Inform your child that this week we are going to be learning about a special story called The Rainbow
Fish. If your child has already read that story—see if they can remember anything that happened in the
story.
Read the story PowerPoint with your child—encourage them to join in.
You can also watch the story on this link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFORvXhub28
Discuss with your child how The Rainbow Fish wasn’t a good friend to begin with because she wouldn’t
share—but then discuss the moral of story.
Tell your child that they are going to complete a writing activity today. We will be decorating our very
own rainbow fish and then we will be writing a letter to Miss S to tell her how we could be a good friend.
Key things to remember when letter writing--- Dear/ to/ from, finger spaces, punctuation etc.
Example (all spelt phonetically)
Dear Miss S
I wud be a good frend by beeing kInd.
From …
Complete the attached writing template with your child or write straight into books.
Understanding the World—The World (inside and outside)
For our learning this week I would like there to be a blend of fiction (The Rainbow Fish) and non-fiction
texts using the computers to aid us.
Research into rainbow fishes online and by reading the information sheet, attached below.
Following your research encourage your child to create a discovery fishing rod. Use a stick and knot string
around it. Your child can then go outside to do some fishing and see what they can catch. You may want
to physically have sea creatures to catch, or pictures of different types of fishes (I’ve attached some
below for you.)
Make a large-scale rainbow fish using natural materials.
Super Sentence Writing
Practise writing these sentences daily. Have them displayed and encourage your child to write them
down.
I was fishing in the sea.
I was fishing in the blue sea.
I was fishing and I caught a fish.
Reading
Daily practise of 1-1 reading and reading of high frequency words. Repetition of this is key to the children
making good progress.
Maths
Fluency starter activity— practising quick counting from 1- 20. Whisper odd bod numbers and shout the
even stevens. Then play “beach tennis.” Hopefully you’ll have some rackets at home, but you could also
just use a ball. Throw/ hit the ball backwards and forwards taking it in turns to count. Then start at a
random number and continue the counting challenge. Continue to challenge by upping the number to
start counting from.
Inform the children that today, during their maths session, we are going to be consolidating our money
learning that we were doing last week.
Remind them of the Stem sentence for adding;
“combining amounts to find the total.”
Reiterate—so we are going to combine/add together our money to find the total cost.
Recap the different coin values, putting them in order from the smallest value to the biggest.
Play seaside shopping with your child. Encourage your child to set up their own themed seaside shop, by
drawing pictures and adding prices. You may want to include fish and chips, stick of rock, shells, spade,
bucket etc (I’ve attached some pictures underneath for you).
Take on the role of the shopkeeper and encourage your child to visit the seaside shop paying for the
different goods. Remember to make it difficult based on your child’s ability. You may say 3p for a stick of
rock to encourage your child to add together 3x1ps BUT you may also say 10p and encourage your child
to only use 5ps to pay at the shop.
