Notes from the CAL President Lori Perry
It’s hard to believe that this is the last newsletter of 2019. As we approach the holidays, it’s an excellent time to reflect on our personal and collective successes for the year. The Canton Artists League was proud to exhibit in the Visions show at the Canton Museum of Art. The group also displayed works of art at Framer’s Gallery, Studio of Hope and Stark State University. Both Frank Dale and Nancy Stewart Matin had solo shows at the Little Art Gallery. Irene Rodriguez and Tom Kilpatrick did the same at First Row Centre Gallery. Todd Berget and Mark Mahoney won Best of Show and People’s Choice Awards, respectively, at the Canton Art Call, and Sharon Mazgaj won best of show at the Visions exhibit. A painting by Nancy Stewart Matin was chosen for exhibit in the Ohio Watercolor Society’s annual juried exhibition. Frank Dale was the in the spotlight at our Speakers Series in September, with a captivating presentation featuring his students, along with paintings and techniques focusing on the techniques of Johannes Vermeer. Congratulations to all, with apologies to anyone I missed in my haste to meet a deadline.
The Canton Artists League also presented two awards this year during the Speakers Series. The first went to Frank Dale -Master Artist and Teacher Award. The second was awarded to long-time supporter M.J. Albacete - Author, Teacher, Patron of the Arts. Both individuals have contributed to the success of the arts in Stark County, and also to the Canton Artists League. We thank both of them for their outstanding efforts and the legacies they have created.
I hope these members, along with all our wonderful artists who participated in our events this year, will inspire you to create and share art during 2020. If you’re looking for an early New Year’s resolution,

Current and Upcoming Show Plans
CAL board is working on possibilities for exhibits in 2020. We have list of ideas and will keep you informed of plans
try to find time in your studio to make exciting new artistic creations, learn a new technique, take a class visit a museum, subscribe to an artist publication, or share thoughts with other artists. And best of all, mark our 2020 meetings on your calendar and join fellow members as we enjoy interesting speakers and presentations, appreciate our “wall artists” and share camaraderie in a way that only artists can.
Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Hanukah and Merry Christmas to all! May 2020 be a year filled with art!
Lori Perry, President
Post note: Our Speakers Series will end its run with an outstanding event at the former First Row Centre Gallery in Greentown (now known as Gallery 8) on Wednesday, November 13. Doors open at 6:00 and the program begins at 6:30. Dr. Jennifer D’Agostino will bring accompanist Lisa Madaffer and a group of talented vocal music majors from Walsh University. The concert, A Kaleidoscope of Music, will feature classical, operatic and show tunes. If you appreciate music, this is not to be missed. I’m very proud of the variety of outstanding free programs we were able to offer the community, thanks to the generosity of an ArtsinStark special projects grant. Special thanks go to Irene and Rick Rodriguez, M. J. Albacete, Cheryl Eul, Julie Schuster and the many members who took time out of busy lives to support our events. A heartfelt thanks is also extended to members who were generous sponsors of these events: Mark Mahoney Frank Mazgaj, Lori Perry, Irene Rodriguez, Julie Schuster and Jane Vignos.

December/-January - Ann Schmidt Cranor
Ann was born and raised in Kansas. Since her parents were both accomplished artists, she grew up surrounded by art.
She attended Kansas State University earning a BFA degree with an emphasis in printmaking. Her work can be found in many private collections in Kansas, Colorado and Ohio. For many years she drew a series of Kansas sketches in partnership with her parents for the Hutchinson News Newspaper.
Ann finds inspiration for her work from the landscapes of Kansas, Ohio, and Colorado where she paints in the summer. Ann has lived in Ohio for the past seven years pursuing her painting interests.
Ann recently attended the Taos Watercolor Society workshop at the Fechin studio. She is currently exploring the fluidity and looseness of watercolor and ways to invoke images inspired by nature through this medium.

Exhibits at CMA
Gems of Modernist Brevity: Alice Schille Watercolor Miniatures
November 27, 2019- March 8, 2020
This exhibition celebrates the 150th anniversary of Alice Schille’s (1869-1955) birth through her miniature watercolors that were produced in a variety of locations — from France and England to North Africa, Guatemala and Santa Fe, New Mexico. These tiny paintings range in style from Impressionism to Post Impressionism to Cubism. A portion of Schille’s journals, studies, and artifacts will also be on display.
Creative Roots: Celebrating Ohio from the CMA Collection
November 27, 2019 - March 8, 2020
Ohio - our home, our source of pride. The creativity and artistic talent in our state is enviable. In Creative Roots, we showcase this talent by displaying the finest Ohio artists from our Permanent Collection. Artists such as Clyde Singer, Alice Schille, and August Biehle Jr., among others, rooted themselves in Ohio and set a precedent for the artists that followed. Judy Brandon, Kristen Cliffel, Darius Steward - all Ohio artists working today who continue to build on the foundation that others started. Many of the artists have their own unique stories, such as Claude Hirst, a female artist who changed her name from Claudine to Claude in order to conceal her femininity and be taken seriously in a male-dominated art world.
Crowns: Crossing into Motherhood
November 27, 2019 - March 8, 2020
Motherhood in our society is at a crossroads. This intersection of home, career and societal expectation is not a new one, but is now being examined through the unforgiving lens of social media and the rapid pace of contemporary society. Crowns refocuses this frantic search for the “perfect mother” by exploring varying maternal experiences in beautifully crafted, sculptural works of art. Each piece encapsulates carefully selected imagery, emotion, and individuality while speaking to the simultaneous joy and pain of motherhood in modern society.
Journey through Mushikui: Works on Paper by Yuko Kimura
November 27, 2019- March 8, 2020
Yuko Kimura takes a focus on working intuitively in the present, learning from the piece through the simple act of making. Her recent work incorporates multiple experimental processes, including etching, aquatint and monotype on pleated or twisted paper using indigo colored etching ink in layers. Most of the work utilizes old worm-eaten book pages from Japan and handmade papers that are made from kozo, gampi and abaca fibers. Yuko also embeds paper threads in handmade abaca paper. Transparency, form, and texture all take priority as she constructs her two and three dimensional patchwork experiments. The notion of history and recycling are central in her body of work.

Quotes on Art
An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one. ~Charles Horton Cooley Every creator painfully experiences the chasm between his inner vision and its ultimate expression. ~Isaac Bashevis Singer To make us feel small in the right way is a function of art; men can only make us feel small in the wrong way. ~E.M. Forster, Two Cheers for Democracy, 1951 Art is the stored honey of the human soul, gathered on wings of misery and travail. ~Theodore Dreiser, Life, Art, and America, 1917 The artist's world is limitless. Resource Directory
CAL is starting a resource directory for CAL members who sell their artwork. We already have a page on our website with links to
our artists websites. We will expand this information and add a link from Facebook. We anticipate distributing this information in
other ways also.
If you sell your artwork and are interested in having your information added to the directory, please fill out the form below and
send it to Irene at [email protected]. A picture or two of your artwork would also be nice.
