Monthly Skype Sessions Join us for a one-hour Skype session each month. We will have information and idea sharing on opportunities in 4-H. We encourage 2-way communication so think about questions you want to ask and ideas you want to share. A few days before the session, watch for an email announcement giving the link and topic for the next session. Participation is open to all agents but required for all first-year agents. Recordings of past sessions are available in the Resource Guide under Program Management, “New Agent Resources.” Ideas for future topics are welcome.

their customers. Please identify one unique varietal to your state and discuss the flower’s uniqueness and how beekeepers can effectively market that varietal. programs! The toolkit will focus on the topics of nutrition, food preparation, food science, gardening, health and physical activity. The toolkit is not a curriculum, but instead, instructional resources that will provide additional hands-on activities to enhance programs, camps, and other learning events. There will be activities geared toward children (ages 4 to 8) and youth (ages 9 to 15). Some of the children’s activities will have a superhero theme and the youth activities will have a comic book theme. There will also be recipes for appropriate for holiday activities, as well as general activities that can be used in a variety of situations. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Jennifer Tackett.

~Brooke Jenkins, Nutrition Education Program Curriculum Coordinator Physical Activity’s Fitness Waiver We now have a fitness waiver that you should be using if you are offering physical activity programs in your county. This includes Yoga for Kids TM, 4-H Dancefit, Jump into Foods and Fitness and any other program that is specifically designed to be a physical activity program. This waiver is not necessary if you are simply adding physical activity breaks to an existing program. This has been adapted from the waiver FCS is currently requiring. Below are some points of clarification regarding the use of the waiver.

1) The 4-H agent or their representative (another agent conducting the program, an assistant, or a volunteer) should make every effort to collect this waiver from program participants. 2) This waiver only applies to 4-H programs (either specifically named programs offered as complete curricula or general programs) that are primarily implemented with

the goal of offering physical activity. These programs could exist as stand along programs (i.e. doing one club lesson on Dance Fit) or as a series of programs (a health and nutrition club meeting that exercises monthly for the school year). 3) This waiver would not apply to physically active club/group activities where the primary purpose of the meeting is not physical activity. An example of this would be a "stretch break" during a club meeting, a relay race game to learn animal parts, etc. ~Jennifer Tackett, Extension Specialist for 4-H Youth Development KY SAVES Youth Piggy Bank Design Contest Please find attached the entry form for the 2019 Piggy Bank Design Contest. Kentucky Saves will be promoted during the month of the February. The entry form contains blanks to enter county specific deadlines and information. Please complete the form prior to distributing. Last year there was tremendous participation in the Youth Piggy Bank Design Contest as part of Kentucky Saves. As in past years, we plan to display the piggy banks at the Capitol for the months of February and March! Two winners from each district can be selected for display at the Capitol. Each district should conduct their own contest and set their own timeline to determine district winners.

Page 4: November/December 2018 4-H Update

All district winners must be submitted to Alex Elswick, NO LATER THAN JANUARY 16, 2019. This is a youth only contest. District winners will receive a certificate and letter from the Governor acknowledging their accomplishment. District winners will also be invited to a recognition ceremony at the Capitol building. Last year we had an excellent turnout of youth participating in the Capitol event. The recognition ceremony will be at the Capitol building on February 27th at 10:00. Please feel free to reach out to Alex Elswick, [email protected], directly with questions regarding the contest. ~Kim Adams-Leger, Extension Specialist for 4-H Youth Development

4-H Civic Engagement Connecting, learning, engaging, leading and impacting Over the past 18 months, the 4-H Program Leadership Working Group (PLWG) has been working with State 4-H Citizenship Specialists to look at the current work being done at the state and national levels. What has come out of that work is a revised framework that encompasses all the work being done in 4-H Youth Development nationally. We will be working with our KY 4-H Citizenship (now transitioned to Civic Engagement) Work Group to begin this transition between now and Program

Year 2020. Below is a lengthy, but important, article giving an overview of the revised framework. Please feel free to contact Chuck Stamper with any questions as we make this transition. You are welcome to begin using the new framework wording, or keep the current wording, during this 4-H program year. Definition: 4-H Civic Engagement involves working to make a positive difference in one’s community and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference (Elrich, 2000). 4-H youth engage within communities on many scales--from local to global--making contributions that reinforce their sense of purpose and strengthening their sense of belonging with peers and community adults. Vision: Youth will make a positive difference by engaging in learning opportunities that give them a heightened sense of responsibility and capacity to connect as active members of their communities, nation and world. Key Focus Areas

• Community engagement o Youth voice o Informed decision making o Civic responsibility

Civic education o Government principles, processes and structures o History and cultural heritage

Leadership/Citizenship

Page 5: November/December 2018 4-H Update

o Global engagement o Social justice • Service o Community service o Service learning o Community youth development

o Global context o Personal roles and responsibilities • Personal development o Leadership o Character o Mutual respect and understanding o Critical thinking and problem solving o Intercultural competence and communication o Civility

Effective 4-H Youth Civic Engagement programs will allow young people to: • CONNECT –Be active partners in a larger community as they recognize, appreciate and respect human diversity and commonality; understand their part in shaping change and work together towards the common good. • LEARN- Learn from others, self and environment to develop informed perspectives, empathy, ethics, social values, positive self-identity and sense of social responsibility. • ENGAGE-- Engage in civic education, awareness, and responsibility; social justice; public problem solving; community service, etc. • LEAD-- Develop leadership skills where youth use their voices, work, ideas or behavior for the greater good. • IMPACT—Make a difference in community, country and world Effective 4-H Youth Civic Engagement programs will include the following strategies for learning & positive youth development:

Learning • Based on appropriate national and state learning standards • Meet youth where they are • Mentorship • Experiential learning providing opportunities for practice, application and reflection including critical thinking and problem solving. • Motivation--achievement, affiliation and power/influence (McClelland’s Motivational Model) • Learning styles • Using appropriate technology

Positive Youth Development • Youth/Adult Partnership approach—youth and adults work together in a positive and respectful environment, contributing their unique strengths to the project and their relationship. • Youth are engaged in the identification, planning, implementation, leadership and evaluation of the program. • Youth in Governance • Includes the Essential Elements of Positive Youth Development—mastery, independence, belonging and generosity • Parent/guardian component running in parallel • Provide a continuum of developmentally appropriate experiences and opportunities

Kentucky Team Attends First National Impact Collaborative Summit Impact. Concept Maps. Pitch. Innovation. These words were heard multiple times during the week of October 14 as 32 teams representing 25 states met in Indianapolis for the first National Impact Collaborative Summit. The Summit purpose was to be a strong resource for institutions, project teams and their community partners, and Extension professionals nationwide to help solve problems, measure behavior change, and accelerate innovative ideas towards implementation for local impact. The Impact Collaborative also aims to be a key partner for the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) as it addresses critical issues nationally. Kentucky was pleased to send a team of two Agents, Joe Maynard, Martin County 4-H Youth Development, and Melissa Goodman, Hickman County FCS. Joe and Melissa focused their work on systemic communication change in Kentucky and did an awesome job. Also attending the Summit were Chuck Stamper,

Extension Special Projects Coordinator/4-H, and Craig Wood, Asst. Director for ANR. Drs. Stamper and Wood served as Facilitators and Key Informants during the Summit. Nationwide, there are around sixty of these Google 4-H CS Teen Leader teams helping to promote and present this

year’s 4-H NYSD “Code Your World” Experiment with a goal of increasing awareness of how CS is used all around us every day as well as how it is not as “scary” as you may think. In addition, the Kentucky 4-H SET Leadership Board will be attending the National Youth Maker Summit at the National 4-H Conference Center in November. While attending, the Board will be facilitating a Rube Goldberg Design Challenge and presenting two workshops on “Forming a STEM Leadership Team” and the “One for the Gripper 4-H Robotic Arm Challenge” to over 100 youth and adults from around the nation. A few items of note: At the request of the state camp advisory team, the PDFs are fillable this year! A Spanish version of the camper/teen registration form is available for use if this is a need in your county. As a reminder, there is NOT a section on getting permission to participate in activities. The camper activity release section is no longer part of camp registration. ~Darrell Stillwell, Extension Principle Specialist for 4-H Youth Development 4-H Camp 2.0 Pilot at West Kentucky 4-H Camp 2019 The state office has endorsed and supports the plan presented by Shane and the camp support panel of agents in West Kentucky to improve the quality of program and staffing for an experimental pilot year. The plan, called 4-H Camp 2.0, will reduce the workload on agents & volunteers by adding cabin staff and staff led classes to the summer program. Through the addition of beds, counties will be able to keep their usual number of beds allotted. This innovative new program will give higher quality care and program to campers while reducing the load on agents and volunteers. Agents are encouraged to work with the Camp Director to implement this trial program for the upcoming season. ~Darrell Stillwell, Extension Principle Specialist for 4-H Youth Development
