A Gratitude Examen
Gratitude is one of the greatest spiritual practices.
It opens our minds, calms our hearts, and rids
bitterness of it’s power. The “examen” is a spiritual
practice to reflect on how we have responded
to God’s work in our lives. This Thanksgiving,
consider your own reasons for thankfulness!
What Gifts have You given me?
How have I Received love from others?
How is grace at work in Aspects of my life story?
Do I Trust You to continue to bless me?
Where have I missed Your movements?
Have I used my Talents at the service of other?
Do I see a purpose for my life Underway?
How can I have the Discipline to thank You daily?
Help me give Everything back to You!

St. Mother Teresa once said, “The fruit of silence is prayer. The fruit of prayer is faith. The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service. The fruit of service is peace.” What a blessing it is to have a place to come and encounter this peace in the midst of our busy and hectic schedules.

Christ the King
“Jesus, remember me when you
come into your kingdom.”
Luke 23:35-43
Today as we end our liturgical year with the celebration of
the Feast of Christ the King, we read about two kings. The first
reading talks about King David as the embodiment of his people
and the people with him. To this day the Jews look at David as the
idealized king. Go to Jerusalem and the second holiest site for
Jews to visit, next to the Wailing Wall, is the tomb of David. Yet,
we know from Scriptures that David was less than perfect. He
was an adulterer, a murderer, a liar, a blasphemer; in fact we
could probably make a case that David broke all 10
Commandments. But he was a man devoted to God; he is
credited with many of the psalms; when he sinned he sought
forgiveness from God. David embodied not just his people, but
he embodies all of us who are sinners but remorseful as well.
The gospel passage today seems strange for such a
glorious feast as Christ the King. Jesus hanging on the Cross is
not our image of a king. Pilate had the inscription Jesus of
Nazareth, King of the Jews placed above the head of Jesus as a
way to mock Jesus and His followers who thought they could
usurp the mighty power of Rome. Today’s gospel focuses on the
dialogue between Jesus and one of the criminals crucified with
him. Matthew’s gospel tells us that both criminals rebuked Jesus,
but Luke shows that one seeks to be with Jesus in heaven.
Popular tradition names this criminal Dismas, but in reality all we
know is that Jesus was crucified between two criminals.
We call ourselves disciples of Christ, yet so often our we live
lives less than perfect. If we are sincere in our desire to follow
Christ, we find forgiveness for our shortcomings. Luke’s version
points out that no matter how far from God we may seem, we
can always find salvation. God is the God of infinite second
chances. But in giving us infinite second chances how do we
respond in ways that show we have changed?

Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church
How Would You Rule Your Kingdom?
It would be kind of awesome to be a king or queen! Absolute
rule, untold wealth, and people answering your every beck and
call are things that wouldn’t be half bad. Of course, I would be a
benevolent monarch, and I would hope that all my subjects
would love me. They could cheer me as I came out of the
palace, and I think my popularity ratings in the polls would be
through the roof. But if they weren’t, that would be fine, too,
because I would rule the kingdom. And that means no throwing
me out of office. Talk about job security!
As great as that sounds, the King of kings could have had all
that as well, but instead, he chose quite a different path. He
gave up absolute rule so all his subjects could have the free will
to choose to follow him. He gave up untold wealth so he could
be treated like a common criminal and receive a death
sentence. He gave up having servants at his disposal so he
could be the servant of all his subjects himself. Yes, he was the
King of kings, but he was nothing like a typical king. As much as
I think it would be great to be a king myself, I would rather
emulate this King instead.
Who would you rather be like? You could have it all or choose
to give away everything. You could choose a path of luxury or a
path of trial. You could be respected by
many or find yourself in a culture that
increasingly finds you objectionable.
Who would you rather be like? Do you
arrive at an answer quickly, or do you
need some time to think about it? The
King of kings awaits your reply.
