Regarding the Center
BUS FARE
Transportation to and from Mid-County is
available to those who live in our area for
$2.00 a day. $2.25 will be charged if one
doesn’t show. Additional riders at the same
location will pay 1/2 price. This service bills
monthly and we ask for prompt payment. We
have a fund for those unable to pay. Please
see Sally Williams if in need of assistance.
CONCERNS
Please see Sally Williams, not the National
Guard, about all maintenance concerns
(e.g., repairs or cleanliness).
HANDICAPPED PARKING
To use a handicapped spot, one must get
permission from Sally Williams. State
authorized tags are not acceptable due to
their wide scope of classifiable ailments.
Mid-County works with limited handicapped
spaces and needs them to go to those with
the most severe impairments.
ILLNESS
If you know a member who’s ill, please tell a
staff member so his or her name can be
added to the Sunshine List.
INCLEMENT WEATHER
All closings will be put on our Facebook page
or broadcast on WDEL (1150AM) and
WDEL.com. The list is posted at 5:20 am.
Please do not call the center.
NO SMOKING
An executive order by the Governor eliminated
smoking in all state buildings. Please comply.
PARKING
Mid-County’s parking area is through the
secured gate and in the rear of the building.
PERSONAL BELONGINGS
Personal belongings are the sole responsibility
of the individual to whom they belong.
Mid-County accepts no responsibility for items
lost or damaged.
QUIET PLEASE
Be respectful of guest speakers and
announcements by staying quiet through the
entirety of an event. Please also refrain from
talking with your neighbor, as you and those
around you miss information.
TRIP TRANSPORTATION
Transportation is boarded in the order of sign-
up. Noncompliance with this rule will result in
the offenders’ disembarkment so the proper
seating order can be met. All trip participants
must also make separate transportation
arrangements for trips that do not conform
to Mid-County’s standard schedule. In
addition, the limited amount of space on our
buses eliminates any possibility of a water
cooler. Because of this, we suggest bringing a
personal source of water on trips.
SUGGESTION BOX
Our suggestion box, currently placed at the
resource table, can be used to submit ideas
or suggestions.
SEATING
Please do not put pocketbooks or bags on
chairs. No one owns a seat at Mid-County;
our policy is first come, first served. Please
also place canes and walkers appropriately
so as not to create a tripping hazard.
SIGN-IN
Please sign in at the main table in the main
room immediately after entering Mid-County,
even if you aren’t eating lunch or staying any
length of time. Our funding is dependent on
the number of participants in various
activities, and we use sign-in records to
verify those numbers.
Note: Those who have signed up for an
activity don’t need to sign in again.
SILVER & FIT PROGRAM
We’re now enrolled in the Silver & Fit pro-
gram; ask your insurance company about
eligibility. See page 9 for more information.
WALKING PARTNER
Your safety and comfort are of our highest
priority; please ensure this by walking, at
minimum, in pairs and wearing soft-soled
shoes. The National Guard utilizes the gym
daily after 2:30 pm. For your safety, please
don’t walk after this time.

Top 3 Monday Pinochle Scores
Fridays at Mid-County are home to many fun games:
Horse Racing - Place bets at 25¢ a “horse” and hope Lady Luck is on your side (the superstition, not the horse - that
would be favoritism).
Trivia Games - Pick a side and pick your brain; choose wisely though, the victorious team wins prizes!
Table Shuffleboard - Haven’t you always wondered who among your friends could slide a puck across a waxed
table the best– and really, who hasn’t? Definitively lay the argument to rest; table shuffleboard is here
to quell the boasters and braggarts.
Draw that Song - this one’s simple and a fan favorite: one player chooses their song using a list or
from memory and tries to draw the song out while other players attempt to guess what the tune is.

A Few Activities at Mid-County
Free Art Classes Phyllis Baker and her group designed this
class to help cultivate skills in drawing, sketch-
ing, painting, or any other suggested media.
Classes are on Friday mornings from 9 -11 am
in the Garden Room.
Badminton Join this group in the gym for a game that’s,
while low impact exercise, plenty fun and
competitive. Monday & Wednesday at 1 pm.
Ballroom Dancing Marty & Phyllis Phillips lead a dance session
every Wednesday from 10 - 11:45 am in the
Garden Room. All are invited to join in the fun
of creating new memories from old tunes-
though, when hearing the songs through a top-
of-the-line Bose sound system, none show
their age. Participation can mean dancing or
just listening to the music.
Bible Study All are welcome to join Eric Nordin and his
flock every Wednesday at 10:30 am. If
without a bible, the group will be happy to lend
one. Come enjoy this refreshing class and
group discussion.
Bridge The bridge group meets every Thursday at 12
pm in the Garden Room. Go join them!
Bunco Play this wildly popular and easy-to-learn dice
game every Thursday at 10 am.
Line Dancing Joanne Brady, an expert instructor who’s
taught country-wide, encourages both
beginners and intermediates to participate in
the fun. Class is every Tuesday from
10:45 - 11:45 am and costs $3.00 per class.
Please remember to bring appropriate dance
shoes, which high heels are not.
Pickleball Pickleball, described as “large scale Ping-
Pong”, is now available at Mid-County! The
sport is played on our badminton courts. Stop
in the gym Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or
Friday at 10:45 am to observe or play.
Pinochle The pinochle group plays every Monday at
12:00 pm. All are welcome.

new members. No experience is needed, just
the desire to enjoy the game and have a good
time. Stop by from 8 - 10 am if interested.

chair-based exercises, this class, taught by
Debbie Franey, meets Monday, Wednesday,

The class is from 9 am to 1:30 pm and aims to
keep you and others safe on the road. Advance
sign up is required. The cost for AARP members is
$15.00 and, for non-members, $20.00.
Tea Luncheons
Tea luncheons offer fun and friendship on the back of an age old tradition:
sharing a meal. The (non alcoholic...sorry) aperitifs aren’t limited to liquid,
though; guests are asked to bring a pre-determined dish for others to sample.
And lest you think this affair is limited to princesses, think again!
Princes are welcome to take part as well.
If interested in attending a tea luncheon, please see Sally.
Who says old dogs can’t learn new tricks? Put those
youngsters to shame with your newfound technological
prowess; soon, the grandkids will come to YOU for
tech support! Whether your skills can be described as
‘intermediate’ or ‘knows where the power button is
with 60% accuracy’, now’s a great time to learn!

Devote 8 seconds to learning new informaon
To remember something, ac$vely recall what you want to
remember for 8 seconds, as this is the amount of $me a
human brain needs to process and store new informa$on.
Create an acronym
To remember a list, create an acronym that relates to the first
le5er of each word. For the Great Lakes, HOMES HOMES HOMES HOMES (HHHHuron,
OOOOntario, MMMMichigan, EEEErie, and SSSSuperior) allows you to associate
a word with the first le5er of each Great Lake.
Walk for 30 minutes a day
Physical exercise is one of the most beneficial ac$vi$es for
both mind and body. Some studies show exercise triggers the
release of BDNF, a protein related to healthy nerve produc$on.
Review the informaon a?er you learn it
AOer learning new informa$on, review the informa$on again a
few hours aOer learning it.
Work on understanding basic ideas first
When a5emp$ng to learn complex informa$on, concentrate
on the broader ideas of the informa$on before diving into the
complicated details.
Write down what you’ve learned
By typing or wri$ng informa$on down, you make it easier for
your brain to imprint, or store, the informa$on.
Eat a Mediterranean Diet
Lots of fruits and vegetables, fish, and olive oil make up the
Mediterranean diet, which can decrease the chance of
developing memory problems by up to 20%.
