Appliances are used everyday in the modern
home. The oven, the washing machine, the
refrigerator, to name a few, have all become a part of
our daily lives and many people will have serious
difculties without these household appliances.
In the past these appliances were luxury
items, so only a few could afford them, now
they have become so widespread that most
people purchase them for their homes, and
change them ever so often. The question is,what to look for when searching for these
former luxuries. Many people simply consider
the prices and possibly the brands, but there
are many more things you should consider
when buying an appliance for your home.
Firstly, you should consider the SIZE and
the style of the appliance. This is important
because before you even consider buying the
item you should make sure that it can actually
t through your doors and into your home. If
the appliance cannot t through your doorsthen obviously it is not sensible to buy it.
It is also wise to consider whether it will t
neatly into the area you want it to be placed.
Consider a style that ts and a style that blends
nicely with the theme of your home. For
example if your home has more of a relaxed
style, then buying a fancy, complicated washing
machine will confuse the feel of your home.
The next element to take into consideration is
the COST. The cost of owning an appliance has
three essential components; the initial purchase
price, the cost of repairs and maintenance and
the cost to operate it. In terms of the price of
an appliance, you should not gravitate towards
cheap rst, because, the cheapest appliance is
not always the best on the market. Very often the
cheapest item comes with a high maintenance
cost and you end up spending much more than
if you had invested in a pricey but high quality
appliance. The appliance that is a bit more
expensive but is of an excellent quality will last
for a much longer period, and will cost less tomaintain. In this case you do actually save money.
The next step will be to make sure the appliance
is fully functional before you buy. Try to avoid
buying an appliance spontaneously. Consider
the features of each appliance and if possible ask
to test the appliance before you purchase it to
avoid unnecessary hassles. Be sure that the seller
has after sales service and offers a guarantee
on the essential parts and labour. The rst
appliance you see is not always the one for you.
Comparisons between appliances are also
important when purchasing. Compare between
different brands and models. Avoid buying a
brand that you are not familiar with unless you
are personally condent in it’s ability. It is best
though to know a brand and to know its level
of reliability. For example a popular appliance
name is Panasonic. It would be disappointing to
buy an appliance and then later discover it does
not match your expectation. You would probably
want to return it if it does not please you.
however, this is not always possible as the retailer is
under no obligation to accept a returned applianc
simply because you do not like it. this is the law
Appliances must have some kind of defect i
performance or workmanship for the retail
to consider accepting it as a returned item
You need to be mindful accodring to th
Adverse Trade practices act retailers ar
constrained in how they advertise and not plac
no return or refund on their receipt/invoice
When buying an appliance for your home it i
also important to consider the current crise
in our world. Global warming is currentl
affecting our world, and because of this th
whole world is going green even in buying
appliances. Energy efcient appliances wil
reduce the amount of energy and resource
you use which saves you money. Some green
appliances are not yet available worldwide bu
you can play your part for some appliances
For example; Did you know that refrigerator
use the most energy? This is because they ar
always on. However you can help this situation
in terms of the type of refrigerator you buy
Size and features affect the energy. Smalle
refrigerators use less energy, so only buy wha
you need. The door features such as water an
ice dispensers use more energy so if possible you
can avoid these. Characteristics of new energy
efcient refrigerators include better insulation
better efcient compressors and more precis
temperature/ defrost controls. The improvedefrost control also reduces freezer burn
In buying appliances, during the nancial crisis
it is also wise to consider whether or not you
need the appliance. Try not to buy an applianc
simply because you like what you saw. Buy wha
you need for your home. Prioritize and buy wha
is on the top of your list. You can also budge
a price range that you will like to stay within
but remember that cheap is not always the bes
so be a little lenient in terms of this factor
So those are the basic steps and now...YOU
CAN SHOP. Remember to rst conside
size and style, then cost, functionality
comparisons, going green and the curren
nancial crisis. These factors can help you
in buying the best appliance for your home

To what extent the EnvironmentalManagement Authority is monitoringauto body garages for propermanagement and disposal of waste?
With so many pollutants and wastedproducts in the environment today weare seeing more and more companies
provide “green” solutions. Manybusinesses have already gone with a“go green” campaign to help lessen theiraects on the environment in a harmfulway.
With that said auto body repair shops are
also joining the “go green” campaign. So,if you are looking for a great auto bodyshop for your vehicles repairs and youare concerned with the environment, place emphasis on nding a shop thatnot only provides great results but alsois helping the environment while doingso.
First of all you should be familiar withwhat “green” means. Well to have a“green” products means that it causeslittle disruptions to the environmenthow it is made.
Using renewable or recycled materialsmakes it a little more greener. It alsohas to do with how many chemicals arereleased into the environment duringthe whole process involved in achievingthe end result.
Simply put the saying “go green”means to become activelyinterested in environmentalissues and support environmentalcauses.
Since we live in our environment and itaects our lives, many people, should, become aware of the problems weinict on our environment and strive to
make a dierence in how we do things. We want our earth to be around andin a good state for our children andgrandchildren.
Auto body repair shops have thepotential to become a “green shop” incommunities all around the world.
First of all auto repair instead of replacement is great alternative tothrowing the old pieces and parts of carsinto landlls to sit forever. Many autobody shops have even begun recyclingmaterials used on a day to day basislike card board, paper, and other suchmaterials.
Even old windshields can be recycled if there is no way to repair them. Also howthey handle any chemicals that they mayuse and if they contain them so that theyare not released into the environment.
Also it can go as far down the line as tohow they receive and manufacture toolsand materials for their business needs.
So, since many people are looking fora “green” change for the environmentmany businesses are taking theopportunity to help out and “go green”.
So, if you want to do your part you canchoose to conduct business with thosethat are making the eort to reducetheir aects on the environment in aharmful way. After all, we all want ourchildren to be able to grow up on a greatplanet with less harmful emissions to theenvironment.
it is plain to see that how some businesses
manage the disposal of their waste isnot good for the environment and inturn not good for us since we live in theenvironment. So, be part of the changeand “go green” with auto body repairs! The environment is in your hands now.

Let’s Talk Business IV
In our discussion in the last issue we discussedthat all communication implies that there isa targeted audience to whom the messageis directed. Today we want to focus ondetermining the communication objectives.
Determining this objective is dynamic moreso if the company is not a sole trader typeof company. Because in a sole trader thereis only one individual who determineswhat those objectives are. However, as you
go further aeld into partnerships, privateand public, and government institutions, marketing objectives have to be consistentwith corporate strategy, and in some casesthe objective may be a directive of the boardor managing director or general manager.
A good marketer although not the framer of the policy objectives can inuence policy
However, if you are a sole trader most likelyyou will not have unlimited resources andyour considerations for determining yourcommunication objective will be inuencedby your access to resources, so, prioritizingis the key. In addition, you will have to
determine to what extent your are able toachieve the objective, for example you maywant to raise awareness of your product orservice, but surely you will not be able todo this on a national level, you may have tofocus in your local area or some specic areaor group of people.
Before a decision is made about thecommunication objective an issue that needsto be settled is the identication of the targetmarket and its perceptions. The target marketwill be the set of persons and businesses thathave purchasing power, and to whom theproduct or service will satisfy a need but whoare not aware of the existence of the product
or service and its ability to satisfy their need.
Perceptions will relate to how individuals andbusinesses view your product and service, they may have a colored or distorted view of the product and service and so act inimical toyour business interest.
Based upon the foregoing, the sole trader willbe seeking a change in behavior and attitudetowards the product and service in one of the following areas: cognitive, aective orbehavioral responses. What this means is thatthe sole trader wants to put something in theconsumer’s mind, change an attitude or get
the consumer to act favorably towards itsproducts and services. Now there are dierentmodels of consumer-response stages thatcan be used in the marketing process todetermine the focus of your communicationobjective.
According to marketing theory all thesemodels assume that a buyer passes througha cognitive, aective and behavioral stage in
that order, ie. a learn-feel-do sequence. Butthere are alternative sequences, example, there is also the do-feel-learn and the learn-do-feel sequences. These sequences describethe level of involvement that the targetmarket has with the product and or service. The table below will illustrate
Learn-feel-do
This sequence is appropriate when targetmarket has high involvement with a
product category perceived to have highdierentiation
Do-Feel-Learn
Is relevant when the target market hashigh involvement but perceives little or nodierentiation within the product category
Learn-Do-Feel
Is relevant when the target market haslow involvement and perceives littledierentiation within product category
The responsibility of the sole trader at thisstage is to choose the right sequence thatbest describes the level of involvement thetarget market has with his their products andservices.
Having decided on the sequence the soletrader should now apply another modelto the process, which will enable them toanalyse their target market perception evenfurther.
Next time we will discuss the application of the response hierarchy models

WE HAVE CARRIED THIS ARTICLE
IN THE LAST TWO PUBLICATIONS
BECAUSE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE
INFORMATION IN BEING PREPARED.
NOTWITHSTANDING THAT WE DID
NOT HAVE WEATHER LIKE LAST YEAR.
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT PEOPLE KEEP
THE INFORMATION IN THEIR MINDS
The hurricane season is upon us. One might ask
“How do I prepare for something that I don’t
have the slightest clue about?” For all of you out
there who have ever asked this same question,
don’t worry, after reading this article you will
not only know how to prepare for a hurricane
but you will also get useful tips on what you cando during and after to keep the hurricane termed
a ‘risk’ and not a ‘disaster’.
According to Oxford’s dictionary, a hurricane
is defined as a tropical cyclone with winds of
74 miles (119 kilometers) per hour or greater
that occurs especially in the Western Atlantic,
it is usually accompanied by rain, thunder and
lightning. Hurricanes can cause a lot of damage.
The main dangers associated with hurricanes
are high winds, storm surges, tornadoes and
flooding.
1) High winds are winds in excess of 74 miles
per hour that are known to cause structural
damage to buildings, roads, bridges and crops(especially trees).
2) Storm surges occur as a result of high winds
pushing on the ocean’s surface, causing the
water to pile up higher than the ordinary sea
level. Storm surges are said to cause the most
damage during a hurricane.
3) A tornado is a violent rotating column of air
extending from a thunder storm to the ground.
Up until Sunday 9th August tornadoes were the
weather system least thought to occur here in
Trinidad. But yes, tornadoes can be formed right
here as a result of harsh atmospheric conditions
such as hurricanes or even heavy rainfall as the
residents of Central know too well.
4) Flooding or Flash Flooding we Trinbogians are
all too familiar with. It is the sudden outpouring
of water, in low-lying areas, usually brought on
by heavy rain-fall. It is said that more people die
from flooding than the actual hurricane.
Now that we fully understand the main dangers
associated with hurricanes we can now use
this information to help us better prepare
for whatever the hurricane throws at us.
Remember if we fail to prepare, we prepare to
fail. So let us prevail together, by preparing for
the hurricane.
Tips on preparing for a hurricane
Trim tall trees that are close to homes and
electrical wires
Remove unused building material and tool
from around the house - go hazard hunting
Clean guttering and drains on a regular basis
Assemble a first aid kit , food and water to las
for at least seven days
Assemble an emergency kit that would contain
small tools like plastic sheeting, rain gear
blankets, work gloves, flash lights, boots, tools
portable radio and batteries.
Secure all important documents like you passport, marriage certificates, birth certificates
deed, in an air-tight bag
Identify an alternative place to stay like by
friend or relative and ensure your family know
this in the event you cannot be found at home
If you live in low-lying areas it is best you get to
a safe spot or stay with a friend during periods
of heavy rainfall.
If you are wheel-chaired bound, stay in it. Mov
to cover, if possible, lock your wheels, and
protect your head.
NOW THAT WE ARE ALL PREPARED, THE TASK I
NOT DONE, HERE ARE SOME USEFUL TIPS ON WHAT
TO DO DURING AND AFTER A HURRICANE.
During a hurricane
Remain calm and stay out of danger
Stay indoors and away from windows (flying
objects can become missiles)
Beware of the eye of the storm, it is a false
calm
Listen to your radio
After a hurricane
Check for missing persons. Tell the Police/Fir
services right away if someone is missing
Stay clear of down electric lines. Contact the
utility
Do not go sight-seeingBoil water unless told i
is safe
Attend to the injured and special population like
the elderly, children and the visibly impaired
Do not use food from flood water
Listen to your radio
