What more should we do to attract and meet the needs of clients who are commercializing new technologies? This session will be led by Nancy Crickman of the Pennsylvania SBDC Lead Office.

seasoned international trade professionals, Martin Brill, Ed Huttenhower, and Dr. Mary McKinney. The panelists will share their knowledge and experience about the processes and politics of utilizing existing partnerships in order to help clients secure export related funding, success factors and examples of creating winning funding proposals for the SBDC with international trade programs, and a step-by-step walk through preparing clients for international trade missions. The forum will be moderated by Sofia Ozol of the Pennsylvania SBDC Lead Office.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES - Wednesday, November 5, 2014 Biographies listed in order of appearance “MAKING IT” KICK-OFF Christian Conroy State Director, Pennsylvania SBDC Sessions: “Making It” Kick-off, What’s New in Manufacturing As State Director, Christian Conroy is responsible for the management and oversight of the Pennsylvania Small Business Development Centers program, a $12 million network of eighteen university-based centers that annually provides management education and consulting to 20,000 entrepreneurs and business owners through utilizing professional staff, students and pro-bono professionals. Christian has been with the Pennsylvania SBDC program since 1994, leading efforts to achieve the program’s mission of helping companies start, grow and prosper, though pursuing improvements and innovations to boost efficiency, quality and impact; and to obtain the financial resources to sustain and expand services. During his tenure, he has successfully steered the network through three national accreditation reviews, most recently in 2011. The network is one of only twelve in the nation that also has supplemental accreditation for its technology commercialization services. Christian is active in supporting the development of the national network of Small Business Development Centers, currently serving as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of America’s SBDC and on the ASBDC Accreditation Committee. He has also testified before both houses of Congress in support of bills to expand the SBDC program. Christian has a Master’s Degree in urban studies from the University of Pennsylvania, and undergraduate degrees in economics and psychology from the University of New York at Albany. Nancy Crickman Director, Environmental, Energy & Technology Services, Pennsylvania SBDC Lead Office Session: “Making It” Kick-off Nancy joined the Pennsylvania SBDC Lead Office in 2001 and oversees the SBDC's statewide environmental, energy and technology services. As the director of the Environmental Management Assistance Program (EMAP), Nancy ensures that small businesses receive timely and high quality environmental compliance assistance. Pennsylvania is one of only eight SBDC networks in the nation with an additional technology accreditation, where Nancy leads coordination and delivery of the network’s technology commercialization services. Nancy also manages the network’s shale energy services which provide support to small businesses exploring opportunities in the shale energy industry. Recently, Nancy was re-appointed by Governor Corbett to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Small Business Compliance Advisory Committee and serves as Vice Chair. At the national level, Nancy co-chairs the Sustainability Workgroup of the Small Business Environmental Assistance Provider Network and the Shale Energy Interest Section of America’s Small Business Development Center Network.
Helen Hammerschmidt Director of Policy, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Session: “Making It” Kick-Off
Helen Hammerschmidt brings twelve years of experience in federal and state policy development and legislative affairs to the Department of Community and Economic Development. As a legislative aide to a former Member of Congress from Pennsylvania in Washington, DC, and later as Policy Director for State Representative Duane Milne of Chester County, Helen has served the citizens of Pennsylvania at both the federal and state levels. Helen’s federal policy experience stems from her work with Daiwa Securities’ Institute of Research in Washington, D.C., where she analyzed health care reform, banking regulations, and commercial policy for Daiwa Securities, one of the largest security firms in the world. Prior to joining Daiwa, Helen was the assistant to the Vice President for American Foreign Policy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a foreign policy research institute in Washington, D.C.
As Director of Policy for the Department of Community and Economic Development, Helen is responsible for directing and shaping policy for the agency’s 90+ programs that support business financing, innovation and investment, tourism, film, community development, municipal government, and international trade and investment. Helen is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and has a Master’s degree in International Affairs from Johns Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). She is also a graduate of the Anne Anstine Excellence in Public Service Series, which trains Pennsylvania women for careers in public service.

Eric Esoda, CPA Executive Director/CEO, Northeastern Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center (NEPIRC) Session: What’s New in Manufacturing Eric Esoda joined NEPIRC in 1998 and, since that time, has held positions within the organization’s consulting, business development and financial management departments. Prior to joining NEPIRC, Eric worked with the New York offices of the accounting and consulting firms of Fust, Charles & Chambers, LLP and KPMG. Mr. Esoda has several professional publications to his credit and has been a contributing researcher and author to several statewide and national publications on the manufacturing industry, CEO learning behaviors, and the impact of various economic development policies and programs upon the business sector. As a regular presenter at national conferences, Eric has hosted workshops and keynote presentations on topics such as manufacturing innovation, innovative approaches to addressing the shortage of qualified workers, how corporate culture impacts organizational strategy and how companies can effectively use Voice-of-the-Customer feedback to make business decisions.
Eric holds a degree in Accounting from the University of Scranton and a Master’s degree in Accounting from Binghamton University. He is a Pennsylvania Certified Public Accountant, a former Officer of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants and is in pursuit of his Innovation Engineering Black Belt from the Manufacturing Extension Partnership, University of Maine and world-renowned innovation leader, the Eureka Ranch.
Lindsey Gilkes Senior Management Consultant, University of Pittsburgh SBDC Session: What’s New in Manufacturing Lindsey Gilkes joined the University of Pittsburgh SBDC as a business consultant in 2007. Since then she has provided business consulting services to a diverse range of new and existing closely-held businesses. Although Gilkes works out of the Greene County and Washington outreach offices, she functions as an integral part of the SBDC team seeing as she is familiar with this select market and supports western Pennsylvania businesses. The core of her consulting work revolves around strategically analyzing functional areas of businesses such as management capabilities, financing, income, cash flow projections and loan packaging. She also specializes in conducting market research of new, existing, and potential markets. Lindsey holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Washington & Jefferson College and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh. Jeremy Hancher Environmental Consultant, Environmental Management Assistance Program (EMAP) Pennsylvania SBDC Session: What’s New in Manufacturing Jeremy Hancher has been employed with EMAP since 2005 providing environmental consulting and technical assistance on compliance issues related to air, water, and waste regulations that impact Pennsylvania small businesses. Prior to that, he worked at a Pennsylvania manufacturing company where he served as the day-to-day environmental compliance specialist. Jeremy earned his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh, his Master’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Certificate from the Wharton School. He currently acts as co-chair of the Technical Subcommittee for the national Small Business Environmental Assistance Programs. Gretchen Kukuchka Business Consultant, The University of Scranton SBDC Session: What’s New in Manufacturing
Gretchen rejoined The University of Scranton Small Business Development Center in 2013. As a Business Consultant, she focuses on serving Bradford, Tioga, and Lackawanna counties. At the SBDC, Gretchen also provides direct coordination for the Small Business Internship Initiative Program, linking Lackawanna County small businesses and local college students with internship experiences. Gretchen is also part of the Marcellus Shale Team of the Pennsylvania SBDC system.
Raised in a family business and today assisting her spouse in running his own business, Gretchen understands a 9 to 5 schedule is generally a misnomer, and that having flexibility, confidence, and a constant planning perspective is critical to the success of any venture. Gretchen particularly enjoys aiding existing businesses who present challenges and need guided solutions. Gretchen has an interest in HR issues, leadership, family business and succession plans, and strategic planning, but can amply address any small business topic by pulling together a great team of SBDC in-house expertise and/or local business and economic development partners. Gretchen is a graduate of Virginia Tech and The University of Scranton’s Master’s degree in Human Resource Administration.
Bruce Love Program Analyst, Office of Small Business Assistance, OSHA Session: What’s New in Manufacturing
Bruce A. Love is a Program Analyst for the Office of Small Business Assistance (OSBA) in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in Washington, DC. In this capacity, he crafts policy and develops data analysis tools for monitoring and evaluating the performance of OSHA’s On-site Consultation Program and serves as a National Office liaison for small businesses. Prior to joining OSBA, he served as Technical Writer-Editor in OSHA’s Directorate of Technical Support and Emergency Management and as a Project Officer in OSHA’s Variance Program. Prior to joining OSHA, he served as an assistant professor and Chair for the Information Technology Department at Mount Aloysius College (Cresson, PA), Coordinator for the SBDC in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and Lead Electronic Design Engineer for Magnavox-GAC in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bruce has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from Spring Garden College, and an M.B.A. from La Salle University.

As Palo Alto’s VP of Business Development, Caroline Cummings brings an excellent perspective to our entrepreneur customers. As the former co-founder and CEO of two technology companies, she’s experienced both start-up failures and successes, and has raised close to $1 million in investment capital. Her first venture, OsoEco.com (healthy social shopping), dissolved in 2009. Her second venture, RealLead (mobile marketing for real estate) sold in early 2012. She has co-founded several successful entrepreneurial programs for the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce, including Smart-ups Pub Talks and the Southern Willamette Angel Network. Caroline is regularly invited to participate as a judge for several business plan competitions, as well as speak on topics including entrepreneurship, angel investing, social media and authentic self-promotion. She is a graduate of Drexel University.
Philip Frank IT Project Leader, Pennsylvania SBDC Lead Office Session: Neoserra Updates and Q&A As IT Project Leader with the Pennsylvania SBDC Lead Office, Phil leads Pennsylvania SBDC's technical transitions and provides general IT support. Phil brings more than 15 years of experience to the position, most recently enhancing a client software package for Meals on Wheels organizations. He previously worked at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School as associate director of Marketing Information, where he was he was responsible for direct mail, databases and marketing systems such as CRM. Prior to that, Phil also held several productivity and manual systems analysis positions.

Borick is a Professor of Political Science and Director of the Muhlenberg College Institute of Public Opinion. He is a nationally recognized public opinion researcher who has conducted over 300 large-scale public opinion surveys during the past fifteen years. The results of these surveys have appeared in numerous periodicals including Time Magazine, The Wall St Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Washington Post. He has also provided analysis for the BBC, National Public Radio, PBS, CBS News and NBC Nightly News and had his survey results aired on CNN, FOX News and C-Span. During his career he has conducted surveys for a variety of government agencies and organizations including the Center for Disease Control, PBS, The Wisconsin Department of Commerce, the Oneida Indian Nation, The U.S. Department of Labor, and Habitat for Humanity. He is co-director of the National Surveys on Energy and the Environment (NSEE) and currently conducts surveys for the Morning Call newspaper in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He has served as President of the Wisconsin Political Science Association and is currently President of the Pennsylvania Political Science Association. He has government experience at both the federal and local levels, including positions with the Internal Revenue Service and Monroe County Pennsylvania Planning Commission. He has published and presented over twenty-five articles and four books in the area of public policy and public opinion. Ken Baker CEO, AdvantaPure/NewAge Industries Session: Business Retention: Using Business Succession Planning and Employee Ownership to Keep Local Businesses Local Ken Baker has over 25 years of experience in the plastic tubing and hose industry. His father, Raymond Baker, started NewAge® Industries, Inc. in 1954, and Ken joined the company in 1985. Under Ken’s nurturing, NewAge has become 40 percent employee owned (ESOP) and has twice been recognized as a finalist in Winning Workplaces’ Top Small Company Workplaces. In 2001, Ken led the company in the launch of its AdvantaPure® sanitary products division and this continues to be his primary focus. He is a co-inventor on three patents in RFID tagging technology and a co-founder in the RFID in Healthcare Consortium. He invites area high school students to intern at NewAge Industries each summer and is a generous contributor to local and national charities. Timothy Garbinsky Outreach Coordinator, National Center for Employee Ownership Session: Business Retention: Using Business Succession Planning and Employee Ownership to Keep Local Businesses Local Timothy Garbinsky is the outreach coordinator at the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO), a nonprofit membership and research organization dedicated to providing the most objective and reliable information possible on employee ownership. As outreach coordinator, Tim is responsible for managing the marketing and outreach efforts of the NCEO, from the recruitment of volunteers to working with allied organizations, to creative project design and press communication. Originally from Maryland, Tim has worked as a creative and educator on three continents over the past five years. He earned his B.A. from Duke University in 2009.
Judith L. Kornfeld Founder and President, ESOP Economics Session: Business Retention: Using Business Succession Planning and Employee Ownership to Keep Local Businesses Local Judith L. Kornfeld is the founder and president of ESOP Economics, a firm that specializes in forecasting and analyzing ESOP repurchase obligations. ESOP Economics also offers the Telescope™ software, a program developed specifically for modeling repurchase obligations. Judy has been working with ESOP companies for more than 25 years on all aspects of ESOP repurchase obligation planning, focusing on developing strategies for managing and funding these obligations. In 1993, she founded ESOP Economics to create a resource to which companies could turn for advice and services related to their repurchase obligations, which were just beginning to emerge as an important issue. Over the years, she has authored many articles about ESOP repurchase obligations and is a frequent speaker at regional and national ESOP conferences.
Judy currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO) and on the Advisory Committee of the Employee Owned S Corporations of America (ESCA). Judy received her B.A. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania, her M.B.A. from The Wharton School, and her law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
Keith Yurgosky Business Consultant, The University of Scranton SBDC Session: SBDC Client Social Media Best Practices Keith Yurgosky has been employed with The University of Scranton SBDC since 1994 where he has taught topics from Organizational Behavior to Public Speaking as an adjunct professor. At the SBDC, he holds dual roles as both a consultant and trainer. As a consultant he handles start-up businesses, but specializes in internet marketing, social media marketing and website design. He also consults businesses on international trade, business planning and market research. His training topics include EBAY and NxLevel™ education, in both of which he was trained and certified to be an educator. Besides consulting, his other responsibilities include maintenance of the web presence for the University of Scranton SBDC and The KSOM Women’s Entrepreneurship Center. He has presented training programs at the America’s Small Business Development Centers’ Annual Conferences in years 2009 through 2014. He staffs the SBDC’s outreach office located at the Penn State Learning Center in Lewistown. In addition to providing free, confidential one-on-one consulting to current or prospective small business owners, he has developed and instructs educational programs and seminars for the SBDC. Michael specializes in researching accounting and tax issues, and preparing detailed financial reports for SBDC clients. He has worked with clients in many different industries, including construction, landscaping, retail, food service, and real estate investment. Prior to joining the SBDC, Michael worked for a manufacturing company and in the banking industry. He is a Penn State graduate, earning a Bachelor’s degree in accounting. He has been named one of Pennsylvania Business Central’s Top 100 People in Business and served on the board of directors of the Juniata River Valley Chamber of Commerce. Cherrill Wilson Associate Director, Temple University SBDC Session: Consulting Best Practices Cherrill Wilson is the Associate Director with the Temple University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition to beginning her relationship with Temple as the SBDC Incubator Manager and Business Consultant, Cherrill brings to the SBDC team over 20 years of financial service experience in banking and accounting services. She has worked as an accountant, bank auditor, senior credit analyst, and financial consultant.
