In today’s Good News Jesus tells us “The scribes and the Pharisees have taken their seat on the chair of Moses. Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.” In other words practice what you preach. This is important in many situations. The most obvious is for priests and deacons and those in shepherding positions in the Church. But also in government, in business, in sports and in the family. The last two of these has the greatest potential for impact on children — the next generation and the future of our country and our Church. Sports figures, like it or not, are role models for children. Athletes may think they are “entertainers” and in reality they are. They get paid millions to…play, unbelievable as that may be but some are highly gifted in their sport. With great gifts come great responsibility. Unfortunately some have not been given the mentoring necessary to life up to that responsibility. I believe that this all comes from the family. If one is taught to live ethically at our parent’s knees then that lesson will more than likely be carried though our lives. Not to say that you can’t “teach an old dog new tricks”. According to Neuroscience, human brains are adaptable even into their 80’s and 90’s. But for it to really stick it has to be taught early. Those older persons have to make a conscious effort every time they are faced with an ethical dilemma. Do I lie? Do I steal? How best to look out for “#1” and stomp on all the other “insects”? The first and best teachers are parents. The best way to teach is through example. If we say don’t lie or don’t steal and then turn around and do those things, what are our children going to conclude? Children understand more the what we think and sometimes the misinterpret things so we need to be very clear. Speak with your children. Ask them what they did today. tell stories of your family and of you growing up that build them up to be honorable adults. Tell stories of heroes and saints people that they can admire. Nobody’s perfect but we all have good qualities and gifts which we use to further the Kingdom of God. The best time is at dinner time. Turn off all screens — TV, pads, pods, monitors — ALL OF THEM and TALK to each other. What a novel idea!

The Bread and Wine that are being offered at our Eucharistic Celebration this week are in loving memory of Bill Stewart. This is a gift from his wife.
