On March 15, 2007, Eric Clapton's world tour stopped at San Diego's iPayOne Center (originally the SanDescription:Diego Sports Arena and now the Valley View Casino Center). The band lineup for the tour continues to be a firmfan-favorite, with Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall II on guitars, Chris Stainton and Tim Carmon on keyboards, WillieWeeks on bass, Steve Jordan on drums and backing vocalists Michelle John and Sharon White During the set, EC'slong-time musical inspiration, JJ Cale, sat in for five songs, including three from their Grammy-Award winning album,The Road To Escondido, released in 2006.

In the Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek and the Dominos, as well as through his prolific solo work, guitaristEric Clapton has re-defined his own version of the blues. In October 1963, Keith Relf and Paul Samwell-Smithrecruited him to become a member of The Yardbirds because Clapton was the most talked about guitar player on theR&B pub circuit. When he became a member of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers in 1965, Clapton established hisreputation as a guitarist and earned his second nickname: “God”. After leaving the Bluesbreakers in 1966, Eric teamedup with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker to form the worldwide-acclaimed band Cream. While a member of Cream, hecemented his reputation as rock’s premier guitarist and was elevated to superstar status. In the summer of 1970, Ericformed Derek and the Dominos with Jim Gordon, Carl Radle and Bobby Whitlock from Delaney & Bonnie’s band. TheDominos would go on to record the seminal rock album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. His career reachednew heights in 1992 with the release of Unplugged and the Grammy winning single, “Tears In Heaven.” Clapton is theonly triple inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame (as a member of both the Yardbirds and Cream and as a soloartist). two musicians began work on the project when Muhly was composer-in-residence at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven in theNetherlands. The songs' lyrics were inspired by or culled from video and commentary the pair found on YouTube.Muhly and Teitur will perform songs from the album with New York Baroque Incorporated at New York's (le) PoissonRouge on Friday, October 21, and with British Sinfonietta at Cadogan Hall in London on Saturday, October 29.

"We came up with this premise of boring videos, home videos," explains. "It was a time when everyone wasTeiturposting these meaningless videos. It was just fascinating when we started watching them … The more you watchedthem the more you started to wonder, 'What is behind this? Why are people doing this?' They are really saying, 'This isreally beautiful, this is really sick, this is me,' people confessing things. And that gave us the title for the record."

"Teitur took a lot of these things," continues Muhly, "and looked at the comments and imagined the world that thesepeople inhabited. We also solicited some anonymous Dutch videos, people telling us things that are unexpected,including this woman who said 'I love the smell of my printer in the morning.' It made me so happy. That smell is sospecific. These are not confessions in a dirty way but more like if you went over to a friend's house 10 minutes beforethey expected you and you got a glimpse into something private. As a songwriter, Teitur focuses on a little detail or alittle gesture, and then one can divine bigger content."

mission is "to convince a large and varied audience of the flexibility and vitality of (Baroque)Holland Baroque'smusic." As Muhly notes, "They perform standing up, and they are as old school as you'd like, but they chewed into thismaterial really gleefully. It was a kind of magic project actually."

When he began his tenure at Eindhoven, Muhly says, "I knew I wanted to work with this Baroque ensemble. Thedistance between contemporary listening and Baroque music is one of the most heartbreaking and interesting things.Most of the music I like is from the 17th century or before. It's a tradition that never stopped—a small tradition, aspecific one. There is something incredibly direct about Baroque music and Baroque instruments." He continues, "Butit also posed a different challenge. Baroque musicians aren't accustomed to the sorts of rhythms attendant tocontemporary music, and that brought another interesting tension to the project."

The original four songs from Eindhoven worked so well that Teitur and Muhly continued writing. By 2009, they had aconcert-length piece comprising the 14 songs onConfessions. Muhly, Teitur, and Holland Baroque toured theNetherlands, performing the piece with the videos that inspired it projected behind the players; they recorded thesongs at the end of the tour.

The Swiss-and-French flautist Emmanuel Pahud is one of today's most exciting and adventurous musicians. Born inGeneva, he began studying music at the age of six. He graduated in 1990 with the Premier Prix from theConservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, after which he continued his studies with Aurele Nicolet. At theage of 22 Emmanuel joined the Berliner Philharmoniker as Principal Flute under Claudio Abbado, a position which hestill holds today. In addition to his engagements with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Emmanuel enjoys an extensiveinternational career as soloist and chamber musician. Emmanuel appears regularly at leading festivals throughoutEurope, the USA and the Far East. He has appeared as soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras includingthe London Philharmonic, Zurich Tonhalle, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Mariinski, Camerata Salzburg, DeutscheKammerphilharmonie Bremen, Cincinnati Symphony, Washington National Symphony, NHK Symphony and theScottish Chamber Orchestra. She changed the waypeople thought about opera, but she also became famous as the glamorous celebrity who fell in love with AristotleOnassis, leaving her elderly husband to live with him on his yacht Christina and enjoy the high life with theinternational jet set. Of course it ended badly. She lived her life like one of her own tragic heroines who (as womentend to do in opera) sing, suffer and die. And her own death came at just 53, after a dazzling but short career that tookin heavy roles alongside decorative, nightingale-like ones – ignoring the established rules of vocal health and probablyexplaining why her voice finally gave out as it did. But in that time she did extraordinary things, using the muscle ofthose heavy heroines to empower the nightingales with strength and depth of feeling nobody had thought to offer thembefore. She gave them credibility as drama. Her performances were absolute and self-exposing: she held nothingback. And she was even tougher on herself than she could be on others – which is why her voice was never quite theflawless instrument singers are meant to cultivate. Her personality was far too volatile and too self-sacrificing in its loveaffair with risk. In the mythology of opera, though, that’s what the audience demands. We want the diva to be both agoddess and a slave: to give her life for art. We thrill to the dimension of that sacrifice. And Callas dutifully obliged.(Michael White, 2014)

Maria Callas was born to a Greek family in New York in 1923. Her vocal training took place in Athens, where herteacher was the coloratura soprano Elvira de Hidalgo, who had sung with Enrico Caruso and Feodor Chaliapin. Afterearly performances in Greece, Callas’s international career was launched in 1947 when she performed the title role inPonchielli’sLa Giocondaat the Arena di Verona in Italy. Her voice defied simple classification and her artistic range wasextraordinary. In her early twenties she sang such heavy dramatic roles as Gioconda, Turandot, Brünnhilde and Isolde,but over the course of her career her most famous roles came to be: Bellini’s Norma and Amina (La sonnambula);Verdi’s Violetta (La traviata); Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Anna Bolena, Cherubini’s Medea and Puccini’sTosca. Though her timbre was not always conventionally beautiful, Callas’s musicianship and phrasing were in a classof their own. She brought characters to vivid life with her skill in colouring her tone and making insightful use of thetext. She is credited with changing the history of opera: by placing a perhaps unprecedented emphasis on musicalintegrity and dramatic truth, and by transforming perceptions – and reviving the fortunes – of the bel canto repertoire,particularly Bellini and Donizetti. The 1950s marked the height of Callas’s career. Its base lay in the opera houses ofItaly, and she became the prima donna assoluta of Milan’s legendary La Scala – notably in the productionsof LuchinoVisconti – but her operatic appearances also encompassed London’s Royal Opera House, the New York MetropolitanOpera, Paris Opéra, the Vienna State Opera, and the opera houses of Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Lisbon, and, in theearly 1950s, Mexico City, São Paolo and Rio de Janeiro. From 1959, when she started a life-changing love affair withthe Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, her performing career slowed down and her voice became more fragile.Her final stage performances came in 1965, when she was only 42. There were many plans for a return to the stage –and for further complete recordings – but they never reached fruition, though in 1974 she gave a series of concerts inEurope, North America and Japan with the tenor Giuseppe di Stefano; he had partnered her frequently in the operahouse and in the studio, not least in the 1953 La Scala Tosca under Victor de Sabata, considered a landmark inrecording history. Callas died alone in her Paris apartment in September 1977.

Martha Argerich, born in 1941, is widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. She was born inBuenos Aires, Argentina.

Argerich rose to international prominence when she won the seventh International Chopin Piano Competition inWarsaw in 1965, at age 24. In that same year, she debuted in the United States in Lincoln Center's Great PerformersSeries. In 1960 she made her first commercial recording, which included works by Chopin, Brahms, Ravel, Prokofiev,and Liszt; it received critical acclaim upon its release.

Anneleen Lenaerts released a first album on Warner Classics in 2014, with concertos by Jongen, GlièreDescription:and Rodrigo. For this second album, Anneleen and Dionysis selected some of the most beautiful Romantic chambermusic pages, amongst them Schumanns Fantasiestücke Op. 73 and Romanzen Op. 94, and Schuberts ArpeggioneSonata D 821. Western art music has, in one way or another, always been recreative. It is about the spark betweenthe musician(s) and the composer, be this through brilliant extemporisation on an early music Urtext, or a beautifullyexpressive performance of a Romantic work. Rarer instrumental combinations have always gravitated notably towardstranscriptions. Sensitively-chosen transcriptions shed new light on their originals, because of the sounds, colours andidentities they bring to the text. In the case of the harp and the clarinet, these colours are warmly unified, profoundlyevocative of the works’ epoch, and of the emotional intensity of the music itself.

In 2008 whilst studying musicology, voice and piano in Montpellier, Marianne Crebassa, then just 21, was engaged bythe Opéra de Montpellier for Schumann’s Manfred conducted by Hervé Niquet.
