“The Thanksgiving tradition was established to honor God and thank Him for His blessings and His grace,“ according to Joseph Farah of World Net Daily. What better way to honor God than to give to those in need. The Human Concerns Committee spearheaded the Thanksgiving Food Collection. With the help of volunteers and weekly contributions, they fed 39 families this week. As food was picked up by the families, warmth built with each smile, hug, “Happy Thanksgiving” wish or tearful thank you. That is part of the reason why members have served for many years, Lois Wilson is the longest standing member at 30 years. She still actively participates in all of the Human Concerns projects. But with all of the projects they organize, this committee needs more volunteers. A few of their projects include: Christmas Gift Card and Gift Collection for Parish Families, Shalom Center volunteering, Christian Appalachian Project, Turkana Missions and their newest one, The Three Sisters Project (more details will be forthcoming). “Our Committee is always ready to welcome new members and volunteers to help us carry out our mission and bring new ideas to the table.” (LouAnn Bruno) Some of the projects need time and talent but others desperately need financial support (Outreach boxes). “Just 50 cents from each parishioner each week or even each month would be a tremendous help.” (Sue Wolf) For more information, contact LouAnn Bruno @ 945-3721 or go to WWW.STMARK-KENOSHA.ORG (outreach ministries)

Saint Mark School News Happy Advent to everyone. This week is the beginning of our preparation time to celebrate the Birth of Our Lord. The students are busy studying about the true mean-ing of Advent and Christmas in their lives. Our spiritual growth continues daily.

The time of thanksgiving was relaxing and we continue to give thanks for the wonderful participants who were part of our Intergenerational Faire held Thanksgiving Week. Our gratitude is extended to the following members of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program: Dorothy Singer, Dorothy Jansen, Connie Seivert, Angie Lange, Barb Grund, Winnie Borland. An outstanding example of time and talent. We also celebrated the graduation of many DARE candidates from all the Catholic Schools in Kenosha. A most prayer-filled lit-urgy was celebrated last Tuesday with the graduation ceremony following and led by Deputy Ray Rowe and Sheriff David Beth. Lights, Camera … Faith! Our First Friday film, this month, is a movie about love, about hearts, and about a woman with the meaningful name of Grace. Entertaining and thoughtful, the story takes romance to a deeper level, as we follow a zoologist by the name of Elizabeth who is deeply in love with her husband Bob, and is unfortunately killed in a car crash. But because she is an organ donor, a young woman (Grace) becomes the recipient of her loving heart. Grace belongs to a very Catholic, Irish-Italian family, and the love of her heart is doubled as a result of the transplant. Grace then allows herself to risk falling in love. Her “yes” to the gift of the heart is an imaginative reminder of the an-gel Gabriel’s encouraging words to Mary: “nothing is impossible for God,” which we will proclaim on Tuesday as we celebrate the holyday Feast of the Immaculate Con-ception. In a world of disappointment and death, we all need God’s love as well as a new heart. Mary said yes to that love, showing the power of grace in her human heart. Rated PG, © 2000, and 116 minutes long, the movie will be shown in the Strenski Center at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, December 4th. Don’t miss this movie!

Parish Evangelization “There are no strangers here… only friends we haven’t met.”

Advent (literally “at the coming”) prepares for the annual celebration of Jesus’ birth at Christmas. But Advent actually has three dimensions. we constantly shift our attention to the past, the present, and the future comings of Jesus. We remember Jesus’ past birth over 4,000 years ago and hope for his future return in glory. But we cannot neglect the present. In this Advent season, as we begin a new Church year, we focus our attention on the demands of responding to Jesus’ presence by following him on the way of disci-pleship. Discipleship can be summed up in our experience of preparing and following the way of commitment, conversion, and cooperation in the saving work of Jesus for our world today. Christian discipleship leads from the joys and difficulties of ministry through suffering on the cross to the experience of new life. Preparing the way is the first step to which our Advent experience is directed. What is needed to be a disciple? Just a few things: attentive hearts, ready to listen to God’s word from within us; the desire to be open to surprise by what we may hear or experience; a profound trust that allows God to light up our hearts with a burning love that will set us on fire for the things of God; and finally, a firm resolve to walk in Christ as we share his light with the world. The focus of evangelization for this first week of Advent is the following: “Who can I share the light of Christ that shines in my heart with?”

The Joy of Gifting Yes, its that time of year again. Thanksgiving is over, and the stores remind us that Santa is coming to town, that halls need to be decked and that gifts will be shared. There will also be televangelists (maybe some priests too) shouting about making Christmas about Christ and put the Christ back into Christmas etc. etc. Now for a while there I must admit I was beginning to agree with them. There is nothing Christ-like with a lot of the push and shove that goes on at Christmas, nor that we may tend to buy things for people that they don’t need or buy something for someone because they bought a gift for us. As parents, we feel the pressure to buying the hottest new toy or the latest gadget our kids have been pressured into wanting. We feel that pressure but know we can’t afford to buy the things our children want. As Catholics though, I feel we are blessed with Advent to take time to prepare. We can prepare to look at Christ’s coming among us in a new and exciting way, through the eyes of a child, through the eyes of adventure and expectation, of newness and love. I think the first step in our Advent journey is to simply say, that Christ is already in Christmas and we don’t need to add anything. Nor should we feel guilty about our shopping. Yes,

that’s what I said, don’t feel guilty about shopping, nor complain about others who do! When else do we see the joy of giving at its best? Thousands of people in and out of stores thinking about others and about what gift they should give! Isn’t that something wonderful? So, I think the first step in our preparation in Advent is a simple one. When you write your list of gifts to get, think long and hard about that friend, family member, person, pray for them and ask what would they like me to get them? It will be the thought (prayer) that counts and that gift will mean so much more to you and hopefully to them because of how you bought it. Even while shopping, do the same, think about the person, the colors they’d like the reason for gifting them, it maybe a person who you are not close to, or a person you are estranged from, it maybe a person who you have fallen out with and want to reconcile with... So whether you have a bigger gift, more expensive or less or even if you give home-made gifts they will be priceless in the love and spirit they are given in. We have four Sundays till Christmas, there will be the inevitable rush and shove and stress, but there will also be the prayer and joy of gifts given knowing the love of God who gives without reservation and gives with a profound love to all who seek. We enter into God’s love when we give that way.

La alegría de Regalar Sí, otra vez es esa época del año. Acción de Gracias ha pasado, y los grandes almacenes nos recuerdan que Santa llega a la ciudad, que las casas deben ser cubiertas de adornos y que los regalos serán compartidos. También habrá tele-evangelistas (tal vez algunos sacerdotes también) gritando acerca de que la Navidad es de Cristo y de meter a Cristo en Navidad, etc., etc. Debo admitir que por un tiempo estaba empezando a estar de acuerdo con ellos. No hay nada de Cristo en el tira y afloja que pasa en Navidad, ni en el sentir que tienden que comprar cosas que no necesita la gente o comprar algo para alguien solo porque ellos nos compraron un regalo a nosotros. Como padres, sienten la presión de comprar el mas reciente juguete o el último electrónico a la venta que nuestros niños dicen querer. Peor aún es cuando nos sentimos mas al no poderles comprar eso que nuestros hijos quieren. Sin embargo como católicos somos bendecidos con el Adviento, tenemos tiempo para prepararnos. Nos podemos preparar para ver la venida de Cristo entre nosotros de una manera nueva y emocionante, a través de los ojos de un niño, a través de los ojos de aventura y esperanza, de novedad y amor. Creo que el primer paso en nuestro camino de Adviento es simplemente decir que Cristo ya está en Navidad y no hay nada que agregar, ni sentirnos culpables por nuestras compras. ¡Sí, eso

fue lo que dije, no me siento culpable por mis compras, ni me quejo de los demás! ¿Cuando más vemos la alegría de dar? Miles de personas entrando y saliendo de las tiendas pensando en los demás y sobre que les deben dar de regalo! ¿Apoco no es algo maravilloso? Por lo tanto, creo que el primer paso en nuestra preparación en Adviento es simple. Al escribir su lista de regalos, piense mucho en ese amigo, familia, o persona, ore por ellos y pregúntese ¿que es lo que ellos quisieran recibir de mi? Será el pensamiento (oración) que cuenta y mucho más lo que el regalo significa para usted y esperemos que para ellos también por la forma en que lo compró. Incluso al ir de compras, haga lo mismo, piense en la persona, los colores que le gustan y la razón por la cual que le regala, quizás sea una persona que no es cercana, o alguien de la cual se a alejado, tal vez sea alguien con quien usted este disgustado y quiere reconciliarse... Así que si usted tiene un regalo más grande, más caro o mas pequeño, incluso si le da regalos hechos en casa, será de valor incalculable por el amor y el espíritu en que se dio. Nos quedan cuatro domingos hasta Navidad, habrá prisas, estrés y los empujones inevitables pero también habrá oración y alegría del regalo del amor de Dios que da sin reservas y da con un profundo amor a todos los que buscan. Entramos en el amor de Dios, cuando damos de esa manera.

Stewardship Corner Advent provides an opportunity for us to begin again and to prepare our-selves anew for the coming of Jesus Christ. It is a time of waiting and expec-tation, of anticipation and preparation. We can use the coming weeks for personal prayer, growth and change in the way we live. Anticipating the Na-tivity of Jesus, we can dedicate special time toward considering our relationship with him. As we recall previous Advents, we remember those who inspire us through their faith and actions. We too can be memorable mentors and models to others through our demonstra-tions of discipleship and stewardship. Thanksgiving Food Drive Because of your overwhelming sup-port of the Thanksgiving Food Drive, 39 of our parish families (199 people) had their cupboards filled and also enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with all of the trimmings. Thank you to everyone who so generously contributed food and/or money. Thanks, also, to all of the people who came to help organize and pack on Saturday and to those who helped with the food pick-up on Sunday. The boys from Cub Scout Pack 507 and Boy Scout Troop 507 were a tremen-dous help! We are grateful to the Piggly Wiggly store on 80th St. for their assis-tance with our large order and for giving us good deals on the food. We also ap-preciate the Ocean Spray Company for donating cranberry sauce, cranberry juice and many of the boxes that we used to pack the groceries.
