Service this week at St. Andrew's

    December 1st, 2019

Theme: Advent 1: Hope This week in worship we begin the

    journey towards Christmas with the

first Sunday of Advent. Advent is a

time of waiting and preparation for

the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    The word advent itself means

“arrival” or “an appearing or coming

    into place.”

The Advent season lasts for four

Sundays. It begins on the fourth

    Sunday before Christmas, or the

    nearest Sunday to November 30.

Advent ends on Christmas Eve and

thus is not considered part of the

    Christmas season. The Advent cele-

bration is both a commemoration of

Christ’s first coming and an anticipa-

tion of His second coming. As Israel

longed for their Messiah to come, so

Christians long for their Savior to

come again. And in the Christian

    tradition we celebrate Christ’s birth

as a baby in a manger on Decem-

    ber 25th.

On each Sunday during Advent we

also light candles in a wreath. This

week our first purple candle will be

lit, and it symbolizes the hope that

    Christ brings to the world.

Also, this Sunday in the St. An-

drew’s tradition, we will be holding

our Cram a Cruiser event collecting

    non-perishable food items. The Hal-

ton Police services will be on hand

to help us fill the police car, and the

    staff of the Georgetown Breadbas-

ket will also be participating. New

for this year, we have reusable bags

provided by the BreadBasket. If you

were at church last Sunday, you will

have received one. If you didn’t get

one, they are available at the church

to pick up, otherwise please bring

food items in whatever method is

best for you. As well, we will be re-

ceiving donations of gift cards to

support families in need and items

for our mitten tree in the sanctuary.

We want to thank you for your gen-

    erosity helping people in need.

MEN’S BREAKFAST CLUB AT ST. ANDREW’S

    Hello All;

The St. Andrew’s Mens’ Breakfast Club has changed in how we get

together. We used to meet at the church once a month and some people

would have to go earlier to prepare the meal. Then people would have to

clean up afterwards. We have eliminated that.

We will now be going to the Georgetown Legion once a month for their breakfast. Six of us

went this month (November) to see what it was like. We had a choice of how we wanted our two

eggs plus a choice of everything or just partial of peameal bacon, baked beans, home fries. Also

two toasted slices of three different kinds of bread. Also juice and coffee. I may have left

something out. All this for just eight bucks! We asked and they would have no problem if we had

a larger group and could put some tables together.

The next breakfast meet will be December 14th, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. at the Georgetown

Legion. The eight dollars is paid directly to them.

    Best regards, Phil.

    CHRISTMAS CARD EXCHANGE

Just a reminder that the original purpose of the mail slots at the

end of the hall past the offices was for a Christmas Card Exchange

at St. Andrew’s. Save on postage and bring your Christmas cards

for Church friends to church! Also, don't forget to check the

slots once in a while for cards addressed to you!

CHRISTMAS OUTREACH PROGRAMS This year the St. Andrew’s Outreach team will be supporting our community

in need through a variety of ways.

MITTEN TREE ON THIS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1st

We are hoping to collect up any handmade or purchased mittens, gloves,

hats and scarves to be thrown on the Christmas tree in the worship service.

Please bring them that day. The donated items will be given to families in

    need in our community.

CRAM-A-CRUISER DAY ON THIS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1st

We will have a Halton Police Cruiser parked at the church right after worship at 11 am to fill with

nonperishable food donations. This will replace our traditional White Gift Sunday. Food items will

be then given to support the Georgetown Bread Basket. Please invite others from the wider

community to join us that day and give food items.

The following are some items that the Georgetown Bread Basket would really

    like to receive:

small instant coffee large juice sugar small flour jam snack bars juice boxes baby wipes meat stew or chili personal care items (shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, body wash) small laundry detergent

SPONSOR A FAMILY / GIFT CARD MAIL BOX

In November and December we will have a mailbox available for people to

contribute gift cards to people in need. Cards to places like Grocery stores,

Chapters, iTunes, Sportchek, Best Buy etc. would be appreciated.

    Deadline will be December 15th.

There is also a donation box available for supporting a family in need

as we have done in the past. If we don’t get enough to support a

family, we will donate the money to an organization that supports fami-

    lies in need.

Thank you for your continued support of our Outreach projects!

    MAMMA MIA!

Thank you to Wilf Gray who organized another successful event to Mamma

Mia. The show was amazing and is sold out for its entire run. Our own Bill Elgie

was outstanding as Harry Bright and our Leslie Hoyle contributed to the choral

    ensemble and production.

The cast was invited back to a pot luck dinner and about 20 of them were able

to attend. All were appreciative of St. Andrew’s hospitality. The amount and

    variety of dishes was amazing and many thanks to all who brought food;

assisted with set up (especially Ross Yahiro who got everything started before

we got out of the theatre) and clean up crew. It was a fun event.

    Colleen & Marie

A big Thank You also to Colleen and Marie who organized the Potluck!

    Humour Corner

How to Address Inmates A pastor just fresh from Bible College, was invited to speak at a chapel service in a prison.

He was very excited but being his very first time, he was very nervous as well. He thought hard how to

introduce his message. On the day he arrived at the prison, he was greeted by a large group of prisoners

waiting to hear him. As the young pastor walked and stood behind the pulpit, he said, ‘Good morning. It’s

so good to see you here!’
