Dear Parish Family,

Today we begin my favorite season of all, the Holy Season of Advent. It’s a funny thing about Advent- while most of us think it is only a season of preparation for the coming of a Baby in a Bethlehem manger over 2000 years ago, there is a significant portion of Advent that is nothing of the sort. Advent, especially in its first few weeks, draws our attention to the coming, not of a Baby, but of an adult Christ who will come at the end of time when all of creation will be caught up into the whirlwind of God’s embrace. This is not a fearful thing for faithful Christians, it is precisely for this reason that we cry out“O Come, O Come Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel…Rejoice! Rejoice O Israel, to thee shall come Emmanuel!” The Church, the New Israel, entreats the Lord to come without delay! Not with wrapped gifts, trees and tinsel, but with salvation and the gift of an eternity of joy! Everything about Advent draws our attention to the coming of Christ and an assurance that “God-Is-With-Us!” The dark blue/purple fabrics of the vestments and altar hangings remind us of the deep color of the morning sky just before dawn, when we are sure the sunlight is about to break forth but hasn’t yet arrived. All of the other trees have shed their leaves in preparation for their winter slumber, but the pines and evergreens hold on to their needles all winter long, and these trees come into our homes to remind us of the ―evergreen‖ love of God in season and out. The custom of the Advent wreath comes to us from Germany when farmers had already gathered all of their summer produce into barns or brought them to market and, in preparation for winter, took the wheels off their carts and hung them in their houses for safe keeping, decorating them with pine and growing candlelight in the increasing darkness of wintertime. Each week as we light another candle we ourselves draw closer to the coming of the true Light that has entered the world, “Christ Our Light” as we will sing at the Easter Vigil later in springtime. Advent is also dense with rich imagery from scripture, not so much stories about Christ’s birth in time until the second part of Advent (after December 17). The first weeks present us with those prophets who foretold the coming of the Messiah. The book “To Crown the Year” says it this way: “During Advent the Church listens carefully to the prophets, but it‟s not to help us pretend that Jesus isn‟t here yet. Isaiah, Jeremiah, John the Baptist, and Jesus together announce God‟s reign which, so they say, is like a wedding day, like a path through the wasteland, like the consolation of the grieving, like the birth of a child. The prophets speak to a people at risk of being crippled by their fears, of being overwhelmed by the work at hand, of lapsing into despair. To hear their words well, during Advent the Church holds off on many signs of celebration. Good listening requires silence, patience, and a disciplined refusal to be distracted. That probably accounts for much of Advent‟s somber character; its purposes are to help us face our fears, to unite with the suffering and troubled, to hear the prophet‟s words that „comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.‟” There are so many wonderful opportunities for us to come together in faith and friendship during these holy days. I hope some of you will join me each Monday morning at 6:30 a.m. before the rectory fireplace for scripture sharing. But also concerts, blessings, school pageants, the Ladies Tea, and all manner of celebration will bring us together as one parish family. I hope to see many of you during these amazing days of grace!

First Friday Eucharistic Adoration — December 2nd „Be still and know that I am God” Psalm 46:11

The Eucharist is the summit of our faith, in which the entire story of our salvation is made real in a miraculous and powerful way. As Advent begins, we invite you to participate in the celebration of First Friday Eucharistic Adoration on December 2nd from 7-8 pm in the Church.

This Holy Hour offers an opportunity for private praise and worship of Jesus, our Lord and Savior – as well as the group prayers of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Holy Rosary – and concludes with

Benediction. Please join us . . .

Social Concern

Food Pantry—The St. Paul Food Pantry is supported through generous donations from St. Paul parishioners. The pantry is located in the front vestibule of the church and is available for all in the community in need. The Food Pantry is open on Tuesdays from 11:30am—12:00pm. Please contact the Parish Center at 201-327-0976 if you need to make special arrangements to access the Food Pantry. Place all food donations in the wooden boxes located at the side entrances of the church. We are always in need of the following items:

Juice, Ice Tea Mix, Snacks/Cookies/Crackers, White Rice, Canned Meat (Tuna, Chicken, Ham), Can Fruit (Peaches, Pears, Fruit Cocktail), Cereal, Peanut Butter, Spaghetti Sauce, Pancake Mix, Syrup, Soup, Canned Vegetables (No Peas Please), Paper Products (Tissues, Toilet Paper, Paper Towels), Bath Products (Soap, Shampoo, Deodorant, Toothpaste), Coffee and Tea.

Please no perishable items…

Christmas Giving Tree – As we wait in prayerful anticipation of the joys and blessings of Christmas, please join in our annual Christmas Giving Tree project. Each year angels requesting gifts for children are placed on the trees in church. The tags are available through Sunday, November 27. Our committee receives the names and requests from Bergen County organizations such as Children’s Aid and Family Services, Shelter Our Sisters, Bergen Regional Medical Center, St Rocco’s Parish in Newark, two classes of children in Orange and several local families in need. Children vary in age and a variety of gifts are requested.

ALL GIFTS MUST BE RETURNED BY SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4. Please securely attach the angel tag to the wrapped gift with the code and child’s name visible. All gifts to be wrapped unless otherwise noted… Please include gift receipt for all clothing purchased... Place your gift in the bins located by the church entrances during Saturday and Sunday mass or contact the Parish Center to make drop off arrangements. If you take an angel and for any reason cannot purchase the gift, please return the tag to the Parish Center, put it in the collection basket or back on the tree. We do not want to disappoint any child, and ask that you please make every effort to provide the gift you have chosen. If requested gift cannot be found, please replace with a gift card… This is a wonderful opportunity for our own children to experience the true meaning of Christmas through giving to others. Thank you for your loving generosity.

Christmas Shopping Spree Raffle

A raffle has been sent to all registered parishioners who will have the opportunity to PREPARE FOR CHRISTMAS EARLY THIS YEAR by participating in the ―Christmas Shopping Spree Raffle,‖ a cash raffle taking place at St. Paul RC Church. Tickets are sold on a first come first served basis, so purchase your tickets early. Tickets are $25.00 each and only 800 tickets will be sold. The church receives 50% of the proceeds from the total ticket sales, which, if all 800 tickets

are sold, would net $10,000.00 for our parish. The remaining 50% is awarded in 3 cash prizes as listed on the ticket. Winning tickets will be drawn on Sunday, December 18 following the Noon Mass.

Youth Group News

Journey January 6 - 8

Journey is a weekend retreat aimed at leaving Ramsey behind and spending a few days alone together as a group exploring our faith, family, friends, and lives. The Journey Retreat is the flagship of the youth ministry program and is the most looked-forward-to event of the year. Activities include exciting icebreakers, talks, small & large group discussion, meals together, free time, reflection, Sunday mass, and group bonding. The weekend culminates back in St. Paul's church where participants reunite with family and friends, share fond memories from the weekend, and watch images captured during the retreat. Registration fee and form to be submitted by December 20. For more information attend youth group meetings.

Christmas Eve Luminaria December 24

Help the youth group spread some Christmas Joy this season by helping to setup the Luminaria on Christmas Eve. Help is needed on December 20 at 5:00pm to get the bags ready and then on December 24 at 4:00pm to set the bags out and light the candles while parishioners attend the 4:00pm mass. Youth interested in helping out with this event must register by December 13. For more information attend youth group meetings.

NOTE: In addition to the help needed from our youth ―groupies‖ we will also need assistance from two parent volunteers. If you are a parent of a youth ―groupie‖ and are available to assist in the lighting of the candles on Christmas Eve, please contact Eric.

High School Youth Group

Meetings are scheduled for Tuesdays from 7:30 until 9:00 pm; gather at 7:15 pm.

Academy of Saint Paul recently received a generous donation of a set of SPRK+ SPHERO robots from a school family. This week the students in grades 7 & 8 worked with the MiP and SPRK+ robots as part of the STREAMS (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, Mathematics, and Social Studies) program for students in Grades Pre-K - 8. Students have the opportunity to control and program the robots to perform various tasks.
