Advent Devotions – Embodying Christmas Elder Nickie Edwards recently wrote:

Christmas is rich with those things we do every year as a family and church family. Traditions are something we look forward to, expect, enjoy, and remember. This year we are faced with changes in plans and traditions, but we can still make magic. I know I plan to try!

Nickie’s words are a powerful reminder of the true spirit of Christmas. Christ the King entered into our human lives, turning everything the world expected on its head. This year, the expectations we have for Advent and Christmas might need to change, but the coming of Christ, the presence of holy hope, peace, joy, and love, the Light of the world remains. Drawing from Nickie’s words, the Worship Committee is putting together a family Advent Devotional, and we hope you will consider sharing your thoughts with our church family. We have two sets of questions to help get ideas flowing. Prompt #1 – What tradition(s) embodies Christmas for you? How does that tradition help connect you to the hope, peace, joy, love and/or light of Christ? How might embracing your tradition or creating a new tradition help you welcome Emmanuel (God with us) this year? Prompt #2 – What tradition(s) embodies Christmas for you? Have you ever had a year when plans or traditions had to change? If so, was that a hard or easy change to make? How have changed plans or traditions blessed you, particularly during the Advent and Christmas seasons? Please consider sharing your Christmas story with our church family. Submissions should be short (between 100-175 words or about 3 short paragraphs), include your name, and be returned to Pastor Phyl no later than November 11th. A fill-in-blank form is also available, if that’s easier for you, just check the Sunday bulletin or email Pastor Phyl.

Hanging of the Greens Advent comes early this year. Christ the King Sunday is November 22, the day we traditionally deck the sanctuary in seasonal finery as we await the coming of Christ our King. Due to Coronatide continuing on into Advent, we will bless three spaces this Advent Season – the West Campus sanctuary, the Downtown sanctuary, and our sacred online space. The traditional symbols will already be in place for our in-person Hanging of the Greens service, but we need your help to make our online worship space holy and holiday ready. Please submit pictures of any or all of the following from your own homes to be shared during online worship – Advent Candles and Advent Wreaths; Paraments, Tapestries, and Banners; Wreaths and Greenery; Christmas Trees; Poinsettias; and Creches / Nativity Scenes. Pictures can be of this year’s decorations for the holiday-eager among us or from previous years for those of us who trim the tree as late as Christmas Eve. Digital photos are easiest to work with. Please send yours to Pastor Phyl by Wednesday, November 11.

Help Us Decorate Sunday, November 22

This year we’re taking our Christmas pageant online so that our whole church family can participate. We need KIDS. We need YOUTH. We need God’s children of ALL AGES. In short – WE NEED YOU!

Following recent tradition, our Christmas Pageant will be “No Rehearsal” style. The lines are taken directly from Scripture. The costumes are taken from the upstairs closet Downtown. You can record a video clip from the comfort of your own home or sign-up for a recording time with Pastor Phyl in the sanctuary. A sign-up sheet for recording times will be emailed out once all parts are covered.

What role would YOU like for this year’s pageant? You can dress up and read the part yourself, or you can dress up and have a loved one (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, older sibling) narrate, or you and a narrating loved one can both dress up! Email Pastor Phyl with your top two preferences, so we can get costumes, parts, and recording times organized. We would like to have all pieces recorded and to the video editor (thanks, Jacob Stutzman) by December 9th.

Available Roles: Mary, Joseph, Inn Keeper #1, Stable Animals (non-sheep … animal noises, no formal lines), Shepherd #1, Shepherd #2, Shepherd #3, Shepherd #4, Sheep (animal noises, no formal lines), Angel #1, Angel #2, Angel #3, Angel #4 (or family group of angels reading together), Magi #1, Magi #2, Magi #3.
