Cover Photos The Camera Club encourages members to expand their horizons as well as show off their work by holding an internal competition every two months. We have a set subject, albeit usually one with many interpretations. We each select five images from those submitted and the nine with the most votes are then displayed in the cafeteria for a month. All those visiting the centre are able to vote for their favourite. The theme showcased in this newsletter is Underneath It All . The 1st place and 2nd place winners are used for The Evergreen Club’s newsletter front page, one each month.

EVERGREEN CLUB NEWSPresident’s message continued

The Evergreen Club is a program of the

Courtenay Recreational Association (CRA), a non-profit organization. The Evergreen Club Executive

Committee oversees the Evergreen Club on behalf of the CRA Board of Directors.

Our Federal Election was the highlight item in September and it seems that it passed with little change in our political structure. I'm sure that the results brought a certain degree of satisfaction to some and to others it was not the outcome you were hoping for. No matter how you feel about it all, voting in our Canadian democratic system is a privilege not to be taken lightly. We enjoy the best kinds of freedom not always available to folks in many other places. That's why it is always disappointing to hear that many did not take advantage of this freedom. Once again it appears that only about two thirds of eligible registered voters in Canada voted in the recent Federal election. Those are not good numbers for a wonderful country like ours. Keeping our democracy strong requires participation and elections are decided by only those who make that effort to participate. Good on those amongst us who did take part.....you should feel good about it all. Our big November event is our Evergreen Club Members meeting on Wednesday November 13th. It will be held in the Rotary Hall and commence at 10am. We intend to provide you with a report on the past years activities and happenings as well as a financial breakdown. There will be a confirmation of your Executive for the upcoming year and we will have a guest speaker to talk on matters of interest to our members. Light refreshments will be served and there will be door prizes. Please plan to attend if you are able.....we would really appreciate your support. We have a great club here with great members and great volunteers that make it all happen.......hope to see you there. Other November happenings include the Evergreen Club Bazaar and Luncheon on Wednesday November 27th followed by the Comox Valley Concert Band presentation of "TRADITION" on Sunday December 1st.....details of these two events can be found in this newsletter. That looks like a wrap for the moment folks......see you all at the MEMBERS MEETING......and REMEMBER, It does not matter if you are a DEER or a LION, when the sun comes up you had better be RUNNING at your best......Adios for now....gk

EVERGREEN CLUB NEWS

A NOTE FROM JANET

REMINDER

The Annual Evergreen Club

Members’ Meeting

Wed. Nov. 13th 10 am Rotary Hall

SpeakerReports

Door Prizes Refreshments

Rainy days and dark mornings are here. I am one of those people who does not like dark days so I really appreciate the cheerful atmosphere at the Evergreen Club.

As I write this there are groups of people meeting for coffee, someone choosing a movie or book to take home, a person on their laptop and someone doing a puzzle. Volunteers are prepping food as the lounge will soon be full with people wanting a hot lunch or a sandwich. Several people have popped by with a question or just to wave good morning. Over the week the rooms are always busy with people making music, playing games, working on crafts and more. It really is a most happy place.

Today I am working on the newsletter, researching topics for a workshop series, getting invoices ready for the bookkeeper, following up on special events, submitting booking changes to the city staff and drinking tea. I will host a New Members’ Welcome this afternoon. There is always lots to do! Fortunately the Evergreen Club has two amazing staff, Cathy and Alisha, and we all work together to manage this exceptional club.

I hope to see many of you at our Annual Members’ Meeting on Wed. November 13th at 10 am in the Rotary Hall. Come hear an overview of the club activities of the past year, meet the Evergreen Club Executive and enjoy our guest speaker.

Members’ Workshops

Members have made the suggestion that the Evergreen Club offer workshops or courses on topics of interest to seniors. Some of the ideas that have been put forward include: cell phone use, a driving skills refresher, online library resources, and first aid for seniors. We are looking in to these ideas and others. If you have any ideas let Janet or Cathy know. These workshops will be for Evergreen Club members only.

We are working on finding speakers and instructors. Some of the workshops will have a nominal fee and other may have a fee for a professional instructor. We are working to keep costs as low as possible for these programs.

The first class to be offered is First Aid for Seniors. The course is taught by an Evergreen Club member, Bruce Hutchinson, a certified Red Cross instructor. He has many years of experience teaching first aid and was a paramedic for 20 years. Bruce is donating part of his time so we can reduce the regular fee for this course. Bruce taught this course to two groups of Evergreen Club volunteers and a number of members came forward and asked if they too could take the course. The first aid course will be offered on Friday November 22. Please see page 4 for more details.

Calling all Betty Crockers and Keebler Elves! The Evergreen Club is requesting donations of your home baked goodies to be sold at the Christmas Bazaar on Wed. Nov 27th. All proceeds raised support the Evergreen Club. We sold out last year in the first hour so are looking for lots more to sell this year.

Please drop off your baking on November 26, packaged and ready to sell, on the cart in the Evergreen Lounge outside of Janet’s office. No need to worry about pricing, we will take care of that for you.

BAKING DONATIONS

4 November 2019 Evergreen Club Newsletter • 250-338-1000 • evergreenclub.ca

The garage sale was also a big success with lots of great items donated. Thank you to everyone who took the time to donate, and of course to all of the volunteers. It takes large group of volunteers to make this event happen and I had many hard working volunteers eager to help out. The sale made over $1600 for the Evergreen Club.

Vanier High School has a program to get students volunteering within the community. The Evergreen Club is pleased to form a partnership with this program to allow the students a place to volunteer. You may notice some high school students volunteering at the club in different capacities throughout the school year. I know our members will make these young students feel welcome while they gain some valuable experience at our club.

The Evergreen Club is planning to roll out a new speaker series on a variety of topics that may be of interest to our members. Janet and I are brainstorming ideas for topics and we welcome your ideas you feel may be of interest. We hope this new venture will further enrich the members experience at the club.

This is an important service for the community that helps people from a variety of backgrounds. If you would like to learn more about this volunteer opportunity please contact me. Training is provided.

Sandwich VolunteersThe kitchen volunteers provide a valuable service to the Evergreen Club. They give seniors a place to come and socialize with peers while enjoying an affordable meal. The kitchen volunteers enjoy being part of a team and getting to know new people. As a thank you they enjoy free coffee, tea, breakfast or lunch during each shift. Our schedule works around your availability, and all training is provided. Commitments can be as little as one 3 hour shift a month.

Special Event Poster Distributors Looking for a way to contribute to the club that will also help you fulfill your daily step count? We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to put up our special event posters around town. This position is flexible. Would you like to put 50 posters up? That would be great. Do you want to put 3 posters up? That would be great too. The posters help spread the word of our many special events.

Call out for Event Planners or Members to Join the Special Events Committee

Do you have your own idea of an event you would like to plan? Working with the support of the Assistant Coordinator and Club Coordinator, Conveners have the freedom to dream up ideas and implement them. A Convener should be organized and enjoy working with other volunteers. Ability to trouble shoot and provide leadership to other volunteers are also assets. Conveners can plan one or several events, this position is flexible.

We are also looking for individuals that would like to join our Special Events Committee. The Special Events Committee usually meets on the first Wednesday of the month to plan upcoming events. If you enjoy event planning and working with a committee this position may interest you.

Drama Club

Darts

The Drama Club has been having interesting rehearsals, working with two casts is challenging for our directors but they are so patient and amazing!

We did have a great time however, hosting a book release and signing in Sept. for our resident playwright and author, Betty Annand. It was a huge success, and everyone enjoyed the afternoon.

NEW EVERGREEN MEMBER? Whether you hung around ‘pool rooms’ back in the day, or have simply always wanted to try the game, feel free to drop in to our room on the Filberg Centre’s ground floor. All Evergreen Club members - female or male, ‘shark’ or beginner - are welcome to use our facilities, and participate in our games. Our room is open from 7:00 am until 9:00 pm each weekday, as well as somewhat more limited hours on weekends. We have two snooker tables, two pool tables, and all the necessary accessories. Please feel free to wander in, talk to anyone, add your name to one of the sign-up boards ... and you will be invited to play on the next available table. Cost is minimal, only a quarter per table, for 20 minutes. NOTE: On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, from 1:00 ‘til 3:30, the two snooker tables are reserved for league play. All tables are ‘open’ at all other times

NEW CUE SPORTS MEMBER! Cue Sports members are pleased that Maryann McConnell has recently relocated from Port Alberni to the Comox Valley - and joined our group. Maryann has won Canadian championships in Snooker, 8-Ball, and 9-Ball, along with many provincial titles across all cue sports formats. She will provide the ‘rest of us’ with both a standard of excellence, and valuable tips on how to improve our own games. Welcome Maryann.

SNOOKER TOURNAMENT Our annual Snooker Championship tournament is now underway. A total of 24 members are competing in a ‘single knock out’ competition to determine this year’s champion. As 3 time winner Eric Nelson is not defending this year, we’ll have a wide-open tournament and a new champion. SNOOKER LEAGUE With our autumn Snooker League near the half-way point, the Blue team continues to maintain a slim lead atop the current standings. Most frames, and most matches, have been closely contested, but it’s worth noting that the Brown team of Gail Szymanski, Jerry Beckett, David Clark, Garth McIssac, and Don McCall is the only one to shut out an opponent - and they have done it twice!

CHRISTMAS PARTY Heads Up Everyone! The annual Cue Sports Christmas Party is scheduled for Friday, December 6th, from 5:00 until 8:00. It’s a casual, fun evening, so prepare a Pot Luck food contribution; wear your worst / best Ugly Christmas Sweater; and, to win a small prize, bring proof of your paid-up 2020 Evergreen membership.

You'll also see long, red scarves for Aids awareness. This is a Canada-wide campaign that ties into World Aids Day. When we finish those, I expect we'll have to concentrate on Christmas.

On Wednesdays at 12:15 and Friday at1 2:30 in the Rotary Hall. There are no fees to play.

Come play the game practice your poker skills and enjoy the company!

Texas Hold’em SocialOur October meeting was very well attended. We enjoyed an informative, very interesting presentation from Russ of the Rock and Gem Club.

A department store Santa claims that he’s the real Kris Kringle, but the world has become so impersonal and cynical that it puts him on trial!

The triumphant family classic comes to life on stage. This is the Christmas story that we all want to believe in! Kris Kringle, a retired old man, is hired as Macy’s Santa in New York, and begins to spread Christmas cheer by directing parents to other stores, where they can find the exact special gift on their child’s Christmas list. As he threatens their commercialization of Christmas, those in charge try to have Kris committed. The stakes are raised with a court competency hearing, and the risk of one little girl’s belief in Santa.
