The first of many important end-of-year events have been held: The Valedictory assembly for all year 13’s on Monday where Oskar Lynch spoke with passion about his time here. We then held the MANA – Maori Achievement Night Awards – on Wednesday evening. This was a huge occasion and a wonderful showcase for the many achievements of our young men. An excellent message was delivered by our guest speaker, old boy Eli Martin. My thanks to Matua Pohatu and the NBHS Whanau on their work with this event.

The senior prizegiving was a chance to recognise the success of our young men in all fields of school life – not just academically. We also recognised for the first time those students who have consistently shown the qualities needed of a lifelong learner such as effort and diligence, regardless of their level of performance. Thank you to all the parents and family who attended in support of their sons – this adds to the occasion and we hope that the move to an evening prizegiving made the event more accessible for you.

As part of this focus on life outside of school, we held another successful and “Sons going on to tertiary study” evening presented by our Careers’ staff. What is clear from all the tertiary providers is the extra emphasis placed on the pastoral care and mentoring of young students. This change has been occurring over many years but your sons today can expect much greater wrap around support than our generation received. They only need access it.

From The Headmaster’s Officeto their expected performance in November. In some cases it will reveal what they don’t know; the good news, there is time for them to rectify that both through personal study.

Again, I believe there is no need to wish our seniors luck for their examinations; they will have created their own luck through hard work and perseverance. These characteristics are vital components for academic improvement irrespective of ability and I am sure will be rewarded come mid-January 2019 when final results are released.

School Leadership 2019In the first assembly in term four our first group of Prefects for 2019 were named. They are: Mihnea Vlad, Daniel Lynch, Leo Watson, Oscar Averill, Sukhjinder Singh and Reid Barker.

These students have already attended a 3 day training camp in the last holidays. More Prefects will be added during term 4 and the full list will be announced at the first formal assembly of the year in 2019. All of the Prefects will then attend a training day and 3 day camp before school starts next year.

Lydiard Cup AthleticsThis team competition requires schools to enter two students into selected Athletics events: 100,200,800,3000, Shot, Discus, Long Jump, High Jump and 4 x 100m relays. Points are scored according to where you’re A and B athletes place.

We had won this event for 20 of the last 22 years, only losing one year when Mr Smith was overseas and not here to organise it and last year when Lindisfarne dominated in the field events and took the trophy off us. Our plan this year was to take out the track events and hope to get enough points in the field to win the trophy.

It was a very close competition. With NBHS often scoring a 1,2 or 2,3 finish in the track events and Lindisfarne taking out most of the field events.

Our place getters were:

Junior Boys:Josh Adegoke 1st 100 and 200, 2nd High JumpRaymond O’Rourke 1st 800Josh Abel 2nd 800Gene Court 3rd 800Sam Elliott 1st 3000Ethan Green 2nd 3000Campbell King 3rd Shotput4 x 100 relay 1st

Hawke’s Bay Today, 13 October:Guy Harrison competing at the Halberg Games (1st 800m, 2nd 400m, 200m and 100m).

The result – a 7 point win to us. So the trophy returns to NBHS hopefully for another 20 years.

Japan Tour 2018NBHS Tour group with Mr Iwakura, the Mayor of Tomakomai (Napier’s Sister City in Japan), and Mr Arrell on the left and Mr Englebretsen on the right. Beside the mayor is ‘TOMOCHOPS’ the city’s official mascot – always present at the ice hockey games that this city is famous for in Japan. This year’s Japan Tour group visited Tokyo, Kyoto, Himeji, Hiroshima, and toured a variety of museums, art galleries, castles, temples and shrines. Families in the sister-city hosted each student during our stay, and this was a particular highlight of the trip. Travelling by bullet train (Shinkansen) was also a lot of fun, as was visiting the Ninja village.

This year, Mrs Hargrave worked hard alongside Kemara Paterson in submitting a special piece into this exhibition, which was awarded 1st Place - People’s Choice Award! Kemara also won a Galaxy Tablet, and a toi Maori Art Market book as part of his 1st placing. Well done Kemara, and a big thank you to Mrs Hargrave for your patience and guidance in making this happen!

Good Finish for the Young Farmers’ ClubIt has been one of the biggest years with the Napier BHS Young farmers’ Club, with national championships, regional finals and events with other schools from around the region plus a solid increase in numbers.

The club was ably led by Finn Beamish and Connor McIntyre this year, replacing Tom Lourie and Angus Parkes. Matt Halford was elected secretary, and Jock Kilmister and Will Robinson were deputy leaders. Together, they organised branded clothing and sorted out events with other schools, which is good for the region in regards to growing young farmer numbers. Junior numbers were also strong, with keen recruiting from the year 9 boys.

In the East Coast finals, Matt Halford and Finn Beamish came 1st, and Guy von Dadelszen and Macabe King were promoted to 2nd, which meant both teams qualified for the National Grand final, hosted in Invercargill. This sparked a heap of fundraising and sponsorship sourcing as the trip for the boys was going to be expensive. As per usual, the boys in the club rallied around and helped with firewood and tree planting as

well as many other activities. The assistance of the parents in this was amazing and the boys were very grateful for this.

Invercargill in July is never tropical and the final was fought out in mud, rain and a wee bit of sleet. Both teams made the top 5 cutoff out of the 14 teams that qualified, and they went to a question and answer shootoff. In the end Matt and Finn finished 2nd in the country and Guy and Macabe 5th, which for year 10 boys is extremely impressive.

The club also assisted with Napier GHS Hewett House club as they had no facilitator on site. We shared fundraisers as well as sorting out a dog Training day with them. Clarke Chrystal, Bex Baines and Tom Manson were wonderful teachers and although the boys were very quiet, the girls asked plenty of questions. There was also events with Woodford house and Iona clubs which were well supported.

Next year brings a new set of challenges, but there is solid leadership, and lots to look forward to. The 51st National Grand Final is

held in Napier, so we will be there helping with organisation. There will be lots of events, with Rathkeale hosting a day at the Masterton Show, and Dannevirke hosting the Regional final.

As always, we cannot thank the people and businesses that help us enough and only hope the NBHS community can support them as well. Many thanks go to Matt O’Kane and Waterright Irrigation and Water services, Mark O’Kane and Bay Heliwork, Steve Dewes (Dewes Contracting, Gisborne), The Turner family, Tony Rasmussen and Tim Wynn-Lewis from Bayleys, Belinda Buchannan and Rabobank, the team at Rural Directions, Grant Charteris, Keith Burden, Eskview YFC, Clint Roebuck, Brendan James from Vet Services HB and Patrick and Isabelle Crawshaw. There are many more and apologies if I have missed you but everything is gratefully received and put back into the club for events and competitions.

We look forward to 2019!

Hawke’s Bay Arts FestivalThe Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival took place in the region over the last 2 weeks. Sam Hutchinson from Harcourts generously sponsored Napier Boys’ High School to allow 50 students to attend a performance. On Friday the 26th a group of year 9 and 10’s attended a performance of Freedom is Behind My Breath, a contemporary local piece involving theatre, music and dance. We are very grateful for the opportunity to expose the boys to something different, and would like to thank Sam for her generosity.

Hire UniformAny student who has hired blazer/grey pants/tie need to return these to the school office IMMEDIATELY. Replacement costs have been put onto school accounts of students with outstanding uniform. It is disappointing when students hire uniform for an event and then retain them. Hireage is for a specified time only and should be returned as soon as the event they hire them for is over - that includes season rugby hire; the season has now finished.

New style summer shirtStudents who currently wear the sky blue shirt are to continue to wear these until they have outgrown them. It’s great to see the interest in the new style shirt but there is no expectation on parents to replace them until necessary. Because of the change in style of both summer and winter shirts we no longer accept the sky blue summer & dark navy winter shirts for second hand sale. Please do not sell these on to 2019 new students as they will not be permitted to wear the old style shirts.

A new style senior shirt will be available next year.

UniformNovember Uniform Shop HoursDue to the interviews & uniform fittings with year 8 students the NEW uniform shop will be closed Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15 November. The second hand shop will be open during the lunch hour Thursday 15 November as usual. If an emergency purchase is required over this week. please see the office staff during normal office hours.

Second Hand UniformIf you wish to place uniform for sale in our second hand shop feel free to leave with the school office. We require the name of the person wishing to receive the cheque, current mailing address and a contact phone number.

While we are no longer accepting the sky blue summer and dark navy winter shirts to on-sell we are very happy to take the shirts for disposal or to donate to current students.

Thank you for ensuring the boys at our school respect the uniform code and look smart.
