HENRY NOUWEN ON LIVING WITH GRATITUDE
“ To be gratef ul for the good things that happen in our lives is easy, but to be gratef ul for all of our lives-the good as well as the bad, the moments of joy as well as the moments of sorrow, the successes as well as the failures, the rewards as well as the rejections-that requires hard spiritual work. Still, we are only truly gratef ul people when we can say thank you to all that has brought us to the present moment. As long as we keep dividing our lives between events and people we would like to remember and those we would rather forget, we cannot claim the f ullness of our beings as a gif t of God to be gratef ul for. Let ’s not be af raid to look at everything that has brought us to where we are now and trust that we will soon see in it the guiding hand of a loving God.”

BOOK OF THE MONTHPOVERTY:
RESPONDING LIKE JESUSBy Fr. Kenneth R. Himes, OFM
The poor will always be with you, Jesus said – but that doesn’t mean Christians have ever figured out how to be with the poor. Pope Francis has emphasized a vision of a “Church that is poor and for the poor.” But growing economic inequality continues to spread across the globe. This book takes a fresh look at the role of churches, and individual Christians, in relating to poverty and the poor among them. A strong focus is placed on the biblical and theological roots of the Church’s commitment to care for the poor. At times praised as a virtue and blessed as a condition, poverty easily confuses us, and we are often left doing little to nothing to make a difference with and for the poor. As a social evil and a burden, poverty has elicited many kinds of reactions among the followers of Christ. It is time for Christians to figure out what to do about it.-Contributors include Pope Francis, Pheme Perkins, Sandra M. Schneider, and Thomas Massaro SJ.

THANKSGIVING EVE MASSWednesday, November 21 at 6:30 PM
There will be no 10AM Mass on Thanksgiving Day
As Christians we should live as grateful people. All that we have is a gift from God. Thankfulness is part of the American DNA, as that from the beginning of the European settlement of the continent, times of Thanksgiving have been set aside.
Join us on the evening before Thanksgiving to give God thanks for all that we have been given. We at the Shrine have much to be grateful for, but most of all, the blessings God has given us in you. Please join us.
FAITH IN ACTIONThe cold winter season is coming, and it is time to think of our brothers and sisters in need of our help. Our winter collection of blankets, comforters, and sleeping bags has begun. There are large collection boxes in the church foyer for your donations. Thank you for your generosity. God bless you.
