A Few Words From Your President There is a questionnaire in this month's Planchet for you to fill out. There is no obligation to do so,

but your feedback is very important to the Club. Please consider filling it out before coming to the

meeting and handing it in at that time. There will also be ample numbers of questionnaires at the

meeting if you forget it or cannot print it out at home. Thanks in advance for your participation.

Our November meeting will be your last chance to volunteer to sit at the ICC table on December 14

and 15 at the ISNA show to promote the Club. Last month we actually lost ground because

someone had a conflict for his signup date. PLEASE consider sitting at our table for at least an hour.

This is a fantastic way to tell attendees about our Club and to meet new people as well. Join me in

signing up for an hour or two.

As was mentioned at last month's meeting, if you would like to volunteer to help with the youth

auction at the ISNA show or donate material for the auction, please see Gary Connor for details.

Mark Eberhardt will be giving his "State of the Hobby" talk at tonight 's meeting. This is a favorite for

our members because Mark gives his opinion on the numismatic marketplace, what 's hot and

what 's not, and where things may be headed in the coming year.

Don't forget that we will not have a regular meeting next month. Our annual Holiday Banquet will

take place on Tuesday, December 4, at the Castleton MCL Cafeteria at 6 p.m. Our popular gift

exchange will take place following the meal, where members can bring a wrapped numismatic gift

of up to $20 in value to be entered into the drawing for and possibly stolen by one of the next

people down the line. It is fun, so if you have not participated in the past, please join us. As always,

spouses and significant others are welcome.

We will be voting for our 2019 ICC Board of Directors at tonight 's meeting. The list of Officers is the

same as presented by Vinton Dove at our October meeting. Changes on the list from 2018 include

Andy Nahrwold assuming the position of Vice-President, moving from the 2017-18 Director 's term

(which was filled by him due to the passing of Bob Betcher); Donn Wray and Jeff Bercovitz rolled

over from the 2017-18 Directors term to the 2019-20 term, and Steve Howery moves from Vice

President to the 2019-20 Directors term.

VP Steve Howery and I visited the Muncie Coin and Stamp Club last Tuesday. We will be sharing a

few thoughts about that meeting and how it compares with our ICC meetings.

I look forward to seeing you at tonight 's meeting, and please bring someone along that may be

interested in coins, paper money, and anything else related to numismatics!

Jim Sukup, President

Box Thalers By Christopher Bower

Today I wanted to share a new acquisition that I am excited about. Box thalers are a part of numismatic history that is rarely discussed any more. Being a collector of German States coins they have always been on my radar as something that I wanted to pick up when I had the opportunity. A recent Heritage auction had 3 examples of which I was able to obtain 1 of them. This piece is actually a 1686 Austrian piece and it still has it?s inserts.

There were many new large silver coins issued in the sixteenth century, and they could easily be regarded as decorative pieces, thalers especially. Many still survive showing signs of having been gilded and/or mounted for wear. Some were also turned into what became known as schraubthalers (or box thalers) which became fashionable toys in seventeenth-century Germany. Augsburg was a particular center of their manufacture.

To make a schraubthaler, a thaler or pair of thalers was cut in half along the edge and hollowed out, with a groove added so that the two halves could be screwed together. One could place small pictures inside: religious symbols, portraits, or other miniature pictures were common (including pornography).

The inserts in this picture were intended to be a type of game or amusement. There

are 5 overlays made on a thin transparent material. When put on top of the picture on the right you could make the maiden appear to have different clothes on.

Eventually, box thalers were made at the mint using genuine coinage dies. The Hall mint in Tyrol was a particular center of these items.

There is no way for me to tell if my example is a mint produce piece or a privately made one. Aside from the modifications to make the ?box? it is in remarkable condition. The collector in me is a litt le disappointed that we lost 2 coins to future collectors to create this item but the history of the item outweighs this feeling. At some point this was probably a value keepsake for a family in the 17th and 18th centuries. I picture a gentleman carrying this in pocket to use as entertainment when his young daughter was getting restless.

Box Thalers tend to sell for higher than their host coins value. Many of them show signs of significant handling for obvious reasons.

Trivia:

Franklin Half Dollars were produced for howmany years?

Answer is at the bottom of the treasurer 's report.

PLEASE try to have correct change, or at least use smaller bills, to pay for auction items that you win. Especially troublesome are $50's and $100's which

quickly drain the change that is available. That change is personal money, and it will be greatly appreciated by the

changer and auction assistants to make giving change easier and more efficient.

Tuesday, December 4, 2018 ? NO MEETING - I.C.C. Holiday Banquet

* For 2018 we are continuing the 'Attendance Prize' drawing at each monthly meeting as an added incentive for all I.C.C. members to attend as many meetings as possible and to encourage new membership. Everyone attending each regular monthly meeting will receive a prize ticket when they arrive at the meeting and sign in at the greeting table. The prize each month will be a 90% silver U.S. Half Dollar (or equivalent or greater 90% silver content coin) The I.C.C. Board members and officers as well as several I.C.C. members chose to act as sponsors and donate the monthly prizes rather than funding them from our budget. You'll find the monthly

prize sponsor listed below each monthly meeting date above. You'll just have to show up to see what you may win!

Please keep this in mind each month; regardless of who is giving the monthly program and/or the topic, we owe it to that person and the membership to remain quiet and pay attention during the program. It?s important that we

respect the knowledge that is being shared with us as well as the time and effort the speaker is donating to our club. The same rules should apply to our monthly auctions; please remain quiet and pay attention. Thank you.
