Welcome, welcome and welcome to all of our regular and new readers. It`s been another cracker of a month with lots of special guests interacting with our pupils here at IES:

25/10/17 Leighton Jones (Education group) 27/10/17 - Sumo Wrestling Suits 31/10/17 Darius Holder / Zach Brown (ID barbers) 4/11/17 Ishi Khan-Jackson (Laughter Therapy)

Halloween`s been and gone bringing lots of excitement, where apple-bobbing was one of the challenges. If you've never tried this, please give it a go and see how hard it is. Did I mention it's a lot of fun also?! This is one of our ethos' at IES school, a fun and happy environment is the best place for children to learn.

We have had two school leavers drop in to IES recently also:

Whitney dropped in to collect her art work and is doing 5 days a week at Nuneaton college doing English, Maths and Employability Skills.

Jarrod came to show us his new motorbike and is doing carpentry at Leicester college. We are so pleased! We are also really pleased with our new pupils who are settling in with life at IES on their induction periods.

With Christmas fast approaching, we would like to ask parents and carers to support us with the Samaritans Shoebox Appeal. If you would like to donate anything, please bring it in to school. It must be able to fit inside a shoebox, nothing dangerous or perishable. Toys, games and stationery are best.

Please look us up on Face book for our closed group and look at the progress our pupils are making daily.

Personally I've always thought Autumn term is the best term due to the change in seasons and festivities ongoing. Yet personally, Winter is my favourite season with sports and BBQ`s in the garden with no midgets to avoid ;-), all you need is some warm clothes on. So maybe you can ask yourselves after reading this what is your favourite season and why? Or, whenever we meet up or talk on the phone you can tell me.

I would like to thank everyone who has contact with IES for their continual support and commitment to improving lives. As through my life experiences which is and always will be ongoing, I would like to end with...this quote I heard at an SLF concert a while back (and even bought the t-shirt!)

" Assume nothing, question everything"

Until next time,

As you know at IES animals play a huge role in our student’s lessons. Each week we have a number of students that visit Dunton Stables in Kingsbury, Tamworth where they all partake in riding lessons, stable management and Equine Theory. Alice(above) left is seen preparing for her lesson whilst Destiny (top right) is making sure that the stables are clean as part of her AQA Equine Theory Award. Here is Tom (below right) having his first riding lesson, Tom really enjoyed himself and this is a weekly activity on his timetable. Charlie (below left) had an impromptu lesson which she really enjoyed.

Above are Lorenzo and Lloyd enjoying a Science lesson. They are making Silly Slime that when you sway it from side to side it turns into liquid but then if you give it a punch it turns into a solid. Destiny has been doing some Yoga in the main hall.

Destiny researched some Yoga positions and then was able to copy them. Fantastic balance.

Paige (above) really enjoyed Halloween at school, she had her face painted as a wicked witch ready for trick or treating, engaged in Apple Bobbing and drew Halloween style photographs. What a smile!

Ali (above) engaged in a Bean Boozled challenge with members of staff. They enjoyed tasting and guessing all of the flavours! Again, smiles all around.

Lorna and Michael above are both seen showing off their final piece for their Arts Award. They have been working hard each week, planning and presenting their work. Well done both, they have passed with flying colours.

Here is Abigail (left) with her carer Will receiving her last package from the Letterbox Trust. The parcels contain books, games and stationery, as well as local information on services such as joining the library and summer reading schemes and activity days. They have been very well received.

More green fingered students. Paige re-potted these aloe vera plants during her gardening lesson. Homeopathic healing.

For those of you who don't know... I was off grid for the week beginning 4th November 2017 undertaking a charity trek to Cambodia in South East Asia. And I am back, sort of in one piece. Looking forward to sharing my tales with the students and staff team here at IES, and sharing with you some of the photographs from my travels here in the gazette. Of course, I was tracking for our very own charity SENDIES, and the JustGiving page is still open for donations - please go over to the site (also through Facebook) and donate what you can - 100% of the monies goes directly to our young people here at IES. And, of course, I am humbled and so thankful for those of you who have already taken the time to donate whatever you can to this worthy cause. Although I would describe myself as having okay fitness levels... I was unprepared really for the very grueling pace of the challenge over four days, in 33-degree heat, up mountains, through rain forests, with minimal washing and toilet facilities, camping (!) and coming up-close-and-personal with a range of wildlife in their natural habitats - you name it - I've seen it (and maybe eaten it) - tarantulas, snakes, scorpions, pigs (almost every rural household has one), chickens, dogs, cats... the list goes on. And, of course, those pesky mosquitos that just got you no matter what... Each day we hiked approximately 15 miles through difficult terrain and in very hot weather. We were up at 5.30am each day (yes, with the sound of the local cockerels waking us up - they're so reliable!) and on the road after a quick breakfast by 6am. No rest for the wicked! So, by lunch-time, it felt like it should be bedtime ;-) At lunch, we were ravenous and treated to a boxed lunch that was brought to us, wherever we might be, by ox and cart. Can you imagine? And of course, don't sit down and rest for too long because those Cambodian ants like to nip you back in to shape (as yours truly is very aware!) By the pm, despite the sore calf muscles and aching hips, the camaraderie of the group from the Global Adventures tour (there were over twenty of us joined together to support their own charities raising money for a range of causes very close and personal to the group), pulled us through to ensure we 'manned up' and got on with the task in hand - which of course was more trekking to the next campsite. With no air con, and the sounds of the natural environment (cicadas, howling dogs) - note to self - take earplugs next time (next time??). By evening (and in Cambodia at this time of year at the end of the rainy season the skies go dark fully by 5.30pm), we were treated to a spurious dinner of local Cambodian cuisine, namely: Chicken noodles with grapefruit segments Wonton soup (with prawns) Fruit dessert (including dragon fruit) The food was mostly delicious and well received by the hungry group! One evening we were invited to dance by the locals around the campsite fires they had set up for us. We were asked to dance to popular 'Cambodian' pop songs- namely Justin Bieber... how funny. Yet we were all ready to go to bed at the end of the night - and it was 8.30pm so tired we were! By the end of the week we were ready to fly home (well I certainly was). We ALL completed the 95k challenge, albeit in various states of health and wellness. Some walkers developed a nasty bacterial infection where socks rubbed with soil; some walkers had excruciating blisters that almost caused people to grind to a halt. Some walkers suffered with knees or ankles or shoulders and needed to be strapped up. For my part, I crashed and burned and when I came home was wiped off my feet with a stomach bug and flu. Thanks again to our remarkable team at IES who kept the show on the road and this meant I could take the time required to recover. You are all legends. The great news? I've done it! Hoorah! The best news - someone else can do it next year! HOORAH! Leanne xx

Cambodia is predominantly a Buddhist country.

As part of our challenge, we had to camp for four nights in the wild Cambodian outback... yes complete with spiders, ants, scorpions and snakes!

Hitching a ride, local style!

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting a rural school, where we were able to deliver goods such as crayons, colouring books and toothpaste. The children were so pleased to see us and the school was very welcoming.

Many households have a dog, a cat, chickens, and a pig! And below, our lunch arriving.

The impressive fifteenth century temple of Angkor Wat. Tomb Raider was filmed around the cities temples here.

Many Cambodian people still work farming the land - we saw children as young as five working in the fields.

Crossing the finish line of our 95k, four-day trek. What a moment after such a tough experience trekking through rainforests, mountains and rivers!

A typical Cambodian style dwelling in the countryside. Many people are farmers and their average daily wage is just 6 US dollars per day.

Saffron-robed monks are commonplace in Cambodia - here were a group enjoying a beautiful waterfall en-route.

We challenge students, parents and carers to enter their own Extreme Reading photos. Please send your photos into school, or send them via our newsletter email, our Facebook page, or text them to Natalie. The best, most extreme and interesting photos will receive a prize and will be published in December’s newsletter! Will you be featured?

Hinckley photographer Rebecca Dawe was in on October 12th to take photos of staff and students across our four sites. Most students opted in and enjoyed the camera. We are sending these photos of your child out to you in the next few weeks - free of charge so no cost to you! (There will be a charge if you want repeat orders, just ask if you would like more).

Miller visited Atherstone library’s science event today and participated in a group activity with eight local children. We learned lots about bones and the way the human organism is constructed. And we were issued with a certificate for our involvement in all of the activities on offer.

As part of her History course, Abigail is studying the Industrial Revolution. She has been to visit the old Atherstone Hat Factory and the site of an old coal mining pit in Baddesley. She is working so hard in class and is making great progress towards her Entry Level .

We hired some sumo suits at Cross Street which were enjoyed by both students and staff! We love encouraging our pupils to work together and take part in team building activities.

Darren Harris a Paralympic, who represented Great Britain in blind Judo and blind football came to school to give a motivational talk to the pupils. Darren spoke about his life achievements, setbacks and future goals. The pupils really loved his visit so much that even Lorna and Lloyd asked when he would be coming back. Thank you to Gus for organising such an inspiring talk.

The lads had a special treat at school when Darius and Zed from ID barbers in Birmingham came to IES to give out free haircuts to the pupils.

Lorenzo, Tom and Lloyd jumped at the chance to have a new style. Again, a huge thanks to Gus for organising this exciting event for IES.

This month, Joe went along to Dobbies Garden Centre in Hartshill to create his Christmas list. Using his Maths and English skills, Joe looked around the store and identified some of the things he wanted to ask Santa for. Joe was able to then write a full list with prices. And, the big debate started…..’when is Christmas planning too early?’

At the end of last term, Year 12 pupil Lorna had an opportunity to go to Warwick Castle for her work experience and be a princess for the day. Lorna was able to go behind the scenes in the princess tower and try the dresses on. Lorna had a great time and is hoping to do another day in the summer. Great work Lorna.
