Our Great Big Crunch took place in October. All staff and students met in the gym to learn about apples and to crunch an apple at the same time. This is an annual event that schools across Canada take part in to promote the healthy crunch of apples. Over 1 000,000 students take part in this event annually. Thank you to YMCA of Greater Toronto for providing the apples for this event.

Scholastic Book Fair

Dear Parents and Families, The Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our library from November 15 to November 17. We invite your entire family to participate by purchasing the latest children’s books. Your support of this vital literary event is a key part of helping us obtain new books and resources for our library. You’ll find hundreds of quality books at our Book Fair with a wide assortment for all reading levels. Visit the Scholastic Book Fairs website at www.scholastic.ca/bookfairs to get more detailed information about these books. Your child will bring home a Book Fair flyer that provides a preview of only a FEW of the many books available to purchase at our Fair. The flyer also contains a special Family Event Draw ballot that parents can deposit during our Family Event. You could win $50 in books – $25 for your family PLUS $25 for your child’s classroom! Don’t forget to mark the Book Fair dates on your calendar! We look forward to seeing you during our Scholastic Book Fair and thank you, in advance, for supporting this great literary event. We accept cheques made payable to our school. Visa, MasterCard and American Express are welcome, too.

Lego Club We are planning to begin a Lego club and are looking for donations of Lego pieces. If you have Lego at home that your child is not using, we will appreciate if you can contribute them to our club. Please send the Lego pieces to the library. Thank you. Math Tips for Parents for November

This year, the Grenoble Numeracy Team will have a focus on: Math is all around us. Most people do

math on a daily basis without even realizing it! Every day we are faced with math

problems to solve. Helping students realize that math is a normal part of life and not just

something they learn in school can be beneficial.

Here are some tips to help your child see the math around them and be good mathematicians:

1. Encourage children to play math puzzles and games.

2. Always be encouraging and never tell kids they are wrong when they are working on math problems.

Instead find the logic in their thinking.

3. Use visual activities such as how many grapes can fit in your lunch box or which container is taller or

the bigger coin may have less value than the smaller coin (nickel and dime)

Page 7: November 2017 - schools.peelschools.orgschools.peelschools.org/1429/Lists/SchoolNewsLetters/Grenoble... · Jannat S., Jeet R., Kaylee C., Makayla B., ... Photos with Santa ... Download

4. Share only positive math experiences with your children. Let them know, that even when you have faced a challenge while working on math - that you persevered and were able to seek help when needed from your parents, teachers and other students. 5. Encourage number sense. What separates high and low achievers is number sense – having an idea of the size of numbers and being able to separate and combine numbers flexibly. For example, when working out 29 +56, if you take one from the 56 and make it 30 + 55, it is much easier to work out. The flexibility to work with numbers in this way is what is called number sense and it is very important. 6. Encourage a “growth mindset” let students know that they have unlimited math potential and that being good at math is all about working hard. When children have a growth mindset, they do well with challenges and do better in school overall. For e.g. “I really like your thinking about that”. When they tell you something is hard for them, or they have made a mistake, tell them: “That’s wonderful, your brain is growing!” For more resources see https://www.youcubed.org Thank you from the Numeracy Team.

Peel schools to rehearse drill for bomb threat or suspicious device/substance this fall In accordance with the Ministry of Education, the Peel board worked together with Peel Regional Police, Ontario Provincial Police and school boards in the Peel region to develop protocols for critical situations including bomb threats, lockdowns, hold and secure, shelter in place in order to help keep schools safe during a potentially serious or violent incident. Schools will review key points of the bomb threat process with students and will initiate a drill once per year, in the fall, to ensure that staff and students know what to do in the event of a real bomb threat or suspicious device/substance. During the rehearsal, students inside the school will remain with or return to their supervising teacher immediately. Students are requested to turn off their cell phones during these emergency procedures. Police have advised that cell phone usage can cause more safety risks and danger than benefits.

Students and staff outside the school are requested to move as far away from the building as possible and remain outside until further directions are given and the rehearsal is complete. The safety of our students is our top priority. Visit the “Safe Schools” page on the school website to learn more about the emergency procedures in place to keep students and staff safe. If you have any questions, please contact the school principal.

#chooseACTION on Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

The Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and

Prevention Week during the week of Nov. 20 to 24, 2017.

This year, we ask our Peel community to ‘#chooseACTION to be

inclusive’ in their classes, offices, schools, or communities, in order to

make these spaces better places for everyone. The Peel Board would

like to hear about the big and small actions, the pledges, the

promises and the attitudes that our Peel community value, and ask

that you take a moment to share your #chooseACTION moments on

social media.

Across the Peel board, schools use many programs and initiatives to prevent bullying and to intervene when bullying happens. Though the

programs vary, their messages are consistent. Students are taught to:

define bullying identify forms of bullying identify the shifting roles in bullying relationships, for example the person who bullies, the

target, the bystander or the trusted advocate determine how to safely “choose action” to prevent and intervene in bullying and

harassment understand that bullying is a relationship problem with relationship solutions determine positive ways to interact with others in an accepting, inclusive way demonstrate character attributes and be a leader to help maintain positive and safe school

communities

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is one of the key items contained in Bill 13: The Accepting Schools Act, that came into effect on Sept. 1, 2012. For more information, visit www.peelschools.org/aboutus/safeschools/bullying www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/safeschools/prevention.html.

Traffic safety in our community Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips to keep students, staff and parents safe while commuting to and from school.

Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school.

Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Adhere to the posted speed limits on any surrounding streets used by students on their way to and from school.

Always yield to pedestrian traffic. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross before driving past them.

When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n'Ride area. This is a supervised area that is designed to keep students safe.

Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or draw your child off the curb and into traffic. Do not take shortcuts over curbs.

Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb. Say goodbye to your child before you park at the curb to let your child out of your car.

During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit the car onto the curb.

Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the school parking lot and treat staff, students, volunteers, passengers and other drivers with respect.

Consider parking off site and walking a short distance to school. This will give you time to talk to your children about their day, review new vocabulary words, math concepts, etc.

Page 14: November 2017 - schools.peelschools.orgschools.peelschools.org/1429/Lists/SchoolNewsLetters/Grenoble... · Jannat S., Jeet R., Kaylee C., Makayla B., ... Photos with Santa ... Download

Remind your child to only cross the street at an intersection or crosswalk. They should never “jaywalk” by crossing in the middle of the street.

Students who bike to school should always wear a helmet, and follow all traffic laws. They should only cross the street at a crosswalk or intersection—never in the middle of the road.

Winter bus safety The following winter school bus safety tips will help to keep your child safe throughout the winter months. Allow extra time to get to your bus stop. Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late evening. Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is snow and ice. Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road

surfaces. Dress properly—winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm. Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children waiting for the bus. Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street. Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt. On very rare occasions, buses are late because of weather conditions or mechanical problems. Talk to your child about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions: When possible, wait with your child for the bus. Make sure your child knows a phone number where he can reach you or another trusted adult. Teach your child how and where to get help. Talk to your child about what a "safe" stranger is. Help your child set up a bus stop buddy system so your child has someone to wait with for the bus.

Prevent the flu. It's in your hands.

Hand washing is the most important way to prevent the spread of infection. Always wash your hands with soap and water when they are dirty.

Clean your hands before:

i. touching your eyes, nose or mouth ii. touching/preparing food or drinks

iii. eating or drinking iv. caring for someone in your home who can easily get sick (baby, elderly or someone who has an

unhealthy immune system) v. first aid

Clean your hands after:

i. touching pets or other animals ii. touching raw meat, particularly chicken

iii. touching surfaces such as a railing or grocery cart iv. touching money v. touching objects sick people have touched

Page 15: November 2017 - schools.peelschools.orgschools.peelschools.org/1429/Lists/SchoolNewsLetters/Grenoble... · Jannat S., Jeet R., Kaylee C., Makayla B., ... Photos with Santa ... Download

vi. touching blood or body fluids such as urine, vomit or feces vii. contact with those who have a cold, the flu, diarrhea or virus of any kind

viii. changing diapers ix. wiping your own or a child's nose x. sneezing or coughing

xi. using a facial tissue xii. using the washroom

xiii. removing gloves xiv. cleaning xv. gardening

What to do when you cough or sneeze:
