What’s your favorite part of your job?I love helping people find the perfect toy, especially the kids. The kids are so happy when they get their wishes. It’s beautiful to see.

Do you have a tip for great customer service?Every day, I make sure we are fully stocked. I want the shelves beautifully presented in the morning. I double-check stock because I want to be sure items are on the floor and available to customers.

What toys do kids like most?Baby dolls and the little cars kids collect are the most popular. They’re classic, but kids still love them. The dolls are my favorites, too, but I love all toys. The toy department is a really fun place to work.

Outstanding Service

A great customer experience starts

with friendly, helpful associates—an area

where this store went the extra mile.

Overnight SuccessThe third-shift associates at Store 4240 help busy mornings run more smoothly.

The overnight team at Store 4240 in Highland Village, Texas, is made up of a tight-knit group of associates who work together to stock freight, change out features, clean under the counters, and help make the store ready for a busy next day. “We try to set the morning shift up for success so they can immediately jump into their routine,” says Nick Wright, co-manager.

Here’s how they work together to get things done:

• Own your area. Working in the same areas every night gives associates a sense of ownership.

• Communicate goals. Clear direction from managers allows the team to focus on top priorities.

• Try new things. Setting up challenges—like trying to get a certain amount of freight stocked by a certain time—can help get the job done and make it fun.

• Work as a team. Overnight team members help one another out, from stocking to assisting customers.

“Our morning customers know, when they come in, the store will be cleaned and refreshed,” says Store Manager Blake Sharum. “The overnight team really sets the tone for the day.”

Last year, Greenlight A Vet inspired a movement nationwide by encouraging people to change one lightbulb to green on Veterans Day (Nov. 11) to show support for

veterans. That led to more than 3.7 million online acts of support, including pictures of green-lit homes and national monuments shared on social media.

This year, Greenlight A Vet is providing more ways to shine a light on America’s veterans.

My Holiday Tradition

TRY IT MY WAY

Scott shares how the holiday meal comes together at his house.

Food has always been a big part of my life. I grew up cooking alongside my mom. I remember the first time I saw her make cornbread and how easy she madeit look.

I also helped in the garden and learned to plant, pick, and prepare vegetables.

Thanksgiving lets me bring my passion for food and family together, and it’s fun because everyone pitches in.

The kids chop veggies. My wife makes pies, and my mother-in-law makes her cheesy spinach casserole. I make my mom’s cornbread dressing, which I grew up eating. She supervises to make sure I’m doing it right!

After dinner, we might watch football or a movie. The most important things are laughing, sharing memories, and reminiscing about loved ones.

Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 2 hours

1 7-lb smoked bone-in ham

1 6-oz can frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed

¼ cup packed light brown sugar

¼ tsp ground cinnamon

12 whole cloves 2 8-oz cans sliced

pineapple in juice, drained well, juices reserved

8 maraschino cherries, drained

1. Preheat the oven to 325 F. Line a roasting pan with aluminum foil.

2. Trim the skin and fat from the ham to leave a ¼-inch layer of fat. Place ham, fat side up, on a rack in the lined roasting pan.

3. In a small bowl, mix the orange juice, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Spread over the top and sides of the ham.

4. Roast, uncovered, basting occasionally, for 1½ hours. Remove from the oven. Discard the foil with the scorched pan juices. Line the pan again with fresh aluminum foil. Stud the ham with cloves and return to pan. Pour the pineapple juice over the ham.

5. Continue baking, basting occasionally, until a meat thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the ham, not touching a bone, reads 140 F, about 30 minutes.

6. Remove from the oven. To garnish, pierce the cherries with toothpicks. Use the toothpicks to attach the pineapple rings to the ham. Cover loosely with aluminum foil and let stand for 15 minutes.

With the holidays just around the corner, it’s time to bring out your best tablecloth. Here’s how to treat it before, during, and after the family dinner.

Save Your Tablecloth!

AGAINST THE GRAVY

Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release Laundry Detergent includes special enzymes that can pull out stains caused by starch-heavy foods like mashed potatoes and gravy.

BEFORE YOU EAT

Dried-in stains can be tough to treat, but try a mixture of OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover powder and water to do the trick on stains you overlooked from last year. Soak the tablecloth in the mixture for one to six hours before throwing in the wash.

NO SPILLS, JUST REFILLS

Try Carbona Stain Devils #8 Coffee, Tea, Wine & Juice Remover to quickly pick up drink spills right when they happen, so everyone can get back to eating.

GOOD ADVICE

NO MORE DARK SPOTS

To remove tough stains from darker food sources like chocolate or cranberry sauce, rub Persil ProClean Power-Liquid 2-in-1 Laundry Detergent into the fabric before washing.

Like last year, there will be only one event time when customers can begin shopping for Black Friday items. That way, you can put your focus on serving customers.

See something that needs to be fixed? Tell your managers. Identifying issues early can help keep customers happy.

Buyers listened to associate feedback: This year, we will continue to make the event simpler and have more of key items so you can help your customers get what they want.

Store managers have used the new Crowd Planning Tool on The WIRE to lay out where merchandise will be, where customers will line up, and where they’ll pick up large items. Check these maps to help people find their way.

When the event is finished (and even while it’s going on), customers will still want to buy everyday items like groceries.

Black Friday is a one-of-a-kind event, and you may be given a task different from your regular job. Talk to your manager!

Have fun serving customers. Give a smile, and you’ll get a smile.

Maps Will Matter

Customers Still Want the Basics

Your Role Matters!

There’s Power in Being Happy to Help

This year, your store will get a collection of 30-inch navigational balloons, color-coded by department, to help customers navigate the store.

Large items will be displayed throughout the store, so customers can see the merchandise before they buy it to make sure it’s what they want.

Over the years, Walmart World has talked to thousands of associates and visited stores nationwide. What we’ve learned: In back rooms and breakrooms, in parking lots and garden centers, from CAP teams to customer service managers, you go the extra mile every day. For your customers, for your communities, for each other.

From California to Maine, you pick up extra shifts, arrive early, and lend a hand to those who need it. You mentor new associates and take advice from long-serving ones. You help fellow associates take trips to see family, give support during trying times, and raise money for those in need.

Jogging buddies. Fishing partners. Event planners. Team members. Family. Always ready with a smile.

You make us Walmart. Thank you for what you do.

Almost every Walmart store in America gives to local food pantries. Associates from Store 2102 in Ludington, Mich., are thankful that they

get to see how giving back comes full circle.

I n 2014, Andrew Lucero and Corinne Hernandez were leaving a church after serving breakfast there when they saw a Feeding

America® truck in the parking lot. “We walked out and said, ‘What

is that?’ ” says Andrew, manager of Store 2102. They learned the truck was a mobile food pantry for their community. The food comes from Feeding America, a nationwide nonprofit that gets donations from a number of sources, including Walmart.

That’s when they put the pieces together. As part of their work at Store 2102, associates in the bakery, produce, and meat areas pull close-dated products off shelves and store them in a freezer for donation. A Feeding America truck picks up the food from the store and takes it to a regional distribution center. Now Corinne and Andrew saw where the food was going: right back to their community. They were inspired to do even more to help.

Gather the TeamFor the past two years, Corinne, department manager, apparel, has gathered a team of associates every month to volunteer to hand out food at the mobile pantry.

A recent event started with the associate volunteers unloading 7,500 pounds of donated food from pallets. People from the community then pulled up in their cars, and the volunteers loaded the food.

“I’m picking up for six families this week,” said LouAnn Tyndall, who was in line with her family. The Tyndalls often get food for area residents who are ill, disabled, or elderly. “It depends on who has a need at the time.”

Work That Matters“Volunteering gives you a new perspective about the need in your community,” says Traci Peplinski, department manager, paper goods and chemicals, one of the associate volunteers. “You don’t realize how many people are truly in need until you go help.” Andrew says these efforts help associates, too, in unexpected ways. He remembers one associate who was struggling at work. After she volunteered at the pantry, he says, “Her attitude really turned around.”

“She said she was impressed with how much Walmart was doing to serve the community and saw that the work she does in the store serves a greater purpose.”

“You don’t realize how many people are truly in need until you go help.”

It’s just after dawn as Co-manager Dugan Harris and some of his fellow associates board a small boat on the broad Columbia River.

Theirs isn’t the only boat. More than 200 veterans and community members are casting lines today as part of a fishing expedition organized by The Fallen Outdoors, a nonprofit that supports veterans by engaging them in outdoor activities.

More than a dozen local Walmart stores have made donations for the event. Dugan, a veteran himself, got his store and some ofits veteran associates involved, including Ken Phillips, maintenance supervisor.

“With veterans, there’s a risk of isolation,” says Ken, who spent a career as a sonar tech on a surface ship in the U.S. Navy. “The guys can get closed up. That’s why keeping them engaged with events like this is so important.”

For Dugan, it’s also a thank you.“We’re learning as a nation that the welcome

home and appreciation from the community are important,” he says. “Today’s event, and all of the other initiatives to bring veterans on board, is a great thing for the company.”

“Veterans are extremely loyal servants to our country,” says Rocco Fasulo. Loyalty is a quality he looks for in the associates he hires, and it is among the reasons why Jerry Dash, a cashier and a disabled Korean War veteran, was a perfect fit for the store. As it turns out, loyalty is a quality that Rocco has in abundance, too.

Jerry’s friendliness and commitment to service have made him a valuable member of the team. When Jerry needed special medical treatment for his back to improve his ability to walk but couldn’t afford the cost of the trip it would require, Rocco had his back.

“Jerry takes care of customers from start to finish and gives them his full attention. I felt compelled to do what I could to take care of him,” says Rocco, who personally covered the cost of Jerry’s flight.

Jerry was touched by the generosity (and has since repaid all the money he received). “I still get emotional when I think about what Rocco did,” Jerry says.

Nov. 11 is a special day for Wanda Timme. It’s Veterans Day—and her son Gregory’s birthday. He’s a former Navy corpsman and a Purple Heart recipient in a family that’s seen members serve in both world wars, the Vietnam War, and the Gulf War.

In honor of all U.S. veterans, Wanda has paid homage to the troops in all six Walmart stores she’s worked in. What started out 17 years ago as two tables featuring a celebratory cake, a shadow box, and some family photos has expanded to a much larger memorial. She displays memorabilia from her own family and from the families of other associates.

“Everyone tells me it’s a beautiful setup, and they really appreciate it,” Wanda says. “I’m really proud of that.”

Store Manager Dee Taylor is proud of the praise, too. “A lot of customers tell me they have family in the service. They see we’re supporting them, and they’re really grateful.”

Located in Norfolk, Va., home of the world’s largest naval base, Store 5488 goes beyond the call of duty when it comes to veteran recognition.

Last Veterans Day, Aretee Santos helped organize the store’s first Greenlight A Vet event. Everything was decorated in green, from cupcakes to registers. They also set up display tables of green lightbulbs— a symbol of support for the troops.

The turnout was amazing, Aretee says. Attendees included the market manager of Market 289, Craig Kelly, and Virginia state Sen. Frank Wagner, as well as many of the store’s veteran associates and customers.

Janet Brown, customer host and U.S. Navy veteran, says she’s thankful to Aretee for helping with the event. “I was honored that somebody took the time to do that for us [veterans].”

Customers also appreciated it. Ryan Tallent, then store manager (now manager of Market 288), recalls seeing one excited customer buy enough green bulbs for his entire street. “When everything is green,” he explains, “it shows we care for those who give up so much so we can have our freedom.”

It all started on the golf course. A sign caught the eye of Barb Miller, personnel manager at Store 2937 (and an avid golfer): “$1 million shootout.” Closer inspection revealed it was a fundraiser for Access North Center, a nonprofit that makes ramps for people with disabilities. Barb volunteered at the event—and inspired her fellow associates to help build a ramp at the home of Sgt. Ben Boldt, a local Air Force veteran.

Eleven team members at her store helped, raising $1,000 through the Walmart Foundation’s Community Grant Program.

“We chose to help Access North Center because we want to make sure our veterans have access,” says Barb. For Ben, the ramp is a life-changer. “I’ve been homebound,” he says. “Thanks to the people from Walmart, I’ll be able to come and go as needed now.”

A Better TomorrowMarcelo is always looking for ways to be better.

Working at this store—which has such amazing customers—has been a blessing from God. I once transferred to another store, but customers here missed me and called for my return. I’ve built my customer service around this teaching: Be better today than yesterday and better tomorrow than today.

When I’m not at work, I enjoy reading about spiritualism and personal improvement. My other hobbies include traveling around the island and listening to the oldies. I also have my family, which includes five children and 10 grandchildren, and my friends, whom I try to support when they are sick or in need.

Page 28: NOVEMBER 2016 - Company· Don’t be intimidated: Take advantage of the opportunities Walmart has to offer. Assistant Manager, Fresh MONIQUE ELEY PROMOTED TO Store 1631 Hampton, Va

Generous HeartJean admires Walmart’s longstanding commitment to helping communities.

Walmart does so much to give back to the community, and that makes me proud to work here. One of the programs we participate in that’s dear to my heart is Sharing & Caring. We have fundraisers in our department and use the money to buy clothes and toys for kids whose parents can’t afford a big Christmas.

I’ve been doing some of the shopping the past several years, and that’s always a lot of fun. Sometimes it’s hard because you’re given a certain amount of money and might have to decide whether to get the shoes they need or the football they want. I usually put in some of my own money and get both.

Healthy MovesWhether on her bike or in the store, Nita gives 100 percent.

Anyone who is around me figures out pretty quickly I’m sort of a health nut, and I try to eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. Walmart helps me do it. I know I can count on Walmart to have lots of fresh, local produce. You’ll find me in the produce department stocking up just about every day!

I also stay active. I’m out on my bike nearly every day, riding past the cornfields and cow pastures near my home. I just love being outdoors, and the bike is a great way to do that and get in a good workout.

Helping OthersDonna’s jobs at Walmart help her make a difference in customers’ lives.

One of the things I really love about working with Walmart is the opportunity to help make people’s lives better.

I worked in store planning for more than 17 years and traveled around the coun-try setting up new stores. At grand openings, people would come up to me and say how glad they were to have a store in their commu-nity and a convenient place to shop. They were grateful for all the job opportunities. Now as a pharmacy tech, I help by talking about our $4 prescriptions and provid-ing information on health and wellness. It’s great to work for a company that helps people in so many ways.

Anniversaries / Texas—Wyoming

When November rolled around, you could find Sam Walton rounding up his hunting dogs, including pal Ol’ Roy, to indulge in his favorite pastime: quail hunting. One of the reasons the Waltons chose the Bentonville area was that it gave Sam easy access to quail in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri.

Sam’s office at The Walmart Museum in Bentonville, Ark., still reflects his love of hunting. See it up close at WalmartMuseum.com.

On the HuntQuail season might have been Sam Walton’s favorite time of year.

HAPPY TO HELP

Quick on Her Feet When Janna Lopez saw an elderly customer struggling with a walker in the parking lot, she sprang into action. “She seemed exhausted. It looked like she needed help,” Janna says. “Being the kind of person I am, I needed to help her.”

Janna talked to the older woman and lifted her spirits while other associates found her a chair to rest in while they loaded her car. The customer was thrilled.

Monica Griedl, store manager, says, “Janna is always going above and beyond for customers.”
