permanent. This has been a long time coming but we have an agreement with Human Resources and I have already seen a few of you processed to permanent.

Our Annual Dinner was held on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at the Victoria Inn and Conference Centre. There were 155 members, co-workers, friends and family who came out to celebrate with 24 of our 43 retirees in attendance being honored at this event. It was a wonderful evening. I wish to thank to Carol Gossel (Chair) and the Social Committee, for the excellent job of coordinating and planning this wonderful evening. We were again honored to have Board of Trustees Chairperson, Sherri Rollins, Chief Superintendent Pauline Clarke, Chief Human Resources Officer Eric Barnaby, Human Resource Officers Joelle Aylward, Lois Pare and Lizette Grivicic, Wellness Co-ordinator Heather Closen, and from Pensions & Benefits Audra Schalk,

join us as our guests. I want to thank everyone who attended this event and everyone who contributed and made it such a success. It really was a great evening and I think everyone that attended really enjoyed it. On behalf of the Association, congratulations and best wishes to all our retirees.

I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful holiday season. I will be off work from November 29, 2016 to the new year as I am having surgery. I will be, as always available by phone or E-mail while I am away. Lorraine Taylor, Administrative Assistant will be in the office while I am away Monday – Friday. Enjoy your time off with family and friends and best wishes for the New Year. See you in 2017! Please feel free to call me at 204-953-0250 (office) or while I am away at (204) 619-0822, if you have any questions or concerns. I can also be reached by E-mail at [email protected].

I can’t believe we are in November already. It seems like just yesterday that everyone was heading back to work and now before you know it we will be off for Winter Break.

If you are interested in looking for new opportunities, remember to check Employee Connect at least once every 5 days. There have been several jobs posted already this year. Remember— if you don’t apply as a permanent person you won’t be considered for the position.

TECH TIPS from Mike Langtry Helpful Hints for Working in Windows 7 Many people are dragged into using Windows 7 without a choice because their new computers probably came with Windows 7 installed. Working in Windows 7 isn’t so hard if you consider the helpful hints in this list. You’ll save time and pre-vent a headache or two! Don’t know what a certain button does in a program? Rest your mouse pointer over the button for a few seconds. A helpful box often pops up to explain the button’s purpose. If you’re baffled, try pressing F1, that “function key” near your keyboard’s upper-left corner. A Help window appears, often bringing hints about your current problem. To see what you can do with something in Windows, right-click it. A menu appears, listing all your available options. Press Alt to reveal any hidden menus in any program, including Media Player. To find lost windows on the desktop, hold down Alt and press Tab. Windows displays thumbnail images of open window. Keep holding down Alt, press Tab until Windows selects your desired window, and then let go of Alt to bring that window to the top. To share files with all the users of your computer, copy them into one of Windows’ Public folders: Dou-ble-click the name of any of your libraries, and two folders appear. The folder named Public is accessible to everybody on your PC (and even a network). If your computer acts weird after you install new hardware or software, use System Restore to set it back to a time when it worked. Click All Programs from the Start menu, click the Accessories menu and choose System Tools, and then click System Restore.

Retrieve accidentally deleted files and folders by opening the Recycle Bin on your desktop. Right-click the deleted item and choose Restore to return it to its original location. To return to an older version of a file you’ve changed, right-click the file and choose Restore Previous Versions. When Windows lists the date of the version you want to retrieve, click the Restore button.

Use Problem Steps Recorder to Record Problems

In Windows 7 there is an awesome feature called Problem Steps Recorder to record your onscreen activities. Click on the start button and write psr on the search box and it will open Problem Steps Recorder. Just click on the record button and show the steps that were causing problems on your Windows PC.

If you ever encounter any problem and want to share the screenshots of the problems and what you were exactly trying to do, you can easily do this using PSR. PSR will record your open windows, clicks and comments and will save it as a mht format and will create a zip folder. Then you can share this zip folder with anyone who can help you to solve the problem. Note that, it will not record anything that you type so it is safe to use. If you want to write something that you think will help to solve your problem, you can add comments by clicking the comment button. If you want to know more; read the Microsoft page about Problem Steps Recorder on windows.

Organize Your Open Windows in Windows 7 While working in Windows 7, you may end up with a screen overflowing with open windows. Organize those open windows in Windows 7 by using the hints in this table:

To Do This… Do This… - See a list of all open windows - Look at the names on the taskbar along the screen’s bottom. - Move from one window to another - Press Alt+Tab+Tab or click the window’s name on the taskbar. window. - Tile the windows across the screen. - Click the taskbar’s clock with the right mouse button and click Show Windows Stacked, or Show Windows Side by Side. - Cascade the windows across - Click the taskbar’s clock with the right mouse button and then the screen. click Cascade Windows. - Shrink all open windows. - Click the Show Desktop icon at the taskbar’s far right edge. - Make a window fill the screen. - Double-click the title bar along its top edge. Maxing a window can also be achieved by dragging a window to the top of the screen, to restore just drag it away from top of screen.

BENEFITS– IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION! Sue Lee is no longer working for Winnipeg School Division. With Sue’s departure Benefits and Payroll has undergone a re-structure. As of October, payroll clerks are now in charge of administering benefits for all employees of the Division as of October. This should prove to be very beneficial to our members as the payroll clerks are aware when there are new employees and they will have the proper paperwork and information for benefit packages. If you have a question about your personal benefits package, or have a life changing event and need to sign up for or withdraw from benefits, please contact your appropriate payroll clerk. You can contact Payroll by calling the Admin switchboard operator by dialing “0” on any Division phone or directly at 204-775-0231. The operation will ask you which employee group you are with and the first letter of your last name. Also in the news on Benefits for 2017 — those enrolled in the Health Benefits will have their deductible waived for the 2017 year. Due to a surplus in the account—the WANTE Council and Executive discussed and decided that a waiving of fees would be the most beneficial to our Members—a nice little bonus if you have to pick up prescriptions in January!

I would like to let the Membership know that the Collective Bargaining Committee held its first meeting on October 5, 2016. We have been compiling and recording the items that have been submitted to the Committee. We have heard from roughly 100 plus members or workplaces. That is a small sample from our overall numbers, but a pattern has already formed. Along with the membership items, the Committee also has some ideas and also input from our Legal Counsel. We will be meeting with the Legal Counsel on November 7, 2016 to discuss and review items. We hope to narrow down the list to best reflect the concerns for this upcoming negotiations.

We will be holding two meetings for the membership to come out and participate. The dates are Monday, November 21 & Tuesday, November 22, 2016. These meetings will be held at Admin Building #2 in Room 106 from 5 to 7 pm. We hope that you are able to attend one of the two nights. When the Committee and Legal Counsel feel that we have finalized our memorandums for an agreement, we will then give notice to the Division to enter into Negotiations. We will also advise the Membership as to when this would take place.

Liaison dates for the 2016-2017 school year are December 1, 2016, February 9 and April 6 2017. To all those who do attend the meetings it is much appreciated.

BUS RIDERSHIP - Everyone including Educational Assistants, Teachers, and Principals should be participating

in school bus evacuation drills to learn proper procedures. - The intent of the training is to create a role memory within students of the process so that,

should a real event occur, the actions are well practiced and routine for the students. - If a supported student has never practiced the drill with the supporting EA, it becomes a panic

situation - particularly for students that are EBD or Autistic. - Additionally, students do not experience a realistic portrayal of the evacuation procedure and

the expectations placed on them.
