Report Card, Looking Beyond the Grades By Bryan Redditt, Huntington Learning Center

It’s time for that first report card! Does it contain good news or bad? The first report card of the school year is an excellent way to communicate with your young student about school. Here are some ideas to make the most out of a report card review.

1. Write questions for the teacher: Really look at the report card. Write down what grades or comments surprise you. Also, make a note of what concerns you most about what you see. Ask the teacher about what they think your child needs to work on at home. It’s good to ask the teacher about your child’s attitude and behavior as well.

2. Note irregular behavior and patterns: If you see a poor grade on a subject your child previously did well with, make a note of it and investigate. Is the pace of the class different than the previous year? Is there a gap in your student’s basic skill—sentence diagramming, for example—that’s just showing up now?

3. Study skills are crucial: Students who are otherwise smart can be short-circuited by disorganization or by time management issues. If your child’s report card indicates a struggle with these challenges, talk with his/her teacher for ideas to develop a homework routine. A systemic approach to studying and keeping track of paperwork can make a dramatic difference.

4. Talk to your young student: Let your child know that you want to help. Review the report card, get his or her point of view, and determine together what subjects they’re struggling with most. Ask how you can best help them.
