From the Chairman

Although I was away and missed the event I understand the evening in memory of Giles Foster was a great success, with a variety of food which Giles loved - beef sandwiches, cream cakes and trifle! Sheila organised a raffle in aid of Manorlands, which raised £400, and prizes for the winners.

The Yorkshire League matches start soon and l wish all the teams success The job of the SeIectors is an extremely difficult one, especially when they have to make changes at the last minute and 1 hope all the players will understand these difficulties and make life a b it easier for them.

Thank you to Sue Sheldrick and her team for stepping in to do the catering for events in October whilst Margaret Brayshaw is away and I am recovering from a visit to hospital (as a patient this time). They are also catering for the Christmas Party.

The Christmas Party is to be held on the 12 December and will be a different format this year · Look at the Notices in the Club , fill in your form and give it to the Steward along with you money. Help to make the evening a success and an enjoyable one

1 do keep asking you for articles for the Kibbitzer , go on , put pen to paper and write about something · you r dog if you want to! Donald is always grateful for something to put into the newsletter other than bridge news ! !

1t may be a 1ittle early but 1 do wish you all a very Happy Christmas, New Year and good bridge . Elaine van Heel 7 October 2015

From the Editor Another Bridge year has commenced. A notable development is the replacement of the Rider Trophy by a new Teams competition, the Giles Foster Trophy. The first winners of the new competition will receive their awards at the next Club Annual General Meeting at the end of January. Would all winners of Club competitions held since the last AGM please attend fr the Presentation of awards which follows the AGM. Also, would any member who feels that some matter should be discussed at the AGM please contact the Secretary in good time, so that appropriate items can be included on the agenda.

The Yorkshire League competition, also known as the Intercities, has restarted. We have had varied results with the B and E teams winning their matches and the C, D and F teams losing. We hope for a better set of results in future rounds.

The new seasons lessons for Beginners and Improvers have commenced.

There are now hosts in position for the Monday and Wednesday Evening and Thursday Afternoon drives. There are a few vacancies in the lists. The three organisers, whose contact details are on the Hosts page, will be pleased to hear from volunteers.

Items for the next Kibbitzer should br with me by Sunday, 17th January.

I was playing with my Hubert Phillips team mate Nick Woolven for practice at Wakefield Bridge Club in April and the hand above came up. Although we hadn’t played for a long time my recollections were we had discussed slam sequences in some detail in the past.

The bidding is highly technical beyond the 3 level and is explained above. I decided to shoot for a top by my final bid of 7NT. I believed that 7 diamonds was cold with a club ruff but hoped we had 13 top tricks with either one of my small hearts being a winner orthe spade queen being opposite Nicks ace and king. Having said that Nicks bid of 5 spades promised only a singleton Ace or void.

When the dummy went down it can be seen 7 diamonds is cold by attempting to ruff one club in hand before drawing the final trump from the opposition. As the queen of clubs falls then one doesn’t need the club ruff at all.

However 7NT is a completely different contract and relies on (assuming the diamonds break about 90% of the time) a combination of hearts 3-3(36%) the club finesse (50%), the fall of the king of spades singleton (very unlikely) or a squeeze.

Squeezes are often written about and the most likely position for a squeeze to operate is when you have one less trick than is required for your contract and your longest suit is run after taking two important steps first i.e.

1. Isolate the menace2. Rectify the count.3. Run you established long suit and discard you losers.4. Finally play you remaining winner and watch careful what the opposition throw away.

The opposition may be unable to keep winners in the two suits and one of your potentiallosers may thus become a winner.

Rectification of the count. If you are squeezing for 12 tricks you need to have 11 winners and have lost a trick and if you are squeezing for 11 tricks you need to have 10 winners and have lost two tricks before you run the longest suit and so on. The loss of the required number of tricks before your long suit is run is known as ‘’rectification of the count’’

I had no need to ‘’rectify the count’’ on this hand as I had 12 top winners and needed one more trick from either the spade queen the heart 8 or the finesse of the jack of clubs.

I therefore cashed the spade ace leaving myself with the queen of spades in hand. This step is known as ‘’isolation of a menace’’

The Bradford Kibbitzer November 2015 www.bradfordbridgeclub.org Page 5

Page 6: November 2015 The a d Kibbitzer f o r d B r · 2015. 11. 4. · had varied results with the B and E teams winning their matches and the C, D and F teams losing. We hope for a better

The opponent who holds the spade king will need to hang onto it or my queen will become good and this forces him to throw away other suits he may not wish to do i.e. onthis hand hearts or clubs or both.

The club jack is also a ‘’menace’’ i.e. not a winner but may become one as is one of my small hearts.

I then run all the diamonds and throw one club, one spade and one heart from my hand. I don’t run hearts first or the entry to the 8 of hearts is lost and I need to reach it is the opponents are forced to throw their heart winner. I then play the rest of my heart winners to find the hearts were originally 5-1 and my 8 of hearts is not good as West hascarefully kept 4 hearts with me.

I then played my queen of hearts and East looked troubled and threw a third club havingthrown two others earlier in the play.

We are now down to the last three cards with AKJ of clubs in the dummy and I need all the rest of the tricks. I could finesse or count up what’s left in East and Wests hands.

A quick count up of Wests hand showed he had begun with 5 hearts 3 diamonds and he had played one spade on my Ace and thrown one other spade.

West therefore had in his hand one heart and 2 black cards and thus at most two cubs which would fall on my ace and king if he had them. If he had 2 clubs then one of them could be the queen of clubs If he had the spade king then he had either no more than one club to start with which may or may be the club queen. The club finesses was thus not appropriate as if the queen was with west it would fall under the Ace or king. This isknown as a show up squeeze as West hand is known.

With this knowledge then East's hand becomes irrelevant as if the club queen remains guarded with east then the finesse fails. If east has the spade king then he cannot guard the club queen and it will fall doubleton.

When the Ace and king of clubs were played the club queen was doubleton all along with West and the contract made. It would also have made had the club queen been withEast together with the spade king.

The matchpoints are shown below and thus 7 diamonds would have been a second top in any event so the risk of bidding 7NT was very questionable.

There is also the possibility that one’s concentration can wane late at night and a slip up in executing the highly technical squeeze could creep in.

Best of luck in your future squeezes!!!

Finally can anyone suggest a route to 7 diamonds for North South should west have opened a weak 2 in spades?

Giles Foster

Giles was born and brought up in Maidstone in Kent and grew up with a love of music, playing both the cello and piano. He moved to university in Leeds in the late fifties to study Maths and also began playing bridge. He was quickly taken under the wing of the - then international - Rita Oldroyd and she helped him to develop his game.

After leaving university, he moved into teaching and what became a 30-year Maths teaching career.Giles had a very long and illustrious bridge career both in Yorkshire and nationally. He was a Grand Master and played for many years at national level with Rita and more recently with Richard Winter and Steve Ray.He often played for Yorkshire in the Tollemache and won the Waddington Shield on 9 occasions with 4 different partners. He was in the winning team in Division 1 of the Yorkshire League at least 10 times. In 1985 he won the very prestigious National SpringFours with his Nottingham partner Wille Crook and later won the Silver Plate in 1990, Crockfords and the Brighton 4 star teams in 1992 and the National TeamsCongress in 1996. Giles has been runner up both in the Hubert Phillips Bowl (twice) and the National Inter-Club Knock-Out.He was not in the best of health in recent years, but his appetite for bridge was undiminished. He won the last two events he played in: the Mixed Pivot Teams (December 2014) and the Yorkshire Pairs in January 2015. He leaves behind his wife of 33 years, Sheila, who has also recently begun to play bridge in Giles' footsteps. We would all agree Giles had a quick wit and was very congenial at the bridge table. His natural enthusiasm and positive nature made him greatcompany away from bridge too. We will certainly miss him.

Sheila adds:-Giles and I met at a social club in Leeds where he knew I had played a bit of rubber bridge. The kind where you can ask the players in the kitchen what to bid next! Our first date was at the Bradford Bridge Club after he had asked me numerous times –I was very reluctant because I had an idea how good he was but agreed on the third asking--on the grounds that if it was a disaster it was his fault.---I had warned him. The club was packed--this was 1981. I bid all evening so he could play--or the opponents. In the end I remember a hesitant 1H from me to which he responded 6H and I remember him laughing at the sight of my face. I also remember that he could not resist checking the score overall at the end--we came last.

A Memorial drive for Giles was held on the evening of Wednesday, 16 th September. There were 14½ tables in play. At the interval members and guests enjoyed some of Giles' favourite snacks.

Emergency!!

The Doctor received a frantic phone call from Mr. Jones who explained that his wife, who always slept with her mouth open, had a mouse caught in her throat."Don't worry, I'll be over in a few minutes," said the doctor. "In the meantime, try waving a piece of cheese in front of her mouth." When the doctor arrived, he found Mr Jones waving a large fish in front of his wife's face."What on earth are you doing?" exclaimed the doctor."I told you to wave cheese. Mice don't like fish." "I know," Mr Jones gasped, "but I need to get the cat out first.

After taxiing down the runway, the airliner suddenly stopped, then turned around and returned to the gate. About an hour later it finally took off. A worried passenger asked the flight attendant, "What was the problem?" "The pilot was very concerned about the noise one of the engines was making," explained the flight attendant, "and it took us a while to find another pilot."
