The Feast of Eternity

?Why is the Feast of Eternity held

on Nov. 22? Well, first, what IS the Feast of Eternity?

It commemorates all those who have

died in the past year, we light candles

and ring the chimes in their memory.

(PS- Please let Donna and Pastor

Hawkins know who you would like

remembered, so we can put their

names in the bulletin.)

Now, why is it held on Nov. 22? We

could say that it’s the Sunday before

Thanksgiving because we are thankful

for those we love… but it doesn’t

always land on the Sunday before

Thanksgiving.

The Feast of Eternity (also called

Ewigkeitsfest, or the Reign of Christ, or

Christ the King Sunday) is always held

on the Sunday before Advent starts.

Advent marks the beginning of the

Christian year; the Feast of Eternity

marks the last day of the Christian year.

On this last day, we remember that

Christ is the heart of all, both the living

and the dead. And that we are

promised that on the last day, we shall

all be gathered at the Great Feast of

Eternity, the wedding feast of the

Lamb. And there shall be no more

crying, nor death, nor pain, for death

itself will have passed away and all

God’s people will dwell in peace in the

Kingdom of God.

And so when we remember our loved

ones at our Feast of Eternity, we are

remembering that we will come together

again; that the parting is not forever; and

that even death shall no longer separate

us from each other. Or as my very favorite

Bible verse says…

“I am persuaded that neither death nor

life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor

powers, nor things present, nor things to

come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other

creature, shall be able to separate us from

the love of God,

which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(Romans 8:38-39)

???And what is this Hanging of the

Greens” thing??? The Hanging of the Greens marks the

beginning of the Christian liturgical year,

when we start looking forward to the birth

of Jesus. The four weeks leading up to

Jesus’ birth are called Advent. The

definition of “advent” is the arrival or

emergence of a notable thing, person or

event (like, “The advent of television.”)

Ours is the advent of the Savior of the

World, Jesus.

In good northern European tradition, we

decorate the Sanctuary with evergreens

(because God never dies) and lights

(because God brings light into even the

darkest day.) And we also decorate the

Christmas tree… because it’s pretty!

(Note: the early German pagans used to

decorate evergreens with small dead

animals like squirrels and chipmunks, but

we rather prefer Christmas bulbs, lights,

and such.) And at Emmanuel, we also

hang gifts like mittens and hats on the tree

to be blessed, so the homeless children

who receive them after Christmas may be

blessed with both warm mittens and our

prayers.

Order SCRIP November 1st!!

Place your orders with Laurie Buckett- they

will be delivered to you the following

Sunday. SCRIP cards are available for

purchases of gas, groceries, big-box stores

and most anything you can imagine. You

pay face value for the cards and Emmanuel

retains a percentage of each purchase. It’s an easy way

to give the church a financial helping hand!

Pastor Nansi uses gift cards to help out those in need with

gas and groceries ($20-$25 increments), so if you can

spare a few more dollars, don’t forget her Care Fund

Ministry.

Trust in the Promise “For surely I know the plans I have for you…to give you a

future with hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

What is trust and why is it important?

Trust is: Assured reliance on the character, ability,

strength, or truth of someone or something. Merriam-

Webster.com

Trust plays a vital role in the lives of humans as it is the

pathway to founding and maintaining a good, morally

mature society. Whether it is trusting another in team

sports, friendship, or just for help and guidance, trust is

able to increase the strength of the bond between any

amounts of people.

The earliest trust relationship is developed with the bond

between an infant and caregiver, most often the mother.

Research has shown that when the caregiver fails to

meet an infant’s primary needs, the child will develop

basic mistrust, which could result in depression,

withdrawal, and maybe even paranoia later in life.

Alternatively, when a caregiver responds quickly to an infant’s cries and a secure attachment is formed, the

benefits extend far beyond the first year of life. Infants

and toddlers that form secure attachments have a far

greater chance of becoming successful children and

teenagers and the majority of infants that showed early

attachment security went on to have attachment

stability in adulthood.

As adults, our relationship with God is often portrayed as

a loving parent/child relationship. There are numerous

verses in the Bible that refer to this relationship: “Truly I say

to you, unless you turn and become like little children, you

will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3

As the fall pledge drive nears we will explore different

relationships in society and how trust is an overarching

umbrella throughout these relationships.

When our trust in God is secure we will surely Trust in the

Promise.

Singing Bowl

Good News! The Singing Bowl has been

ringing to the tune of $110.65 for Repairers

of the Breach. This Milwaukee-based

daytime refuge for the homeless has such a wide mission

that we will be helping through January 2016-you know,

that month when you wake up to the sound of your

furnace and you wonder how in the world anyone could

sleep under a bridge?

The green container for toiletries for Repairers of the Breach is filling up nicely. Just to remind you-Band Aids, lip

balm, cough drops, reading glasses with cases, generic

Tylenol, Vitamin D3, Ben-Gay, instant oatmeal,

evaporated milk and toilet paper have been requested

by the staff at Repairers. NOVEMBER 1ST will be the LAST

SUNDAY these will be collected.

Christmas Mittens! Is it too early to be thinking Christmas? Not when you can

shop for or knit mittens! Yes, the Sanctuary Tree will be a MITTEN TREE. With lovely scarves and colorful mittens it'll

be a joy to behold. Begin bringing them on Nov. 29-

when we’ll be decorating during our Hanging of the

Greens service.

Angel Tree Look for our “angel tree” filled with gift cards and

envelopes in the gathering area on Sunday, November

29. There will be several ways you can make this Christmas a little brighter for someone.

We will lend a hand to families in our community that

need our help during these trying economic times.

Choose a gift envelope from the tree. On the envelope

will be a request from a parent for a toy, book, gift card,

or a needed clothes items like shoes, boots, coat,

pajamas, jeans, etc. for their children. Purchase the

chosen gift, wrap the present, and include the gift

envelope on the outside of the package. If it is a request

for a gift card from a discount store, gas station or

grocery store, insert purchased gift card in the envelope,

and bring envelope back to church and deposit it in box

by the tree. (Don’t forget our Scrip Program when

purchasing gift cards; the church will benefit also by

receiving a percentage of the $ amount on the card.)

OR

Choose a gift bag and fill it with items for some of our

homeless, lonely, and disabled Veterans (there will be a

list of possible items by the tree that are very much

needed such as warm socks, soap, toiletries, chocolate

or snack.). Write a note of thanks for their service to our

country or a note of hope on the attached card and

bring the filled bag back to Church and place by the

tree.

Please bring your wrapped gifts, gift envelopes, or

Veteran’s gift bags back to church by Sunday,

December 13. Thanks for your generosity.

MISSIONS OF EMMANUEL...

Family Promise

As we celebrate our one year anniversary of hosting

families a summary is in order.

We have served:

46 clients (from the ages of 0 – 60)

16 households (consisting of 5 adult males and 16

adult females; 11 boys and 13 girls) Ten families have graduated from the program and

five left the program before graduating.

There have been 112 families that have made

contact with the staff at Family Promise inquiring

about the program but were not admitted. A variety

of reasons were stated as to why these families did

not enter the program. Some of those reasons were:

o Did not qualify

o Did not show up for the interview

o Housing was found quickly

o The family chose not to use our services

o Cases were still open

As we begin our second year of hosting we wish to thank

all of you who helped in so many ways. The families that

have stayed with us express their gratitude for the warmth

and care (and delicious meals) that have greeted them.

Sue and I are very appreciative of all that you do for

Family Promise. Thank you!

SUNDAY SCHOOL We have finished our first lesson theme of Prayer in

Sunday School. We learned about the hand prayer and

the different things we pray for, different ways to pray

(even lying on our backs!) and the Lord's Prayer. Remind

your children to pray every day...and remember to pray

yourself to bring you closer to God. The kids had their first

"concert" singing the song they learned during Sunday

School, too. They did very well! Our next lesson will be on

Jesus as a Boy in the Temple.

REMEMBER: Sign up to be an acolyte through the SignUp

Genius that was emailed. This sign up goes through

December and a new one will go out that will start in

January. Please bring in your child's registration for

Sunday School if you haven't done so already. There are

extra forms in the blue room and in the file folder in the

Christian Ed mailbox. You can drop off your registration

form with a teacher or place in the Christian Ed mailbox.

And don't forget to bring in some extra money if you can

for our offering.

Thank you! The Christian Ed Team.

Christian Ed Music Ministry...Wow what a great

job our kids did singing Seek First! I was very impressed at

their performance. I know many of the kids were nervous

to perform in front of the entire church. It took a lot of

hard work and practice but they did it. Throughout the

month of October the Sunday school students have been

learning Thy Word. We hope to perform this song in

church on Sunday November, 8th please note this date. If

this date changes you will be notified via email. The

Christian Education team plans on video recording this

performance and it will be posted on the Emmanuel

website for you to view if you are not able to attend.

Some of the children requested that they be recorded

because they want to see themselves performing. In the

music portion of Church School we have been learning

about Thy Word and what it means to find your path.

Please note that on October 25th I will not be able to

attend church. Thankfully Melanie Ignatowski will be our

substitute music teacher for the day. Thanks Melanie! Also

in November I will begin teaching

Christmas songs along with or hymn of the month which

will be Lord I Lift Your Name on High. I look forward to

teaching our new music and the children and I thank you

for your continued support.

Blessing,

Ryan Dockstader and the Christian Education Team

What is “Messy Church”? It’s a new concept in teaching the Christian faith to all ages, being tried out by

McFarland UCC outside of Madison. Sun, Nov 8 from 4-

9pm, there’s a national UCC workshop being held at

McFarland UCC describing how it works. Want to come

and hear about it? Let me know! Pastor Hawkins

YOUTH GROUP THANK YOU to Justin & Natasha Sneesby for being our

new Youth Group leaders. An email was sent out to all

the families with kids outlining the basics for the group. It

will include kids in grades 4 through 12 and will eventually

(hopefully) meet weekly on Wednesday nights from 6-

7:30 PM. The first gathering is coming up on Wednesday,

October 21. The group is doing a ‘soft roll-out’ so may not

meet for a month after the first gathering. A survey was

sent out by the Sneesbys resulting in a name for the new

group: REVOLUTION!

Some of Justin’s thoughts on the new group...

... I want our youth group to stand apart from the rest not

necessarily be apart or not include other groups on

mission trips, community outreach etc. I want us to be

leaders. I want us to be the talk of the youth groups

because I want us not only worship and play games but I

also want to be a place of acceptance and I think now

days our youth find it hard to find a place like that. I not

only want the group to be leaders but do it with love and

respect for the human race. I want the youth group not

only be leaders but I want them accept and love with all

of their heart and soul no matter where a person comes

from or what choices they have made in their life. I want

to do what Christ instructed us to do and that is to Love

thy Neighbor as you would yourself and to Love God with

all your Heart and Soul...

CONFIRMATION

NOV. 6-8- CONFIRMATION MISSION TRIP TO

CHICAGO. We have to be in Chicago at 5:15pm. It’s a 2-hour trip on

a good day, which means leaving at 3 from the church.

Needed: Sleeping bag, basic toiletries (probably no

shower Fri or Sat), $25 lunch money, 1 set work clothes, 1

set decent clothes: NO HATS; NO LOGOS OR PICTURES

ON THE SHIRTS; GANGS TEND TO RESPOND TO THOSE

THINGS! Also, bring a warm coat/gloves: we’ll be outside

on the streets for several hours, and it can get COLD!

NOV. 14, 12-3- CONFIRMATION FUNDRAISER at the

Kettle Moraine Chili Cook-Off at the Kettle Moraine

High School gym. Confirmands have to be there from 12-3pm to set up; Food is served to the public from 1-

3pm. LOOK FOR OUR YOUTHS! They’ll be the ones selling

hotdogs to make your chili dogs with!

ADULTS

Jesus is called the Son of God… but so was Caesar. Before Jesus ever started His ministry, the Roman

Emperors were called “The Savior of the World,” “The Son

of God,” and “The Prince of Peace,” but their idea of

how peace would be achieved was by conquering the

world. When Jesus comes on the scene, these imperial

titles are taken over by Him. Why? What does it mean

when the titles of the Roman Imperial Theology are taken

from Caesar and given to Jesus? Come to this

fascinating study! No Bible background necessary. Adult

Bible Study meets every Tuesday from 9:30-10:30am in the Community Room.

about how the process works, you can ride along with an

experienced driver to learn the ropes. For more

information, speak to Donna Newland, 262-965-4022 or

[email protected].

PRECIOUS METALS RECYCLING

Please continue to drop off your aluminum

cans and other precious metals in front of

the garage (bag cans please). Money

received from this recycling program

benefits our bottom line!

You’ve just received a

random act of kindness

go ahead and

PAY IT FORWARD! www.seeyouonsunday.org

Don’t forget to pick up a few cards from the gathering

area so that you may do a good deed and spread God’s

love throughout the week!

We all need a helping hand at some point…

It’s no secret that Emmanuel is full of compassionate,

caring people who are willing to lend a hand, so keep

that in mind if a need arises in your life or in the life of

someone you know in the community.

A few examples of how our people have leant a hand….

providing transportation to medical appointments

meal or housekeeping assistance while recovering

from a medical situation

providing seasonal help in your home, like window

washing

clean up in response to a natural or other kind of

disaster (flooding, etc.)

grocery shopping

house cleaning and organizing after a disaster or in

preparation for the sale of your home

When we become aware of a need, we send out a mass

email or make calls asking for volunteers to help.

We can’t help if we are not aware of the need, so PLEASE keep this in mind. Don’t let

your pride get in the way of asking…we all

need a helping hand from time to time.

Call Pastor Nansi at 262-965-2429 or Donna

at 262-965-4022.

Collection Drawers. . .

The kiosk of drawers in the foyer is for the ongoing

collections of different purposes…

Sentry Food Store Receipts: Golf Road, Delafield Store

ONLY. Place your receipts in the drawer marked for this

purpose- Judy Stanek sends them in and we get a

rebate check from Sentry.

Lake Area Free Clinic Donations: to collect factory-

sealed small containers of over-the-counter meds

and vitamins for the clinic to hand out to clients. A list

of suggested items is on the basket. Not needed:

empty prescription bottles.

Ink Cartridge Recycling: Don’t put your used ink

cartridges in the landfills- turn them into $$ for the

schools. Used cartridges are collected and given to

the Dousman schools.

Campbell’s Soup Labels: another program to benefit

the schools- bring in labels from Campbell’s soup

products and place them in the basket.

Used eye glasses: put your old prescription glasses in

the white bucket on the floor in the foyer. Your

donations will go to the Dousman Lion’s Club for

distribution to those in need.

Food Pantry Collection Box: each first Sunday of the

month is designated for you to bring non-perishable

items for the Kettle Moraine Food Pantry

At Moon Beach and Pilgrim Center it’s been a fun

summer filled with camp fires, ‘s’mores, songs, and

amazing ministry.

The recently completed slate of camps and retreats were

a huge success any way you measure it:

Pilgrim Center and Moon Beach both

experienced increases in camper days.

The evaluations tell us that our campers felt

welcomed and safe.

The stories of God’s love are plentiful and

heartfelt! And…

Camp AweSum finished a successful 11 year of

serving children and families th affected by

Autism

Spectrum Disorders and seven WCUCC churches helped

by volunteering!

Our churches and members clearly believe in the

importance of our ministry which is evident through your

camp participation and through your generous gifts. It’s

not too late to pledge your support for this important

Campaign.
