Chesser Chat - Sam Chesser

I am writing this the morning after we had a chance to hear Mercy Gonzalez Barnes speak about her ministry in theCaribbean. What a blessing that was! We have been supporting Mercy as a missionary for years, and now I look forwardto supporting her as she moves into a new phase in her ministry. For those who were not able to join in Mercy’s presen-tation, there’s one thing she encouraged us to do, regardless of whether we are able to support her financially or not: prayfor her. Please pray for Mercy, as well as the entire American Baptist missionary family. In fact, here are some of ourinternational ministry workers you can pray for. Try saying a prayer for each of them this month.

-Emerson and Ivy Wu-Kit Ripley-JD and Rhonda Reed-Kihomi Ngwemi and Nzunga Mabudiga-Gordon and Lee Ann Hwang

In addition to praying about these people, you can also choose to give to these missionaries financially through the websitewww.internationalministries.org. This website is more than just an opportunity for these missionaries to get their fundingtogether. It is an opportunity to read the stories of these incredible men and women. Many of these people chose toforsake their homes and all the comforts offered to them in order to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“ Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, theyworshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been givento me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of theHoly Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very endof the age.”

Those words are of course the final words of the Gospel of Matthew, the final words of Jesus Christ before leaving hisdisciples. Many of us have heard these words repeated numerous times in our church lives, but how many of us havechosen to live those words out to their fullest meaning? “Make disciples of all nations.” This is a daunting task, but onewhich our missionaries take very seriously.

It should be noted that they especially take it seriously to make disciples. These are not people who come in, preach theword and leave. These are people who stay in community with the local people for years at a time, eating with them, talkingwith them, sharing their hopes and joys as well as their disappointments and sorrows. Making true disciples of Jesus Christis not a one-day activity. It is a long, difficult process, but one which is rewarding not only for the new disciple, not only forthe missionary, but for the whole Christian family.

It is our duty as American Baptists to support our overseas missionaries. I encourage you to consider giving financially, butwhether you can or cannot, please pray for these brave men and women who are honoring the gospel call.

On October 29th, we had a wonderful visit from Mercy Gonzalez Barnes, a missionary

we have supported for many years. For 13 years, Mercy has served as a teacher in

Mexicali, Mexico, working at the Christian Seminary there. This year, she has been

called to new ministry. She will be teaching intensive courses in different seminaries

throughout the Caribbean, including Cuba. Please pray for Mercy in the next stage of her

ministry!
