By now you all know we’re obsessed with Fashion and Food, and our spotlight this month is on a young designer from the KZN Fashion Council, Nabeela Osman of the Uniform Apparel label. She appeared for the first time at SA Fashion Week, showing her Autumn/winter collection in the Buyer’s Lounge and we got a chance to chat to her about all things fashionable.Our food journey took us from Cape Town and Chef Jeremey Vermaak to Belgium, Burundi and eventually Johannesburg with Chef Coco Reinharz. These two exceptional culinary artists share their stories and recipes with us.

She’s young, beautiful and

talented. She’s been entertained by ex Presidents and enjoyed the

company of some famous Hollywood celebrities, Sheena Geness, mother, wife,

doctor, philanthropist and businesswoman is the epitome of what

the term ‘beauty and brains’ actually means.

Her training years saw Sheena spend much of her time in the ICU department of the Helen Joseph Hospital with the intention of completing her specialisation. But as with so many of us, life always has other plans. Sheena who had been married by now to Sunil, welcomed her first daughter Riaska into the world and as we know motherhood changes everything. Four years later another daughter, Priyanka was to complete the family.

In addition to being a committed doctor and mother, Sheena is also an astute businesswoman who together with her husband, Sunil, own a consulting company, Geness Consulting, a BEE company catering to event management, media, marketing and printing needs.

One would think that the young doctor would have her hands full juggling these commitments, but Sheena always makes time for the one thing that's close to her heart. Her philanthropy work.

The Geness Foundation was started by Sheena and Sunil as a vehicle for them to be able to give back and since the formation of the foundation they have been involved with various projects around the country, such as:

A school feeding scheme that provides a daily meal to impoverished children. which resulted in an invitation from the founder of the Lunchbox Fund , to New York City last year to meet other board members like Joaquin Phoenix, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Liv Tyler!

50 Shades of Black. Young up and coming fashion designers had a chance to showcase their wares in a bid to support entrepreneurship. The entire event was sponsored by the Geness Foundation in addition to giving a cash donation to the Blind & Deaf Society .

Born in Durban to a humble family Sheena spent her teen years working as a professional model, using the money she earned to save up for her dream career of being a doctor. Passing Matric with full distinctions she was accepted into Wits University Medical school with a bursary and a scholarship. At present in addition to her busy practice in the CBD of Johannesburg, Sheena teaches fifth and final year medical students in the family health medicine department of the university.

Sunil is the Chairperson and gives up his time and goodwill in supporting science and promoting fundraising for the longevity of the centre. This is an excellent example of the couple's dedication to education, and providing young African children with the opportunities of pursuing a career in science and technology.

It must be noted at this point that the Geness Foundation is wholly funded by Sheena and Sunil. The foundation has 2 other board members, Mr Trevor James and Mr Dinesh Naran whose support comes by the way of expertise in their relevant fields and logistical support.

There are many other projects planned like: 50 shades of pink fashion show in aid of CANSA, support of Food for Life feeding scheme, support of HIV Orphans, providing an education bursary for underprivileged students, building Biodiversity centres across the country and many others. The hope is to coax the private sector with their impending CSRprojects to support future initiatives.

The beautiful mother of two has also always had a great love affair with fashion and the fashion industry, not surprising since she had been exposed to that world back in her modelling days. When I first met Sheena I must admit that she was totally unlike anything I had expected. With all of her achievements one would think there would be some element of arrogance or ego, there was absolutely none. Sheena is down to earth, approachable and in all honesty one of the nicest people I have met in a long time.

At just 24 years old Nabeela Osman is ready to take the fashion world by storm. With her first showing at SA Fashion Week 2014 Autumn/Winter collection this young designer has captured the imagination of the

‘trendsetters’. Fashion is definitely in her genes as her grandmother was a fashion designer and her mother

before her a seamstress. Nabeela’s own mom, Nazira, a businesswoman also dabbled a bit in the industry before

moving on to other ventures. Nabeela finished high school at Durban Girls College in 2008 and then began

the pursuit of her dreams at D.U.T, studying Fashion and Textiles and graduated in 2011.

We managed to get a few minutes with the young designer and chatted to her about design, her love affair with fashion and of course her personal style.

1. What inspiRes you?I take inpiration from pretty much anything. It could be from my surroundings or what is happening in fashion at the moment.

Without a doubt, this moment. Being selected to take part in SA Fashion Week is the highlight of my entire year!

My family is so supportive when it comes to my career. My Mum and Gran have been there for me every step of the way. So blessed!

My first job in the industry was a Junior CAD designer. I enjoyed it. I Tried to learn everything I could. That job really taught me a lot about myself and inspired me to start my own brand.

Gone are the days when the mere mention of the word would bring you disgusted looks and turned noses, now this natural

wonder is the newest hit on the radar of all health fanatics. But don't get too excited, as this oil is made from industrial hemp, although it is in the same cannabis genus as marijuana, this

family member has minimal traces of any psychoactivesubstance, which makes it perfect for the whole family to enjoy.

By cold pressing the seeds(producing the best oil), the oil is produced into an unrefined state which has a high concentration of essential fatty acids and protein. The oil that you get will have a rich, nutty flavour and will have a green tint.

Once you have purchased yourself some of this glorious liquid, remember the shelf life is not great so make sure you use it before it becomes rancid.

Now to start getting use out of your oil, you can do one of two steps:

First, in the kitchen, don't try and heat the oil as its not suitable for high heat, but perfect to use on a salad, or even a table spoon in a smoothie.

Secondly you can use the oil as a moisturising agent and apply to your body after a bath.

DIVE THE SEAS

Everyone has a fear of something, for some its heights, others its clowns. My fear however is Sharks; this fear is so bad that I rarely go into the water. I decided it was time I faced my fears and went diving. Two things happened, firstly, I didn't get eaten, and secondly I realized that there is a whole world to explore

beneath the waves with infinite beauty and floating creatures that leave you in awe of nature.

There are two main forms ofdiving for leisure; these are namely scuba diving and snorkeling.

We will begin with the latter, which is often enjoyed while on vacation at a tropical resort or any location.

snorKeLingThe basics of this style is to put on some fins to help propel you through the water, a pair of goggles for clarity and a snorkel which pops up just above the water to allow you to breathe as you effortlessly float along and experience the underwater attractions for long periods of time without having to come up for air. most snorkelers prefer calm water locations with warm water and sites that contain reefs, a wreck or any submerged objects.

scuba diving Now for the braver more advanced divers out there, we get on to Scuba Diving. For this style you will need some training, scuba tanks, fins, wetsuit and goggles and even a spear gun (if you into that kind of thing).

DIVE THE SEAS

Scuba diving may be performed for a number of reasons, both personal and professional. Recreational diving is performed purely for enjoyment and has a number of distinct technical disciplines to increase interest underwater, such as cave diving, wreck diving, ice diving and deep diving depending on your skill and whether or not you are diving for leisure or for more serious reasons.

By carrying the tanks on your back, this style allows mobility and freedom to explore anywhere underwater from 1m deep to usually 30-40m (depending on your skill level). This style opens you up for a wider range of experiences as well as seeing larger species that live in deep water. always make sure you are with a friend, as getting lost can happen and is definitely not on most people's bucket list.

So whether you are a holiday diver or going to explore the bottom of the ocean, diving is the perfect way to get away from the hustle of everyday life, detach from the world and experience the wonders of the ocean. No matter where you go, a dive spot is sure to provide you with incredible photos (if you have an underwater camera or go pro) and a phenomenal leisure experience.

The bendsAlso known as decompression sickness (DCS occurs in scuba divers when dissolved gases (mainly nitrogen) come out of solution in bubbles and can affect just about any part of the body including joints, lung, heart, skin and brain. If a diver surfaces too fast, the excess nitrogen will come out rapidly as gas bubbles. Depending on which organs are involved, these bubbles produce the symptoms of decompression sickness.

Some of the problems caused by DCS are local joint pain, arm & leg symptoms, dizziness, paralysis, extreme fatique, unconsciousness and shortness of breath. There are guides available with a table of depth and time taken to surface in order to not get DCS.

“We therefore wanted to develop a concept whereby we could promote

art to the public in various available spaces, in and around our winery and delicatessen. We also felt art was a means to satisfy the sense of sight, which in turn would complement the other senses one could stimulate at TOKARA through our wines,

olive oils and cuisine.”

Forty-five students from the Marié Stander School of Art literally transform wine into art when they dip their paintbrushes in 2011 TOKARA Shiraz, to visually portray their interpretations of this year's relevant theme:

“2014 World Design Capital – Cape Town”. (The World Design Capital title is awarded every second year to those cities that recognise design as a tool for social, cultural and economic development).

Marié Stander, who is herself a practicing artist, encourages her students to work in a variety of mediums, from oil and ink to charcoal and pencil. So painting with wine was a welcome challenge.

“I'm very involved with the creation process. Whenever we start a new brief I show them different examples and ideas – to get the inspirational juices flowing,” she says.


The school has been involved with “Wine Made Art” for the past four years and over time they have perfected the method of preparing the wine for use as an art medium. Stander says that geTTing The rich burgundy colour you See in A glASS of ShirAz To TrAnSlATe To The SurfAce being pAinTed on iS Tricky, because if used as it is, the wine becomes a lilac grey colour.

“It's very pale, but you can't reduce it too much because it becomes too syrupy.” So after much experimentation they came up with using an old

boiling a wine reduction with a rusty nail and a white Protea leaf, creating the rich colour seen in this year's art.

Stander discourages her students from using found objects or photographs taken by other people, so this project saw the Stellenbosch-based students venturing out onto the streets of Cape Town to find their inspiration. She is very impressed with the concepts and quality of the works chosen for this year's exhibition.

Mark Lester, Marketing Manager at TOKARA, is also impressed:

“The quality once again was truly magnificent.”

The theme was relatively broad, some artists interpreted it literally and others less so. The visuals therefore touch on a variety of subjects ranging from historic, to modern, to everyday scenes of Cape Town, to cultural scenes. The works capture a very diverse city, which Cape Town has truly come to represent.”

Twenty selected artworks from this year's “Wine Made Art” project will be displayed in the on-site gallery

from September 11th until end January 2015 for all public to view.

I have many vices! Most of which I completely revel in & absolutely make no excuses for. the one that I adore is, The High Tea. I love High Teas - preferably with champagne. And I mean the real thing!

High Teas I've had a-plenty, from Durban to London to Hong Kong & Cape Town, one of my most favourite being the Pret-a-Port Tea at THE BERKELEY HOTEL IN SLOANE SQUARE. An auspicious affair with petit fours made to a perfect replica of the most outstanding of outfits or accessories from the Annual London Fashion Week. Down to minute detail! In my book, nothing beats the age old refinement and ritual of a contented and sophisticated High Tea. Of course the champagne is served in crystal – Dahling. Nothing but the best for the London Elite.

High Tea is traditionally Afternoon Tea with finely cut cucumber sandwiches, crumbly scones, delectable cakes and of course, a selection of exotic teas to choose from. For me it's coffee all the way, much to the horror of the terribly proper serving staff. Oh well, always does well to stir things up a bit. Wobble that stiff upper lip a bit.

Afternoon Tea as it was back in the day, was the preserve of the rich as means of a “snack” served at 4pm to tide them over until dinner was served at 8pm.

however, in africa, as is our way, we do things differently. We have High Tea for breakfast as well as Afternoon Tea. That's how we roll! We are the bottom of Africa, after all, and to us goes the glory of changing traditions to suit ourselves!

And so it was with great excitement that I tottled off to my 5TH ANNUAL MUMS MAIL SUNFLOWER HIGH TEA! A most sought after occasion and certainly the event of the year for some Ladies! Blimey, These elusive tickets sell out within an hour of going on sale!!

Green Goddess High Tea


By now you know, I love a good High Tea and of course, short of waiting around an entire year for the next one, there is only one other in Durban to fulfil that salacious need in me – THE OYSTER BOX.

A wondrous occasion with a view of the ocean to boot. The selection is so vast that it takes you a good couple of hours to get through it. Situated in the central Palm Court with the high ceilings and slow fans you would be forgiven for thinking that you were somehow transported back in time. The perfect occasion to take your time and enjoy a relaxed afternoon with your girls. (Just don't let the hubby know how much you spent)Or you can take him with but men don't seem to be all that appreciative of the sublime, indulgent experience that is, THE HIGH TEA. Of course, if you are not a tea drinker there is nothing wrong with ordering coffee from the range on offer.

i know my little latte-lovers, high tea's are decadent, indulgent and completely selfish... but then so is golf. Go ahead, indulge yourself, a little high tea goes a long way in soothing the decadent soul.

The attention to detail & opportunity to dress to the max is evident everywhere! One can only admire these fabulous divas for their wonderful outfits and determination to represent the theme and out-do each other!

This year's theme was GREEN GODDESS, requiring ladies to either wear green or “go green” no, not with envy, but rather with a fabulous outfit strung together by means of recycled product. Well, the ladies certainly outdid themselves with the most exquisite outfits made from everything from Omo boxes to a dress made wholly out of newspaper.

This High Tea is certainly one to pencil in on your next years calendar and as it only comes around once a year, I have to toddle along to other deliciously decadent venues to get occasional fix.

Coco's grandmother Antoinette was a Burundian princess who captured the heart of a Belgian coffee plantation owner and hotelier when she made baguette. When she introduced him to African culinary classics such as Poulet Moambe and liboke de poisson Monsieur Reinarhz was so entranced that he married her. Their daughter, Marie, became a chef. She trained at the family Hotel Central in Bujumbura and later became the Chef Patronne of Pili Pili, once the most fashionable restaurant in Kinshasa. Pili Pili played host to numerous celebrities royalty, diplomats and politicians.

Coco attended the Ecole Hotelière de Namur in Belgium but his heart was inAfrica. He returned to Kinshasa to take control of his mother's business interests upon her death.

In 1998, the DRC civil war made life impossible for those with Tutsi origins so Coco left Kinshasa for Brussels. A fan from his Pili Pili days invited him to become the Head chef at and duty manager at Hotel Le Marly in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. In the Ivory Coast he developed a life-long passion for West African seafood cuisine. Political turmoil in the Ivory Coast caused Coco and his family to flee to Belgium where he became the Head Chef at Château de Sombreffe, outside Brussels.

Chef Coco Reinarhz is at the forefront of the modern African food movement. Coco is the Chef Patron of Sel et Poivre and Le Petit Sel restaurant in Sandton, Gauteng. He recently bought the restaurant in the Cradle of humankind Nature reserve and added a new restaurant called Le Sel @ the Cradle
