South Dakota FocusRoadways Thursday, Oct. 31, 8pm (7 MT)Housing Thursday, Nov. 21, 8pm (7 MT)SDPB.org/Infrastructure

South Dakota Focus reviews the needs for South Dakota’s infrastructure with a look at roadways on SDPB1 Television on Thursday, Oct. 31, at 8pm (7 MT); and housing on the reservations on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 8pm (7 MT).

The first program takes a close look at the roadways, the need for upgrades and funding challenges. The second program looks at the lack of housing as well as water issues faced by reservation residents in South Dakota.

In September, Focus examined the plight of bedroom communities, which face the dilemma of providing services when population is growing, but the business

community – and sales taxes – are not. SDPB Radio looked at agriculture and education issues in October and will address transportation and housing in November.

Tune in, and follow the four-month series on infrastructure, which continues into December, or check out the reports at SDPB.org/Infrastructure.

SDPB1: Thursday, Nov. 7, 8pm (7 MT) Sunday, Nov. 10, 1pm (Noon MT)SDPB.org/DakotaLife

We’re running, biking and swimming in November for Dakota Life. The SDPB Television features magazine looks at athletic events in Pierre and the Black Hills.

Dakota Life travels across the state to find interesting people and places. It airs several times during the month and will be available for on-demand viewing at SDPB.org/DakotaLife.

November includes:• Mickelson Trail Marathon –

Hundreds of runners annually put in 26.2 miles of hard work for a marathon with scenery that’s hard to match.

• Mickelson Trail Trek – Bicycle riders enjoy the beauty of the Black Hills along the Mickelson Trail, through scenic valleys, old railroad tunnels, and historic mining towns.

• Mickelson Trail History – The 109-

mile George S. Mickelson Trail travels across the Black Hills, from Edgemont to Deadwood. How did this incredible recreational resource come to be?

• Riverman/Riverwoman Triathlon – Athletes gathered near Pierre to swim .4 mile, bike 18 miles and run 3.5 miles. The traditional sprint triathlon competition took place earlier this year on Farm Island.

Senator John F. Kennedy in Boston in 1957.

Fifty years ago, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The event on Nov. 22, 1963, traumatized the nation and marked one of the first news events covered almost non-stop on television. The 35th president’s death also spawned speculation and conspiracy theories. SDPB Television marks the milestone with four key programs.

American Experience JFKSDPB1: Monday & Tuesday Nov. 11-12, 8pm (7 MT)SDPB2: Sunday & Monday Nov. 17-18, 6 & 11pm (5 & 10 MT)

American Experience JFK looks at the man and his unfulfilled promise. The two-part, four-hour program goes to Kennedy family members and historians to examine his childhood years, early political career, terms in the House and the Senate, and the presidential campaign that made him the youngest elected president in U.S. history.

NOVA Cold Case JFKSDPB1: Wednesday, Nov. 13, 8pm (7 MT)SDPB2: Tuesday, Nov. 19 6 & 11pm (5 & 10 MT)

NOVA takes us into the world of conspiracy theory and applies modern science to the assassination. Cold Case JFK will look at how state-of-the art forensic tools would be applied to the investigation were it to happen today. At the same time, NOVA takes a critical look at contemporary cases, like the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, to reveal how charges of evidence mishandling and human error can mar even scientifically sophisticated detective work. Will forensics ever be truly foolproof, or does modern technology just give a scientific sheen to a practice that will always be more art than science?

Frontline Who Was Lee Harvey Oswald?SDPB1: Tuesday, Nov. 19, 9pm (8 MT)SDPB2: Wednesday, Nov. 20 7pm & Midnight (6 & 11 MT)

At the heart of the assassination lies the puzzle of Lee Harvey Oswald: Was he the emotionally disturbed lone gunman of the 1964 Warren Commission report? Was he, as the House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded, probably part of a conspiracy on that day in Dallas? Or was he an unwitting fall guy, the patsy, as Oswald himself claimed when he was arrested on November 22, 1963?

Secrets of the Dead JFK: One PM Central Standard TimeSDPB1: Wednesday, Nov. 13, 9pm (8 MT)SDPB2: Wednesday, Nov. 20 6 & 11 MT (5 & 10 MT)

Secrets of the Dead chronicles minute-by-minute the assassination as it was revealed in the CBS newsroom from the moment the President was shot until Walter Cronkite’s emotional pronouncement of his death, one hour and eight minutes later. Included in the program will be moving memories from men and women who were with there on the day – in Dallas and New York.

Thank You, Listeners, for Supporting SDPB RadioSDPB Radio listeners came through during

SDPB Radio’s Membership Week in October and helped support network programming. Thank You.

The drive included a This American Life Marathon that promoted special ticket offers for the Ira Glass appearance coming up next April.

One of the most popular features was the Car Talk Marathon that closed the Fall Drive.

SDPB Radio programming costs more than $250,000 each year and that programming is

paid for by the generous gifts of listeners throughout the state of South Dakota.

You can still make a contribution. Call 800-333-0789 or go to the web at SDPB.org. The “Donate” button is on the top right.

Our Friends AbroadSeveral Friends of SDPB traveled to Ireland in August for a tour throughout the country. The highlight was a concert featuring superstar Daniel O’Donnell. The group posed for a photo with O’Donnell at the Lyrate Estate Hotel in Kilkenny, Ireland. They include: top, from left, Pam Pfeifer, Carol Pitts, Wes & Sylvia Stern, Gayle Grothe, Janet Brubakken, Bonnie & Ed Morgan, Janet & Larry Gerjets, Melinda Muhmel, Sally Damm; front from left: Shirley Sackman, Carol Gossman, Ruth Schmidt, Daniel O’Donnell, Delores Kruger, Reba Jonas and Judith Williams.

End the Year with a Tax-Deductible GiftSDPB.org/Friends

It’s November and time to think about – taxes.

Now is the time to make the contributions that will help Friends of SDPB and help reduce your taxes. If you itemize on your federal income tax, don’t forget to add in your contributions to the Friends of South Dakota Public Broadcasting.

No matter how much you give a year, be it $40 or $1,000, you can add it in when you itemize. The only limit is that your charitable contributions cannot exceed 50 percent (half) of your adjusted gross income. For details on charitable gifts, call Friends of SDPB at 800-333-0789 or got to SDPB.org/Friends.

There are plenty of ways to make an end-of-the-year contribution. Here are a few.

Check or money order.Stock. Did you know that Uncle Sam

takes a share when you sell stock? If the value has increased substantially and you’ve had the stock for more than a year, you would end up paying capital gains taxes when you sell. Sell it yourself, and you’ll still have to pay the tax, even if you give the proceeds away. But if you give the stock itself to the Friends of SDPB, for example, you can claim a charitable deduction for

the full value of the stock at the time of donation and avoid capital gains taxes, too. Conversely, if you’ve made capital gains and you still have a stock that’s lost value, sell that stock, use it to help offset your capital gains, and give the proceeds to Friends for a charitable deduction. It’s a way to get a double dividend, so to speak.

Retirement accounts. If you set up your will so that the remainder of IRAs or other retirement accounts goes to a charitable donation, your heirs won’t have to worry about the taxes that would have applied to those accounts.

Donate your car or another vehicle. A 5- to 10-year-old vehicle can support many hours of public broadcasting. A newer vehicle will do even more. Just remember, the tax deduction is based on the amount the vehicle brings in, not on Blue Book value.
