CITY NEWS

According to the Mayo Clinic -Here’s a look at some of the diseases and conditions that may be linked to oral health:

• Cardiovascular disease. Research shows that several types of cardiovascular disease may be linked to oral health. These include heart disease, clogged arteries, stroke and bacterial endocarditis. Some researchers believe that bacteria from gum disease can enter your bloodstream and travel through your arteries to your heart, effecting your cardiovascular system. Although periodontal disease seems to be associated with heart disease, more studies are needed before the link can be confirmed with certainty.• Pregnancy and birth. Gum disease has been linked to premature birth. Some research has shown that disease-causing organisms in a pregant woman’s mouth can wind up in the placenta or amniotic fluid, possibly causing premature birth. Unfortunately, treating periodontal dis-ease during pregnancy may be too late, because the infection may have already spread in the woman’s body. This is why it’s vital to maintain excellent oral health before you get pregnant.• Diabetes. Diabetes increases your risk of gum disease, cavities, tooth loss, dry mouth, and a variety of oral infections. Conversly, poor oral health can make your diabetes more difficult to control. Infections may cause your blood sugar to rise and require more insulin to keep it under control.• HIV/AIDS. In some cases, one of the first signs of AIDS may appear in your mouth, with several gum infections. You may also develop persistent white spots or unusual lesions on your tongue or in your mouth.• Osteoporosis. The first stages of bone loss worsens from year to year, your den-tist may be able to spot this on routine dental X-rays. If bone loss worsens from year to year, your dentist can suggest that you discuss the issue with your other health care providers.• Other conditions. Many other con-ditions may make their presence known in your mouth before you know any-thing’s wrong. These may include Sjogren’s syndrome, certain cancers, eat-ing disorders, syphillis, gonorrhea and substance abuse.

So you can see how very important regular dental visits are and how avoiding the dentist can have severely adverse

Oral Health Can Have Dramatic Effects On Your Overall Health

effects on your overall health. The truth is that the bacteria in the mouth replicate and double every 30 days reaching destructive levels in just 90 days-so peo-ple with gum disease can have bone loss in as little as 3 months! Research keeps finding new links between oral health and the health of your body every day. The lat-est study was done on pancreatic cancer. Here’s what they found:

The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute found that periodontal disease was asso-ciated with an increased risk of cancer of the pancreas. The study appeared in the January 17, 2007 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Data for the new study came from the Health Professional’s Follow-Up Study, which began in 1986 and includes 51,529 U.S. men working in the health profes-sions. Participants respond to question-nares about their health every two years. After analyzing the data, the researchers confirmed 216 cases of pancreatic cancer between 1986 and 2002; of those 67 reported periodontal disease.

The results showed that, after adjust-ing for a smoking, diabetes, body mass index and a number of other factors, men with periodontal disease had a 63% high risk or developing pancreatic cancer com-pared to those reporting no periodontal disease. “Most convincing was our finding that never-smokers had a two-fold increase in risk of pancreatic cancer,” said Michaud.

So that’s the latest information about your mouth!! I know time slips by and seeking a dentist often gets put off until there is a problem or pain. I just wanted to let you know - we understand and don’t lecture our patients about having not been in for so long. The key thing is to take care of any problems, create a great re-care system for you and make sure you keep your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime which will in turn keep your whole body healthier!!

CITY NEWS

Oh, wait a minute. We don’t have but-tons in South Florida. That’s because we don’t even have a machine with buttons. Instead, we have an infinitely long 11-page ballot laced with confusing ques-tions with double negatives, a black pen and the world’s longest line. Each page is fed into a scanner as the snails aka voters wait in line, winding around city hall all the way to Mars.

Voting in Florida is absolutely ridicu-lous. Florida should take lessons from some sophisticated state that has voting down pat, like….Louisiana. I am origi-nally from New Orleans and even Louisiana, long chided for digging up dead people to vote, has a damn machine to vote on that works, is reliable, and a line to stand in that is fathomable. A line that is short enough that you could con-ceive of getting through it to vote before

you died of old age.Florida is supposed to be progressive.

Florida has Disney World and Epcot. Florida launches the space shuttle. Can’t this state get a voting system that works? One that doesn’t inconvenience the rest of the country waiting for our results? What’s it going to take?

I write this column two days after the election and our state is still yellow and undecided on all the national maps. One day, when we turn on CNN or Fox, let Florida be red or blue, not yellow and still undecided. Please.

You would think that after the 2000 election and the stupid hanging chads that our state would get with the program 12 years later. This is not rocket science. This is the new millennium and this non-sense of voting in South Florida is unac-ceptable.

I remember voting at the fire station

on Aventura Blvd. in November, 2000. The line was not nearly as long, but it was completely disorganized with people screaming in every language with poll vol-unteers who must have had a minimum age of 85 in order to be hired. You got the feeling it was going to be a mess but no one would have predicted that Florida would take a month to figure out if George W. Bush really beat Al Gore. Or not.

If you turned out to vote on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 and succeeded, you should win some award for patience and determination. I got to City Hall at 7:05 AM on Election Day and left 2 hours and 20 minutes later. A riot nearly broke out as neighbors came to say HI to me in line at about 8:30. They hoped to blend into the line that had been assembled for well over an hour at precinct 109. Can you guess how it ended for them?

You stood in line for so long to vote in Aventura that you began to bond with the people next to you, like lonely survivors of the Apocalypse suddenly bound together to determine their fate in an uncertain world never before encountered. One woman I met said she brought her hus-band, a wheelchair bound person, for early voting. He was allowed to wait in the beginning of the line, but as his escort, she was told to wait separately at the end

of the line to vote and couldn’t vote with him that day. That’s why she was back on Election Day.

My wait from 7:05 to 9:20 AM was short compared to those who voted early. Some waited over seven hours in early voting. So what’s the point of voting early if you wait for seven hours in line? Who can deal with that?

To vote in Aventura or anywhere in Miami-Dade County, you need more than a picture ID and a voter registration card. You need provisions to go camping: food, water, a bathroom, a blanket, beef jerky, candy, something. Your world needs to stop turning while you vote and your fam-ily or coworkers wait.

Can we have a relief concert or some-one strumming a banjo or a washboard to entertain us while we wait to cast votes for president that may never be counted? Can we bring bourbon or a bottle of wine in the voting line next time? Because I’m gonna pop my cork if I ever again wait in line for hours only to see some miserable 11-page ballot and a black pen.

You know what? I’m ready to vote again. I’m ready to vote for someone who can make voting in Florida a modern process that takes 30 minutes, an hour tops, and then counts the votes quickly and accurately, while a banjo plays.

FRUITFLOWERSContinued From Pg 1Fruits and veggies have a lot to bring to the table, both literally and figuratively. They are packed with the vitamins and minerals which our bodies need in order to perform optimally.

Our arrangements are all vegetarian including many choices that are also vegan, kosher and gluten-free—making them perfect for those with spe-cific dietary restrictions. Our produce is low in sodium—which is great for those trying to watch their blood pressure. For individuals worried about weight, vegetables and many fruits are high in taste and low in calories, making them an ideal snack. Additionally, since fruits are full of fiber (which makes you feel full) so you eat less.

Fruits are a great source of H2O—since most are made up of over 50% water they allow us to combat dehydration!  Because they have natural sugars while also being low on the glycemic index, fruits provide a fantastic

supply of long-lasting energy. If these reasons weren’t enough, fruits and veggies are also deli-cious and contribute to height-ened sense of mood and well-being. How much do we Cost:

From a box of half-a-dozen dipped strawberries to our most magnificent banquet-sized bou-quet, we have products for every budget. If you require more information, our fruit-experts would be happy to assess what size arrangement would best suit your needs. What Discounts are Available:

We appreciate the readers of the Aventura Digest and, as such, we have included a cou-pon just for you (see coupon). Optimize your Party Needs:

Thanksgiving is a time for us to reflect on the things in life that each of us hold dear, and, to give thanks for those things. It is also a time where many of us gather with loved ones and tra-ditionally eat a heavy meal—loading up on turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing. Show how

much you care by offering those you care about a sweet treat that won’t weigh them down. Not only do our bouquets make beautiful centerpieces, they also double as lovely hostess gifts, and luscious (but, healthy!) des-serts.

Thanksgiving kicks-off the holiday party season—make sure the dessert table at each of your get togethers is outfitted with a delicious bouquet from FruitFlowers. Additionally, we give crudités a whole new look when we deliver it as a bountiful garden of veggies. A Novel Approach to Gift-Giving:

With the holiday season upon us, we all find ourselves search-ing for the perfect presents. Whether it’s something for mom and dad, the kids or close friends, you want to keep the people close to you healthy. The d i f f i c u l t - t o -buy-for person in your life will be thrilled when they receive one of

our arrangements; these memorable gifts truly make an impact on those who receive them. Any bouquet can be put in a holi-day container, if requested. The option of adding chocolate dipped ber-ries to any order, in an arrangement or boxed separately, they are avail-able. What’s New at FruitFlowers:

Fresh for this holiday season, we have many new products to pique your palette. CITY NEWSBRAVERMAN EYE CENTERCONTINUED FROM PAGE 1already see better.”

He easily got used to the monovision aspect. “It wasn’t a big deal,” he says. “My vision with contacts wasn’t exactly the same in both eyes anyway. Your brain adjusts to it.”

Today, Jorge has thrown away both his glasses and his contacts. He can see distance, drive and read without them. “I can do everything, including driving at night,” he says.

Although he recently retired from being a firefighter, Jorge finds many other aspects of life easier without having to deal with glasses or contacts. “I love being able to open my eyes under water, which I couldn’t do with contacts,” he says. “It’s also nice not to have to deal with saline solutions anymore or the potential risk of infection.”

He adds, “It’s pretty amazing. I’m trying to convince my wife that she should do it, too.”What To Expect With Z-lasik Surgery

All Laser Lasik surgery is performed on a patient’s cornea, which provides most of the focusing power when light enters the eye. Topical anesthetic drops are applied to the eye. The surgeon first uses a special Ziemer LDV femtosecond laser to create a thin layer of corneal tissue that can be folded back (a corneal flap). Then, another type of laser (an Allegretto Eye-Q excimer laser) is used to reshape the underlying cornea, painlessly. After the excimer laser treatment, the corneal flap is repositioned and bonds back into place naturally. The corneal reshaping improves the focusing power of the cornea.

Although no one can promise patients “perfect” vision, most Laser Vision Correction patients with mild to moderate prescriptions with or without astigmatism, do achieve 20/20 or better vision.

This means that they no longer need glasses or contacts to drive, play most sports, and watch TV. Also, you can participate in careers requiring good unaided vision, such as policemen or firemen need.About Dr. Stanley Braverman

The idea of Venus Salon and Spa came from Greek mythology. Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of Love was born a grown, young woman when she emerged from a jade-colored shell. Angels from heaven emerged to give her the first spa bath, filed her nails, and sprinkled her face with heavenly rose dew that gave her eternal youth. It was the brushing of her hair to give her a glamorous look that caused jealousy among the other Greek Goddesses. Venus Spa is what transformed Aphrodite to Venus. LIFESTYLESAVENTURA VOTED!Cohen and Weinberg win, Holzberg reelected to city commission

By Lisa Overing - Aventura Digest

The 2012-2013 Aventura City Commission. From left to right: Teri Holzberg, Enbar Cohen, Billy Joel, Mayor Susan Gottlieb, Michael Stern, Luz Urbaez Weinberg, Howard Weinberg.

Nearly 9,000 Aventurans rocked the vote on November 6, brav-ing lines hours long to elect three commissioners to Aventura’s City Commission as Bob Diamond and Zev Auerbach step down after being termed out.

Activist and political science major Enbar Cohen and attorney Howard Weinberg were elected to their first terms, with each earning over 60% of the vote. Commissioner Teri Holzberg was reelected for another term on the com-mission. Holzberg joined the commission five years ago when she assumed her late husband, Harry’s, seat.

For over a year, seven candidates vied for these three commission posi-tions, discussing hot com-munity issues for months, including the need for a charter high school, prop-erty taxes, traffic conges-tion and red light cameras at major intersections.

With her election to the Aventura City Commission at age 24, Ms. Cohen becomes the youngest elected official in the his-tory of Miami-Dade County.

Attributing her success-ful election to hard work, enthusiasm and the power of social media, Cohen thanked her supporters and says she has a new-found appreciation for the political process.

“I come from the resi-dents,” says Cohen. “I have lived here for 12 years and met as many people as I could. I was elected with a real grass roots effort.”

Both Cohen and Weinberg encourage resi-dents to become involved in local programs and to express their voice in the community.

Over 500,000 residents of Miami-Dade County supported the school funding, passing the 1.2 billion bond which was supported by Cohen and Weinberg.

At a recent town hall meeting with the school

superintendent, Weinberg summarized that if the bond was passed, the school overcapacity in Northeast Dade County would be addressed with either a new, public high school near Aventura or an expansion of Dr. Michael Krop High School.

Prior to his election, Weinberg said, “As com-missioner, my duty will be to push the school board to build a new high school as close to Aventura as possible. I will push the school board to use the bond money for a school and my children will attend it.”

In other election news, several amendments to Florida’s State Constitution were on the ballot. Voters said no to amendment 8 for religious freedom, which narrowly lost by 16,000 votes in Miami-Dade County. The public also said no to amendment 6 for public funding for abortions, and no to amendment 10, defeating the personal property tax exemption.

LIFESTYLESHOROSCOPESARIES (March 21 - April 19)

This month will have Mercury in retrograde from early to to 26, but fear not! Although this planet of communi-cation, negotiation, and contractual agreements will be out of phase, you can still make plenty of progress. A light will soon appear at the tunnel, and when you start to see it, it may seem like a miracle. You’ve had to deal with a lot of stress in recent years, dear Aries - more than your share - but life is about to make a decided turn for the better.

TAURUS (April 20- May 20)This month will proceed slowly, but fortunately, as a

Taurus, you have patience and you innately understand the need to be in sync with others. Mercury will be ret-rograde almost the whole month, from November 6 to 26, so you can expect a number of things to go haywire. Don’t even try to rush during the first few days of November to outrun Mercury, as you are already too close to the retrograde as you read your forecast. Slow down, cool your jets - you won’t lose anything by waiting.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 20)As you begin the month, you’ll notice a slow pace.

Mercury, your ruling planet, will go retrograde in Sagittarius (and later move even farther back, into Scorpio) from November 6 to 26. It’s a month to give yourself a little break and work on a more leisurely pace than you have in September and October. You’ve been busy, so use this opportunity to take a deep breath. Although people around you will be as demanding as ever, it’s not a good time to make a big decision or pur-chase anything expensive.

CANCER (June 21 - July 22)November may bring a number of sweet surprises,

especially in the area of romance. This may come as a result of a very encouraging solar new moon eclipse, in the middle of the month. An eclipse series, usually at play for 18 to 24 months, is this month about to shift into a new set of signs, moving gradually away from Gemini-Sagittarius into Scorpio-Taurus, a series we have not seen in nine years.

LEO (July 23- August 22)You have just come though two very strenuous

months, and November brings a slightly slower place. Mercury is about to retrograde from early November to 26 in Sagittarius and your house of true love and social events. You may have to postpone a social event, or change it for later, or you may have a change of heart about someone you are dating. Take your time - this month, there is no rush.

VIRGO (August 23 - September 22)You will be busy this month, and you will crave lots of

intellectual stimulation. It will be there for you, too - reach out and line up activities. Life has been a little too humdrum, and you could use the refreshing change.

Arrange lunches and dinners with friends, go to a museum exhibit, and take in a lecture or a ballet. You will want to travel, too, and you can, but keep in mind that your ruler, Mercury, will be out of phase all month.

LIBRA (September 23 - October 22)You have come though a very strenuous period while

Saturn toured your sign from October 2009 to October 2012. Nothing you will face now will be as difficult as what you have already come through. You should give yourself credit for all you’ve accomplished over the past three years. You are now much stronger than you were three years ago, and much wiser, too.

SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21)It is birthday time for you, dear Scorpio, and all the lit-

tle planets have gathered ‘round to wish you a very happy birthday year ahead. Saturn, the Sun, Mercury, and Venus, plus a dazzling solar eclipse in Scorpio, will each stop by for a piece of cake at some point in the month. Each planet will bring you gifts in the form of opportunities to make a fresh start in your birthday year ahead.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 21)As you begin November, Mars is in your sign, a once in

two-year event that no doubt you have enjoyed since October 8. You still have his favor, energy, courage, and high-level determination until November 16, but now the universe will introduce a little wrinkle - Mercury will be retrograde all month, from early November to 26.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 19)This month will have a slower pace, at least during the

first half, and for that, you will be grateful. Volatile forces involving a home or family matter pressed on you at the monster moon of September 29, increasing the urgency to find solutions or to adjust to rapidly shifting circum-stances. If you are a Capricorn born within five days of December 28, you were in line to feel that moon.

AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18)In November, you have just won the cosmic jackpot,

dear Aquarius. There will be two eclipses, November 13 and November 28, and the first will bring awesome pro-fessional developments, and the other, breathtaking romance. When I began studying your outlook, I was blown away by what I was finding, and how neatly the aspects were interlocking together to boost your pretty aspects even more.

PISCES (February 19 - March 20)You have just come through a very stressful series of

weeks. Shortly after the Sun moved into Libra at the end of September, the Monster Moon of September 29 appeared and brought up unexpected news and tensions. Some Pisces readers said they did NOT notice any stress-ful events at the time of the Monster Moon, especially in regard to money and resources.

HEALTHWondering if you took your pills?Simplified prescription packaging can help

(BPT) - ‘Drugs do not work in patients who do not take them,’ said former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. This simple statement points to one of largest and most serious health problems in the United States. Data suggests that roughly half of the 3 billion pre-scriptions filled each year in America are not taken correctly resulting in increased hospitali-zations and admissions to nurs-ing homes, and billions of dol-lars in avoidable health care costs.

According to experts, the causes of poor medication adherence vary. Some blame it on high out-of-pocket costs for medications; others blame it on concerns over potential side effects. However, all experts

agree that confusion and gen-eral forgetfulness are primary contributors to medications being taken incorrectly.

Ian Salditch, CEO of Medicine-On-Time thinks the solution to adherence comes down to something quite simple - better packaging. ‘In my view, dispensing multiple different medications in a series of very similar little containers is a rec-ipe for mistakes,’ he says. ‘Then we wrap each little container with its own unique set of little printed directions, each with varying dosages and times. It’s no wonder we so often get it wrong.’

There are a variety of solu-tions aimed at improving adher-ence from hi-tech monitoring systems to consumer financial

incentives. Some offer promise. But, Salditch has focused on customized packaging of mul-tiple medications. His company developed a lower-tech com-mon sense approach that offers a smarter way for people to take multiple medications. Using Medicine-On-Time, phar-macists sort and organize medi-cations into personalized pill cups labeled with the day, date and time to take them. Pharmacists provide all the pill cups to the patient organized

into colorful calendar cards. It’s convenient, easy-to-use and, most importantly, proven effec-tive to help people maintain independence and enjoy better health.

In addition to free trials and background information, the company’s website, sortmymeds.com, offers con-sumers the ability to find the closest pharmacy offering the Medicine-On-Time service. There are 250 pharmacies around the country participat-

ing in the program which has been used to fill more than 50 million prescriptions. Additional pharmacies will be added as the program grows in popularity.

‘This website is part of our broader efforts aimed at helping people maintain their inde-pendence and enjoy better health,’ Salditch says. ‘We encourage consumers to ask their pharmacists if they offer Medicine-On-Time, as it will answer the age old question of, ‘Did I take my pills?’’

Demystifying Medicare Part D enrollment(BPT) - With so many options based on where you live

and what prescriptions you need, selecting a Medicare Part D Plan can be complicated and time consuming. However, every American 65 and older or Medicare disabled who wishes to enroll must enroll in a plan for 2013 no later than Dec. 7, 2012.

Alexis Abramson, Ph.D, a gerontologist and leading advocate for health and wellness issues affecting baby boomers and seniors, offers five simple tips to guide you through the process during this year’s registration window.1. Sign up for Medicare Part D - no matter what.

Even if you currently don’t take any prescription medications, you should still consider signing up for a Medicare Part D Plan. If you enroll late or when you are in need of drug coverage, you could pay much higher premiums. The only exceptions to this rule are seniors with equivalent or creditable drug coverage from an employer’s health care plan, retiree health plan or from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.2. You can get Part D two ways, but PDPs are a more affordable option.

Your first option is to buy Part D coverage as part of a private Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) that is based on the drugs you take. Your second option is to sign up for Medicare Advantage, a Medicare HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) that also includes Medicare Part A and Part B (hospital and medical). According to

the Kaiser Family Foundation, a majority of Medicare Part D enrollees opt for private PDPs.-3. Plans change annually so take your time to research.

Assessing all your options isn’t easy. You must weigh short-term savings in monthly premiums against long-term costs from co-payments or limited overall benefits. Consider your developing health concerns and how easily a plan will allow you access to your favorite doctor or specialist and medications you may be taking.4. Preferred pharmacies matter.

Once you’ve found a plan that fits your budget and medication needs, don’t forget about convenience when filling your prescriptions. A pharmacy accepted as ‘preferred’ by a Medicare Part D Plan is a network pharmacy that offers covered drugs to plan members at lower out-of-pocket costs than what the member would pay at a non-preferred network pharmacy. For example, Walmart is a preferred pharmacy on multiple plans including the Humana-Walmart Preferred Rx Plan. People with high blood pressure or who are concerned about heart health also should know that Humana and Walmart just announced that members of the Humana

Walmart-Preferred Rx Plan will have access to 10 hypertension drugs for a penny each when filled at one of the 4,400 Walmart or Sam’s Club pharmacy locations.5. Medicare plan finders are your friend.

There are so many options out there, so it can be hard to keep them all straight. Try one of the simple online search tools that source the most cost-effective plan for you. Walmart.com/RxPlan is easy to use and compares all available plans for you based on your zip code and medications you take.

What’s the key to your child getting a good night’s sleep?(BPT) - As a parent, do you dread the evening hours

because bedtime is such a struggle? Do your children do everything they can to delay turning the lights out? Do they experience fear and anxiety when you leave the room? These all-too-common scenarios play out in countless households every evening, leaving Mom and Dad wondering what they can do to help their kids get the sleep they need without a flood of tears.

Toddlers need an average of 12 to 14 hours of sleep. But, two-thirds of all children younger than 10 experience one or more sleep problems at least three nights a week, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Difficulties range from stalling or resisting going to bed to snoring and sleepwalking. Desperate parents are left frustrated as they simply want their little ones to get the sleep they need.

‘Kids really need to have that sleep in their bodies to have enough energy to make it through the day, think smart thoughts and grow properly,” says Jennifer Waldburger, a family sleep therapist from Sleepy Planet and consultant for The Jim Henson Company’s Pajanimals children’s series, which airs every night on 24-hour preschool television channel Sprout and Saturday mornings on NBC. ‘The idea is to get the child to visualize the process, to understand that it’s normal, healthy and OK to fall asleep.’

Establishing a regular bedtime routine is key, says Waldburger, and anyone putting the child to bed must be on that same schedule.- ‘Stay consistent. Make sure you stick to that routine and schedule,’ stresses Waldburger.

Some simple steps that can be part of a good bedtime routine include:• Quiet, calm play on the floor. Avoid stimulating toys that are noisy or have flashing lights.• Rocking and reading story books. Try making up a story together that feels very calming and relaxing and happy for a child. Sing together or listen to calm music.• Start a favorite ritual, such as saying good night to the stuffed animals or the moon.• Turn on white noise such as a fan.• Offer a transitional object and a brief cuddle before leaving the room.

A transitional object is something your child can use to feel safe and comfort himself - such as a small blanket or stuffed animal - and that reminds him of you. It can be especially useful during times of separation, such as at bedtime.-

To thwart your child’s worries about going to sleep alone, try using a transitional object, such as a small stuffed animal starting around the age of 1. -Recognizable objects can help provide a high level of comfort, although-what the child ends up choosing is up to him or her. For example, a new super-plush line of cuddly stuffed animals based on the beloved characters featured in the Pajanimals show may be the perfect transitional object for your child, helping to make bedtime a calm and comforting experience.

‘It’s in kids’ job description to drag, stall, and delay bedtime as much as they possibly can, play with trains a little longer, basically do anything but actually go to

sleep,’ Waldburger says. ‘Parents need to be sure kids stick to the plan. They can sing a song about brushing their teeth, putting on PJs, or getting a drink of water. Be lighthearted about it, but it is Mom and Dad’s job to keep things on track and get to bed on time.’

Check your local listings for the Pajanimals TV show schedule.

(BPT) - If it seems like you work out regularly only to continue to struggle los-ing weight, you’re not alone. But losing weight in order to improve health may be the wrong approach. First you need to fix what’s holding you back on the inside, so you can see the transformation you want on the outside.

Cliff Edberg cringes every time he hears some-one say: I want to lose weight to get healthy. ‘In my opinion that phrase is backward,’ says Edberg, a registered die-tician, personal trainer, and certified weight loss coach at Life Time Fitness, The Healthy Way of Life Company. ‘People need to get healthy first in order to lose weight. Weight gain or being unhealthy isn’t directly caused by a lack of exercise, it’s a side effect of metabolic dysfunction.’

Generally people refer to having ‘good’ metabolism (someone who burns calories quickly) or ‘bad’ metabolism (a slow caloric burn with leftovers stored in body fat). But metabolism is much more than the rate at which calories are burned. Metabolism is the process of breaking down food into smaller molecules for various uses in the body. Certain foods or ingredients might interfere with a per-son’s metabolism, as can a lack of nutri-ents, high blood sugar or an overabun-dance of stress hormones. This metabolic disruption is often behind a person’s inability to lose weight, even when they are taking steps to eat right and exercise.

Michelle Stork, 43, from Chanhassen, Minn., had resigned herself to creeping weight gain, despite diligently working out for years. ‘As time went on it was eas-ier to gain than lose weight,’ she recalls. ‘Exercise alone wasn’t taking it off.’

She accepted the weight gain as a nor-mal part of getting older, but Edberg, her personal trainer, didn’t. He encouraged her to take a simple blood test to check for underlying metabolic issues. ‘I could see on paper what the problems were and it motivated me to try what my trainer sug-gested,’ Stork says. She slowly added rec-ommended supplements, including vita-min D, probiotics and fish oil, which increased her energy, but didn’t affect her weight. The next step was to change her diet.

‘We discovered a high likelihood that she was sensitive to gluten and dairy,’

How to blast through your weight loss plateau

Edberg says. Unlike an allergy, a sensitiv-ity means the hormones derived from the metabolic process of such foods send confusing messages to the brain, which can cause various symptoms, including weight gain. Within a month of eliminat-ing gluten and dairy from her diet Stork lost more than 10 percent body fat and dropped 12 pounds and two sizes.

‘If someone has a thyroid issue,-nutri-ent deficiency, sex hormone imbalance, etc., they will gain weight,’ Edberg explains. As a certified weight loss coach, he knows that unless the true underlying metabolic issue is addressed-a person will not sustainably lose weight. ‘All the exer-cise in the world will not fix a thyroid issue or nutrient deficiency. In some cases it might make the underlying problem worse.’

This ‘inside out’ approach to personal training is the standard at Life Time Fitness. New members take a comprehen-sive assessment, called myHealthScore, to measure six metabolic markers - choles-terol ratio, triglycerides, blood pressure, body fat ratio, glucose levels and nicotine use - in order to first set goals based on their internal health.

With information from myHealthScore Edberg says he can make precise exercise, nutrition, lifestyle and supplementation recommendations to support each cli-ent’s individual metabolism needs.

Stork is impressed with her results, but the implications go beyond a smaller waist line. Her father suffers from Parkinson’s disease, which looms large in her mind. The steps she is taking now she hopes will prevent a dependence on medication later. ‘I know what may be ahead of me as I get older, and I know I need to start doing things to improve my overall health and fitness to help counter any disease I may develop later in life.’

(BPT) - Our lives are more hectic than ever. In addi-tion to work-ing more than eight hours a day and car-ing for others, the average

person (ages 25 to 54) spends approxi-mately one additional hour per day on household activities, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ American Time Use Survey. With everyday maintenance tasks depleting your free time, you may think it’s impossible to fit in bigger home improvement projects.

It’s time to change your mindset and re-evaluate your home improvement to-do list. While it may seem overwhelming, one weekend is the perfect amount of time to tackle a few cost-effective and eco-friendly home improvement projects that can add style and functionality ... and even save a little ‘green’ as well. The fol-lowing projects will help to ‘greenify’ your home in just 48 hours.Kitchen convenience

Decorative details, such as faucets and fixtures, can go a long way to improve the style of your kitchen, but what about functionality and eco-friendly options?- Wave ‘hello’ to your answer with MotionSense from Moen. Imagine the convenience of having a kitchen faucet that can sense what you’re trying to accomplish, and with a simple wave of the hand, immediately responds to your needs.

MotionSense utilizes advanced sensors to detect a user’s movement in two sens-ing zones, immediately setting water flow in motion. Simply place an object - like a cup or your hand - near the base of the faucet to turn the water on and off auto-matically, significantly reducing water usage and eliminating the possibility of leaving the faucet running when not in use. Or, simply wave your hand above the faucet to start water flow - and a second wave to stop. You can also adjust the fau-cet’s temperature and flow the traditional way, using its convenient side handle. MotionSense faucets are easy to install and can be purchased at your local home improvement retailer or wholesale show-room.Warm up with cool savings

Did you know that yearly heating and cooling costs average more than $1,000? Installing a programmable thermostat takes only a couple of hours and can sig-nificantly help reduce your energy costs.

How to ‘green’ your home in 48 hoursCost-effective and sustainable projects anyone can do with ease

And, programmable thermostats have come a long way with new, sophisticated technology. New systems resemble mini-computers and offer users an interactive experience. After answering questions about your preferences and usage, pro-grams are set accordingly, letting you adjust settings from any room in the house. Not going to be home? Programmable thermostats are available to control settings from smartphones and you can set separate programs for each day of the week, giving you complete con-trol over your heating and cooling and helping to reduce wasted energy.Shower in the savings

Any homeowner would agree that sav-ing water to help the environment and to lower their water bill is a great idea. However, many may not agree if these savings interfere with the enjoyment of their daily shower. Luckily, the Moen Caldwell Four-Function Eco-Performance Showerhead is an ideal solution that offers water savings without sacrificing a quality showering experience. Installing in just minutes, you can shower in the savings, as Caldwell has a flow rate of 2.0 gallons per minute (gpm), 20 percent less than the industry standard of 2.5 gpm, and meets the Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense criteria.--Freshen up

Paint can add an instant facelift to any room. For as little as $20 per gallon, you can add some color, refresh the walls and help pull the room together. Painting an accent wall is also a great idea to add a ‘wow factor’ to your room while also sav-ing time and money. And today, many paint manufacturers offer non-toxic paints with low volatile organic com-pounds (VOCs) formulations to reduce these pollutants in your home. Plus, unique formulations, such as Refreshfrom Dutch Boy, also offer added mildew resis-tance and are Indoor Air Quality certified by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute, providing a paint that is not only healthier for you, your family and the environment, but is vibrant and durable as well.-

Not sure how to tackle this project or want inspiring ideas? New apps for your smart phone are available, such as ‘Better Homes & Gardens’ How to Paint Anything, to help with your room trans-formation.

Although you may not be able to add more hours to your day, in one weekend you can easily tackle some environmen-tally friendly projects to help “greenify” and improve your home - and hopefully keep some money in your pocket.

(BPT) - ‘I’m going to regret this in the morning.’ Whether it was capping a high-calorie meal with a decadent dessert or agreeing to read just one more pre-bedtime book to an overtired toddler, nearly everyone has had reason to utter those words at some point in their lives. When it comes to money decisions, however, the last thing you want is regrets. Yet many of us have them, according to a recent poll by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). In fact, the poll of more than 2,200 people revealed five common financial regrets, including overspending (53 percent), not saving enough (18 percent), not preparing for retirement (14 percent), failing to buy a house (10 percent) and having bought a house (5 percent).

Fortunately, it is possible to avoid the kind of money decisions that lead to those regrets. Here are some basic steps that can help you make better financial choices and, hopefully, live regret free:Control your spending: It may be easier said than done, but keeping control of your spending is critical. Do whatever it takes to rein in overspending, especially if you rely on credit cards to fund this bad habit. Creating a budget and sticking to it can help. Knowing exactly how much you have to spend each month and having a plan to allocate that money can help you avoid impulse or reactionary spending.Having a handle on your credit can also help you avoid overspending. Monitoring your credit regularly and knowing how much you owe can help you make better decisions about how much more you should spend. And using credit wisely now will make it easier to get additional credit later when there’s something you really need - like a new car or house.Boost your savings: Building your savings is a multi-layered process. You need to know what you’re saving for - an emergency fund, retirement, your child’s college education, your dream vacation or a down payment on a house or car. Whatever your goal for saving (and most of us have more than one), treat it like any other debt that you must pay. You wouldn’t shirk paying your rent each month, and you shouldn’t be lax about paying yourself, in the form of savings, either. Increasing the amount you save often involves trimming the amount you spend. Look for ways to cut costs and make your budget as lean as possible. Saving more could be as simple as making coffee at home every morning instead of buying from a pricey coffee chain. Or, you may take more drastic steps like getting a second job.Plan ahead for your golden years: Once you retire, it will be nearly impossible to build more savings, so the time to fund retirement is long before it occurs. If your employer offers a 401(k), you should contribute the maximum allowed. If you don’t have access to an employer-funded plan, explore your options with individual retirement accounts. There are also tips available online to help you plan a debt-free retirement.Bringing it all home: If buying a house is a reasonable goal for you, then go about it wisely. Save for a down payment (this could take several years), monitor your credit and take steps to ensure it will be in good shape when you apply for a mortgage. Explore your mortgage and housing options thoroughly before signing on the dotted line, and never allow your heart to rule your head when it comes time to make a purchase.

Avoiding money decisions you’ll regret later
