Halo
RRHRPA Members:
I hope this message finds you well and everyone is prepared for the quickly approaching Holiday Season. It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is less than a week away. This past month has been very busy for the SHRM organization with tons of information being shared in preparation for the New Year. I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a few days at the National Leadership Conference held in Washington DC. During this conference we were able to network with HR Professionals across the country and internationally. There were 400 members that attended the Legislative Day on Capitol Hill. During this time we visited Senator Durbin and Senator Kirk’s office asking for support to make the bill for Educational Assistance permanent and to stop efforts to remove the pre-tax benefit to section 125 plans, specifically 401k plans. It was interesting to see and hear the perspectives of the legislators and their assistants. Let’s hope that with all of the voices that were on Capitol Hill, we are heard and the tax incentives that we have grown to think of as permanent don’t get removed or expire. During the conference itself, we were able to network and share chapter activities to learn what is working well for chapters and what isn’t working well. We also were able to attend the National SHRM Headquarters and see where all of the information collections and sharing takes place. Lots of good ideas were shared at the conference and I am hopeful that we can take some of this information and implement it in our chapter to help grow our efforts so we can be an engaged group, who leads in our communities and inspires others. As a reminder, we will be voting on our board positions at our November 27, 2012 meeting, so anyone interested in serving on the board or that would like to nominate someone for a board position please attend the meeting and/or let anyone on the current board know. The IL State Leadership Conference will be held on January 28, 2013, with the board of directors invited to attend. Once elections are completed in November, we will notify those who are invited to attend and represent our chapter. Our 2013 Chapter Meeting dates have been confirmed and are below:
January 29, 2013 February 26, 2013
March 26, 2013 April 30, 2013 May 28, 2013

LEGISLATIVE
In September, the federal appellate court with jurisdiction in Illinois reversed a prior decision and held that the Americans with Disabilities Act in most cases requires an employer to transfer a disabled employee to a vacant position, even if the disabled employee is not the most qualified applicant.
In EEOC v. United Airlines, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit reversed its 2000
decision in EEOC v. Humiston-Keeling, in which the court had held that it was unreasonable under the ADA for an employee to insist that he or she be transferred to a position for which there were better-qualified applicants. In reversing its prior decision, the court held that the ADA contemplated that disabled employees would be given preferences over non-disabled employees, as a means of accomplishing the ADA’s goals.
After the decision in United Airlines, a disabled employee need show only that he or she
is qualified for the open position. If the disabled employee is qualified, the employer must offer the position to the disabled employee, unless doing so would present an undue hardship. The fact that the employer is being prevented from hiring the most qualified applicant is not, in and of itself, an undue hardship. Doug Lee, Legislative Chair
DIVERSITY It’s Diversity Month—within our group, at least! At our November meeting, we will present our Diversity Award to the winning local employer. Don’t miss seeing who it is. Also, our program will be our annual diversity training. Join Carol Fitzgerald and Rebecca Muñoz-Ripley from the YWCA as we all learn more about the unconscious messages we get about others—and about what choices we can make to guide our behavior. How do these unconscious messages affect our workplace? Join us for the program this month, and see! Carol Fitzgerald, Diversity Chair
CERTIFICATION What HR Certification can do for you??
Being HR Certified gives you the competitive advantage. HR Certified individuals receive recognition from peers and organizations. Individuals show mastery of HR knowledge and dedication by being HR Certified. Being certified can assist individuals in job search and business. Based on HRCI’s 2008 Value of Certification Survey, “One out of two hiring managers consider a candidate’s certification status when making decisions on whom to hire or interview.” “Organizations preferred HR certification for exempt-level positions.” “Organizations believe that having certified HR professionals provide a competitive business advantage to the organization.” If you are currently certified and need to earn credit hours, the RRHRPA meetings can help. Just by attending our monthly meetings, you can earn 10 credit hours!! (We don’t meet June, July, August and December). The RRHRPA Board also has openings that can earn an individual 3 credit hours a year!! If you
are interested, please contact one of our Board Members for more information. Be HR Smart…Get Certified! Stay HR Smart…Recertify!! Kendra Hull, Certification Chair
