Regional excellence in gastroenterology took a huge leap forward with the grandopening of North Ohio Gastroenterology in Westlake last month.

Mayor Dennis Clough joined Drs. Khaled Issa, Craig Harris and Edmond Blades, all acknowledged leaders in this important specialty, for the ribbon-cutting.

“We are very proud to have you here in the City of Westlake. You bring a standardof excellence that sets you and our community apart,” said the Mayor.

Drivers along the Bradley-Clemens corridor, will appreciate Westlake architectSteven Schill’s facility design. With elevated intentions of patient service within, thebuilding exterior and streetscape looks and feels more like a spa than a medical facility.

Cutting edge amenities are available on both comfort and high-tech fronts inside.Dr. Issa and the North Ohio Gastroenterology team worked closely to create a model

practice that offers leading edge components in all categories.“We are almost paperless,” said Dr. Issa of the practice’s conformity to coming

standards of electronic patient records. “And we have made every effort to make thefacility very patient friendly, from its location to the amenities inside.”

Everything inside is high-tech. The best in computer-based screening and diagnosticequipment is on site. 12,000 square feet in all, 11 exam rooms, endoscopy unit, with threeprocedural suites and even 42 inch plasma monitors for doctors to view procedures. It isall done with patient service and privacy in mind.

Yes, there is a sensitivity required of addressing gastrointestinal issues andprocedures. North Ohio Gastroenterology is committed to protecting the privacy ofpatients with compassion and care. The nine, large, private recovery rooms are a goodexample of this commitment.

Drs. Issa, Harris and Blades are recognized regional leaders in the specialty.Dr. Issa was the Chair of Endoscopy at MetroHealth Medical Center for 10 years and

is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Case. He is the Director of Endoscopy at St. JohnWest Shore Hospital and also has privileges at Lakewood, Fairview and MetroHealthhospitals. Dr. Harris has been in private practice since 1981. He did his fellowship at theCleveland Clinic and has privileges at Fairview, St. John West Shore and LakewoodHospitals.

Dr. Blades is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at Case Western ReserveUniversity. He formerly directed University Hospitals’ Endoscopy Unit and itsgastroenterology fellowship training program. His privileges are at St. John West Shore,Lakewood and Fairview Hospitals.

An exciting addition to the staff is Dr. Noma Dakhil, a female specialist who willjoin the North Ohio Gastroenterology team in November!

“She has an interest in women’s gastroenterology and this is something that thecommunity has wanted for along time,” reports PetraBoesinger, Administrator.“She is a very exciting additionto our team and to our practicein the community.”

The real importance ofNorth Ohio Gastroenterology, however, is community health!

Colon cancer ranks as thethird leading cause of cancerdeath among men and womenin the United States. Theproblem is colon cancer mayoften show no symptoms untilthe advanced stages. More than90 percent of patientsdiagnosed with colon cancerare aged 50 and older.

North OhioGastroenterology exists toprotect community healthfrom a common but treatablethreat. They urge people, especially 50 and over, to havea colonoscopy for colorectalcancer screening even if theyare symptom free.

Community West Foundation…..The Caring Continues: A Fundraiser

for Local Cancer PatientsImagine being so sick with cancer

that you can’t afford to have the disease! That unthinkable scenario is sadly

common for many in the West Shorewho enter treatment. They may then beunable to work, earn enough to maintainhouse payments or insurance premiumsor, sometimes, even afford groceries.

Want to help?Taking place on Saturday,

November 7 at the Lakewood ElksLodge in Westlake, a tasty buffet dinnerand reverse raffle with sideboardsbenefits the Caring Continues Fundproviding financial aid to adult cancerpatients receiving treatment at theCleveland Clinic Cancer Center atFairview Hospital.

The “Caring Continues”Fundraiser was initiated by long-timeWest Shore residents Bill Cochrane andhis sister, KC Cimo, four years ago.

Bill and KC teamed up with theCommunity West Foundation and theMoll Cancer Center to raise resourcesfor the Caring Continues Fund to helppeople facing hardships whileundergoing treatment for cancer. Billlost his wife, Barbara, to cancer in 2004and created “Caring Continues” as ameans of transforming the tremendousgrief of her loss into something positive.

Bill’s legacy to Barbara’s spirit andcommitment lives on through theCaring Continues event in her honor.

“It is amazing to realize that manypeople can’t afford to have cancer,”said Bill. “It is unbelievable, but true. And that is why we started this event.”

Through the generosity ofsupporters, the Oncology SocialWorkers at Moll Cancer Center wereable to help approximately 200 patientsin 2008 with rent, utilities, medication, car payments, and transportation tomedical appointments. They alsoprovided Giant Eagle gift cards to assistwith gasoline and food expenses. Over200 people from the community, manyof whom have been impacted by cancerin some way, will gather together toenjoy an evening of dinner, reverseraffle, sideboards and some great silentauction items generously donated bylocal businesses. It will be a great nightand a great way to express gratitude forthe help and support received at theMoll Cancer Center.

Several patients of the Moll Centeroffered personal testimonials at lastyear’s event. “Cancer is devastating, and treatment can be very hard,” saidone man who underwent simultaneouschemo and radiation therapies that

Bill Cochrane & KC Cimo

prevent his from maintaininghis earning ability. “This groupand the people at the MollCenter meant so much to meand my wife,” he said. “No, itdid not fix everything. But itgave us a beacon of hope whenwe needed one the most.”

Dr. Timothy Spiro,Director of the Moll CancerCenter at Fairview Hospital, emphasized the importance ofthe community’s involvementin the “Caring Continues”Program. “The support of thisgroup is so important to thepeople we serve,” said Dr.Spiro. “Cancer can be adevastating disease. It is mademore challenging whenpatients are unable to workand maintain their paychecks.Imagine the hardships ofbattling this disease and thenalso struggling to keep up withhouse payments, insuranceand medical bills, and even groceries. The work of this program cannot beunderestimated. We are so very, very grateful for their support.”

Old Man inthe Kitchen

Hi Everyone! Old Man in the Kitchen here, Tom.Here’s an Old Wives Tale from one of our readers. Thank

you: “My mother used to tell me not to put my elbows on thetable, because, if you put both elbows on the table at the sametime, it could create a circuit while you are eating and you mightbe electrocuted.” You have to love them! They had all the smarts!

Try this delicious recipe for Chicken Stew – Great and easy!1 package (16 oz) of frozen California Blend vegetables, thawed and drained; 2 cups

cubed, cooked chicken; 1 can (10-3/4 oz) Cream of Potato soup; ½ cup shredded cheddarcheese (sharp, if you like); 1 tube of crescent rolls; 1 cup of milk; ½ tsp salt; ½ cup Frenchfried onions. In bowl, combine vegetables, chicken, soup, milk, cheese, onions and salt.Transfer to a greased 9 x 13 baking dish. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.Meanwhile, separate crescent dough into two rectangles. Seal perforations. Place over warmfilling and bake 15 minutes or until crust is golden brown. It’s like a big chicken pot pie!

Take care friends and keep the old wives stories coming.Old Man in the Kitchen, Tom

Spend some time and put down those shopping bags and enjoy an espresso at acozy and friendly bistro. Share an ice-cream cone on your way to the park. Savor
