team to simple emails lettinganother sister know youre think-ing of them, these are things I amthankful for.

This month, our chapter will bemaking dinners at Entree Vous onNovember 15. Perhaps you coulddonate one of the meals to thosewho are less fortunate. I thinkthats what I may do. I have a lotto be thankful for, and I wouldlike to share that with others.

During this time of giving thanks, please remember those less fortu-nate than us. And I hope youhave a memorable time with yourfamily, friends and Delta Gamma.

Looking back on my days inschool, I learned that Thanksgiv-ing is the traditional Americanholiday where we give thanks tothe conclusion of the harvest sea-son. The Pilgrims celebratedtheir first harvest in 1621. Theycelebrated, feasted and gavethanks.

Despite these trying economicaltimes, we still have so much forwhich to be thankful. I am thank-ful for my health, my family andmy friends. I am thankful thatmy boyfriend just survived a 3-month deployment on an oil plat-form near Saudi Arabia. Im alsothankful for precious niece, Caro-line Edith, who was born in Sep-tember. I am so grateful that sheis healthy with a full head ofbrown hair. (Just like Suri

Cruise). If only I can convince herto go to University of South Caro-lina instead of Clemson. Her par-ents went to Clemson and littleMiss Caroline is already deckedout in orange and purple. Any-way, I digress.

Im also very thankful for DeltaGamma. You are family to me. Iam so grateful my sisters arethere for us whenever we needthem. From our DG Does Good

Consider a leadership mo-ment when you felt com-pelled to support the workand message of a leader?Identify a time when otherswillingly followed you creat-ing that seamless relation-ship that propelled yourwork forward?

According to Kouzes andPosner (2002), constituen-cies are more willing to fol-low leaders who possess a

set of four characteristics. These characteristics havewithstood the test of timeand remain consistentamongst continents. Since1987 Kouzes and Posnerhave been asking otherswhat they look for in theirleader and consistentlyfound the following fourvalues remain at the top ofthe list time after time.

Honesty Individuals wanttheir leader to be truthful, ethical, and princi-pled. Leaders of integrityand character instill confi-dence and help tostrengthen the leader/follower relationship. Thefamiliar phrase, do whatyou say you will do is howindividuals measure aleaders degree of honestywhich in turn affects theleaders ability to enableothers to act.

Forward-looking Leaderswho possess a vision for thefuture, clearly articulatethis vision to others, andconsider the future whenmaking decisions demandrespect from others. Indi-

viduals want to rally arounda leader who envisions abetter future.

Competent In order towork towards a vision, lead-ers who are capable andeffective rally thetroops. Even though aleader may be able to in-spire a shared vision, follow-ers must trust that theleader is able to implementthis vision. Without compe-tence, the vision seems likepie in the sky.

Inspiring Individuals want aleader who is enthusiasticand passionate about thefuture. A leader who articu-lates the vision in an encour-aging manner receives highmarks from others. Individu-als want to envision a posi-tive future and inspiringleaders provide this pic-ture. Leaders who confirmnegative emotions and feel-ings of hopelessness do notgenerate the paradigm shiftneeded to generate optimalperformance that resultsfrom positive emotions.

Together these four qualitiesdefine credible leadership.Individuals whose leadershipphilosophy and ways of lead-ing demonstrate these val-ues generate constituencies

who (1) are proud of theirorganization, (2) feel asense of team, (3) articulatehow their personal valuesalign with the values of theorganization, (4) feel com-mitted to the organization, and (5) have a sense of own-ership in the organization.

Kouzes and Posner (2002)share that before becominga credible leader, we mustfirst find our own voicewhich essentially means toclarify our values. Valuessupply us with the moralcompass by which to navi-gate the course of our dailylives (p. 48). When a diffi-cult decision arises in ourpersonal, professional, orcollegiate lives, values pro-vided the foundation for our

decision-making.Values not only tell us whatto do but give us energywhen we act from a values-centered framework. Mak-ing decisions from this per-spective provides a sense ofcontrol and generates orderin ones life.

Values clarity also increasescommitment to the organi-zation. Research indicates

even if the organizationclearly articulates its valuesbut an individual is unclearon her or his values, com-mitment to the organizationdecreases.

How do we gain clarityaround our own values? There are many ways to con-sider your personal valuesthus leading to credibleleadership. One way is to

utilize DGs Leadership forLife , which is accessible viamyDG at deltagamma.org.

Best of luck on this journeyof self-exploration.
