‘SunPipes’ were first used approximately 4000 years ago when the Egyptians used light shafts andmirrors to bring daylight down in to the centre of the Pyramids. The modern version of SunPipes waspatented in 1988 but Monodraught recognised the enormous energy saving potential of applying SunPipesto commercial properties, hence the need for this brochure.
According to Government sources, the UK is responsible for discharging 150 million tonnes of carbondioxide into the atmosphere. In the last 15 years, the amount of energy consumed in Offices, Schools andHospitals has risen over 250%. More than half of this consumption is electricity. The Governmentcalculates that 20% of the £50 billion a year spent on fuel in the UK could be saved cost effectively byinvesting in energy conservation.
In Schools alone, Government sourcesstate that 80% of the electricity
consumed, is used for electric lighting.By using Monodraught SunPipes, atleast 75% of the electricity usedfor lighting during daytime use canbe saved.

Natural daylight where windows can’t reach!
Putting the wind and sun to work!
MonodraughtTerry Payne, Chairman andManaging Director of Monodraughtformed the Company 30 years agoinitially to pioneer the developmentof vertical balanced-flue chimneysystems for the domestic andcommercial heating market.
In 1982 Monodraught launched theWindcatcher Natural Ventilationsystem, which encapsulates anyprevailing wind to provide energyfree, natural ventilation and in 1996introduced the SunPipe to the UKmarket.
A significant feature of theMonodraught product rangecontinues to be the high level ofarchitectural design empathy, prod-ucing visually appealing designswhilst achieving an efficient andpractical contribution to the optimumharnessing of our natural resources.
The Original PatentPatent No. 5,099,622 was originallygranted to a British inventor, StephenM Sutton in Oakhurst, Australia onNovember 22nd, 1988.
The invention was described as, “asystem having a tubular body with atransparent cover to prevent the ingressof dust and with a second transparentcover locating at ceiling level andattached to the tubular body. Thecomposition of all components preventsexcess air movement, which creates astatic column of air within the tubularskylight. This column of air acts as aninsulator which prevents heat from
entering the room or conversely in winterfrom escaping from the room”.
The system has been a remarkablesuccess in both Australia and NorthAmerica as a highly effective method ofconveying natural daylight from roof leveldown to the room below.
Monodraught has greatly improved theoriginal system and has filed five newPatents covering these improvements. All Monodraught SunPipes aremanufactured in the UK and arecomplimented by a wide range ofancillary products all based on the sameconcept of energy saving innovations.

Natural daylight where windows can’t reach!
4 Monodraught
Technical DetailsDescriptionThis system maximises the conceptof renewable energy by reflectingand intensifying sunlight and evennormal daylight, down through apure silver base mirror-finishaluminium tube.
A clear UV stabilised polycarbonatetop dome seals the light pipeagainst the ingress of dust and aclear stipple finish polycarbonatediffuser at ceiling level evenlyspreads light into the room orspace below. The SunPipe systemis highly effective in both sunnyand overcast conditions and evenwhen it is raining.
There is virtually no limit to thelength of SunPipe or the number ofbends that can be used and theSunPipe carries a 25 year guaranteewith a life expectancy of 35 years.
CompositionThe SunPipe consists of a high puritysilver coated aluminium tube, whichhas a 25-year guarantee againstdiscolouration. This specularaluminium surface is coated withPVD and the presence of a UVinhibitor provides outstanding QUVdurability with no decrease in totalreflectance and the special surface
treatment provides excellent colourrendition of natural light.
A brushed nylon gasket at the top ofthe system allows the system tobreathe preventing condensationproblems, whilst the diffuser atceiling level seals against the ceiling. All vertical joints are sealed withaluminium tape.

stabilised unbreakable polycar-bonate as standard or are suppliedin impact resistant modified acrylic(ICI Perspex) where SunPipes areto be used in a harsh UV proneenvironment such as the MiddleEast or southern Europe. The newDiamond domes are injectionmoulded polycarbonate 4mm thickand are unbreakable and aretherefore vandal resistant. Domescan be supplied with optionalsecurity screws.
The Diamond DomeThe Diamond shaped dome introduced in March 2002 has provedso popular that all major sizes are manufactured in this Diamondshaped design. The larger systems, 750mmdiameter and above, aremanufactured ashemispherical domes.Diamond domes aredesigned specifically tomaximise the penetration of sunlightthrough the flat prisms and to capture theearly morning and late afternoon sun throughthe arrangement of vertical prisms on the circumference.

ListedBuildingsAs a result of the increased interestin the application of SunPipes(instead of traditional Velux typewindows), Listed Buildings Officersin Conservation Areas often favourthis more discreet SunPipetermination, which is available witha low profile dome on all sizes.
Planning PermissionIn general terms, it is notnecessary to apply for planningpermission for the installation of aSunPipe, particularly on smallersizes, since a SunPipe of 230mmor 300mm diameter is no differentto a flue pipe or chimney flue, which does not require planningpermission.
However, if your property issituated in a Conservation Area, then specific permission must besought from your Listed BuildingsOfficer for the installation of aSunPipe, since it is unlawful to alterany roof profile or covering withoutprior permission of the ListedBuildings Officer.

SunPipe flashing details for tiled roofwith ABS upstand to suit a sloping ceiling
The ConservationSunPipe has beendeveloped to answer theproblem encountered inmany Conservation areas, where the roofs of listedbuildings are required to
retain their original lines and often a normalskylight or rooflight is not allowed.
Designed to meet exactingdemandsThe Conservation SunPipe has been designedto replicate a Victorian cast iron rooflight, andfits virtually flush with the roofline of a pitchedroof building. This makes it a very unobtrusivetermination for the SunPipe.
Rooflight to SunPipeThe rooflight includes a special adaptor to fitto the circular SunPipe, that captures up to3 times more light than a standard SunPipeand reflects and intensifies that naturaldaylight down to the ceiling diffuser creatingan even spread of light into the room below. The Gallery SunPipe Patent No. 0309071.9

The Monodraught Square SunPipe has beenspecifically developed to provide an unobtrusivetermination for any roof finish. The Square SunPipeis in addition to SunPipe’s range of Diamond, hemi-spherical and Conservation SunPipes and is initiallyproduced as standard in a 600 x 600mm nominalformat to suit the 300mm (12”) dia, 450mm (18”)dia and (530mm) (21”) dia SunPipe sizes.
Designed to the highest standardsThe construction of the Square SunPipe is basedon the rooflight construction produced by TheMetal Window Company and is constructed to thefollowing specification: 2mm thick CR4 Steel, zincplated to 25 microns and polyester powder coatedto 75 microns DFT to a range of colours andincorporates their patented “Thermoliner” toprevent condensation.
Rooflight to SunPipeThe rooflight includes a special adaptor to fit to thecircular SunPipe, that captures up to 3 times morelight than a standard SunPipe and reflects andintensifies that natural daylight down to the ceilingdiffuser creating an even spread of light into theroom below.
SunPipe Square DiffusersSunPipes are available with a 600 x 600mm square ceiling diffuserto suit suspended ceilings or to match an existing ceiling grid.
The square diffuser can be used with the 300mm (12”) dia, 450mm(18”) dia and the 530mm (21”) dia SunPipe systems.
A circular to square transition unit fits to the SunPipe tube andspreads the daylight out to the edges of the diffuser, which thenspreads the light out evenly into the space below. Patent No. 0309071.9

• In terms of physical safety, SunPipe Fire Guard has been successfullyimpact tested (BS6206) from both sides.
• The laminated glass will also provide excellent sound resistance to the following performance: 9mm total thickness RW37dB (Rtra 33dB).
Sleev-it ‘Fire Choke’Fire CollarsFitted above a plaster board ceilingand thereby leaving the SunPipeceiling diffusers unaffected. TheSleev-it ‘Fire Choke’ collars aredesigned to prevent the spread ofsmoke and fire through a roof-space by crushing the SunPipe, when the aluminium is subjected tofire giving up to 2 hours protection.
Each ‘Fire Choke’ collar contains‘Intumex’, an intumescent graphitecompound and Alpha Firescreen1032-2-SP, a woven fibreglass fabriccoated with specially formulatedmicronised aluminium polymer.
Manufactured in 0.9mm mild steel, the fire choke collar is supplied intwo halves, which clamp aroundthe SunPipe aluminium tube.
• Fully tested to current British and/or European Standards. (Test report TE 39902).
• Up to 2 hours fire resistance, specially adapted for MonodraughtSunPipe installations.
• Available in a range of sizes upto 750mm diameter.
• Requires no maintenance and is suitable for all interior applications.
The ‘Fire Choke’ patented system contains theexpanding intumescent material which crushes thealuminium SunPipe when the temperature in theroom exceeds 150°C.
The Alpha Firescreen 1032-2-SP fabric is securedinside each section of the fire collar, laying betweenthe wall of the aluminium SunPipe, and the ‘Intumex’graphite compound within the fire collar casing. Oncethe intumescent material expands as a reaction to theincreasing temperature, it becomes encased withintwo pillows of woven fibreglass fabric as it virtuallyblows up the fabric like a balloon, spreadingoutwards from both sections to cover the inside ofthe steel casing of the ‘Fire Choke’ collar. Thisproduces a drumskin effect across the collaropening, which contains the heated char from theexfoliated intumescent material, therefore sealing offthe penetration against fire, smoke and hot gases.

Due to the worldwide uncertainty ofthe future of energy costs and thealmost certain increase in electricityprices over the coming years, considerable interest has beenfocused on the advantages of theSunPipe system and the advantagesit offers, namely:
• No electrical energy costs duringdaylight hours
• No heat gain to inside areas
• Where used in offices etc, an appropriate reduction in the cooling load will be achieved
• No dependence on outside powers or states for supply of electricity for lighting
• Virtually self-cleansing in most countries due to its shape and, therefore, only occasional external cleaning is required
• Simple to install by local labour
• Supplied in kit form that simply clips together
No heat gainAnother remarkablefeature of the SunPipesystem is the ability toeliminate heat gain. Withan external temperatureof 30°+ the temperatureof the air at the top ofthe SunPipe willincrease and expandthrough the brushednylon gasket. However, heat will notdrop, so the diffuser ofthe SunPipe remainsat room temperature. This phenomenon has beenproved on a number ofoccasions by Architectsplacing their hand on theunderside of the ceiling diffuserin a hot country, which remainscool, as compared to theunderside of a rooflight orskylight, which is red hot!

Daylight onDemandThere are times when SunPipeusers may wish to shut out thelight into the room, for instance in aHospital Ward or a Nursing Home, aConference Room, a School class-room or even a private bedroom.
Two simple methods have beendeveloped for either shutting outthe light or indeed, restrictingdaylight to a desired daylight level.
Motorised Damper SystemThe motorised shut off damper isavailable with a modulating motor,so that the light level can be variedaccording to the users requirements. The Belimo motor is linked to awall switch or small control panel
to allow the light to be adjustedaccordingly. This system is partic-ularly suitable for larger ConferenceHalls, Lecture Theatres, etc., whereremote control is required.
Black Out DiffuserThis consists of a simple black outcover, which has a twist lockoperation, and a ceiling trim withcorresponding locking pins that fitsto an existing SunPipe diffuser.Ideally suited to bedrooms orhospital wards where a simpleblack out is required, which can beapplied or removed by hand.
Putting the sun to work!
Integral Electric Light KitWhere a single source light is required, such as the top of astaircase, landing etc, the SunPipe can be supplied with a 50 wattlow voltage Halogen light fitting and transformer that has beenspecially designed so as not to affect the natural light outputduring daytime use. The polished aluminium light fitting can evenbe supplied with a sensor to automatically bring on the electriclight when the natural daylight falls below a preset level. Thisarrangement provides 430 Lux at desk level.
CeilingDiffusersThe new Monodraught SunPipeCeiling Diffuser assembly isdesigned for easy installation andcleaning. It also provides aneffective seal for the SunPipe, preventing the ingress of dust fromceiling level.
The new diffuser creates an evenspread of light across any designatedarea. Diffusers are available in clearstippled finish for maximum lightoutput and opal finish for a softer, but reduced level of light.
Ceiling trims are provided in whiteplastic as standard, but brass, chrome and brushed aluminiumeffect finishes are available, toenhance a variety of decors.

Natural Daylight & Natural Ventilation for small areasMonovent
MonoventSunCatcher
Designed to provide natural lightand ventilation to bathrooms, kitchens, toilets, etc., this low costABS system is similar in operationto its big brothers the SunCatcherand Windcatcher. The Monoventcan be used on flat roof and anypitched roof applications as theventilation is carried throughflexible ducting.
The Monovent expels stale air fromthe room as a result of the passivestack ventilation principle, but alsohas the added advantages ofbringing in a supply of fresh air onthe windward side of the system. The ceiling ventilator is fullyadjustable from closed to fully openand is also available with a brassor chrome finish, where required.
The Monovent encompasses allthe advantages of PSV systems, which have proved so popular forsocial housing, and meets theBuilding Regulation requirements. However, as with its stable matethe 'Sola-vent', the Monovent alsobrings in natural light.

Natural Daylight & Natural Ventilation in one installation
22 Monodraught
Whereas Monovents are designedfor domestic and small officeapplications, MonodraughtSunCatchers provide a satisfactorysolution of combining natural lightand natural ventilation.
The Monodraught SunCatchersystem provides controlled naturalventilation as well as providing allthe benefits of natural daylight. Anyprevailing wind pressure carries acontinuous fresh air supply throughweather protected louvres on thewindward side of the system atroof level. The wind movement isencapsulated by internal quadrantswhich turns the wind through 90°forcing air down through internalducts into the room below, slightlypressurising the internal space.Warm, stale air is expelled from theroom by the Passive Stack ventilationprinciple of differential temperaturesand the natural buoyancy of airmovement. Manual or motorisedmotors at the base of the systemcontrol the rate of ventilation. The central SunPipe tube is
integrated into the system andconveys natural daylight to thesame room or internal space.
The SunCatcher has the uniqueadvantage that with air intakes onall four sides, it does not matterwhich way the wind is blowingsince one side of the system willalways act as the air intake whilstthe opposite side, being in the lowpressure zone, related to thesystem, becomes a natural extractto the room. When the windchanges direction so the intakeand extract will also change theirfunction.
The system is designed to producean air change rate of 5 to 6 AC/hrand full calculations are providedfor each Project.

The ‘famous’ Eco House at Nottingham University whichhas had wide publicity in the Architectural press, featureda bespoke pinnacle SunCatcher system, with apolycarbonate cone. This highlights Monodraught’s abilityto produce any architectural feature. The pinnacleSunCatcher serves the first floor landing and staircase anda further SunPipe serves the ground floor cloakroom.
Night-Time CoolingAnother major advantage of theSunCatcher is that the damperscan be programmed to fully openat night-time during summermonths to allow the prevailing windmovement to force fresh air downinto the room below. This not onlyprovides a ‘cleansing’ effectpurging and removing staleodours from the room, but achievesall this without compromising thesecurity of the building.
Winter OperationDuring winter months the damperscan be programmed to providebackground ventilation only. An airquality monitor can also beincorporated so as to overridetemperatures where necessary.Under normal ventilation strategiesthe dampers will be set to bebetween 3% and 5% open. This willallow trickle ventilation whilstavoiding problems of colddraughts entering the building. Thelimited cold air intake being denserthan the internal ambient air falls tofloor level allowing the warmerstale air to rise and exit through thecontrolled ventilation openings.
The system is controlled by manualor fully modulating dampers, linkedto temperature and air qualitysensors which in turn are linked toa Cylon digital control panel.
