GREETINGS FROM FR . DAVE

Last weekend, I invited you to take a moment and bless your homes — renewing the dedication of your homes to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, and praying for protection from any evil. I am including the house blessing in this bulletin once again for those of you who would like to make use of it. You are welcome to obtain blessed water from our baptismal font at any time. Simply bring a container from home and label it. May each and every one of us submit ever more fully to the authority of Jesus. He alone can be the center of our lives and our reference point for living our lives meaningfully — in a way that prepares us for eternal life in heaven!

At the home’s entrance: O God, protect our going and coming. Let us share the hospitality of this home with all who visit us.

In living room: O God, give your blessings to all who share this room that we may be knit together in companionship.

In kitchen: O God, you fill the hungry with good things. Send your blessing on us as we work in this kitchen, and make us ever thankful for our daily bread.

In dining room: Blessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth, for you give us food and drink to sustain our lives and make our hearts glad. Help us to be grateful for all your mercies and mindful of the needs of others.

In bedrooms: Protect us Lord as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake we may keep watch with Christ and asleep, we may rest in his peace.

Conclude with: Visit, we beseech Thee, O Lord, this dwelling, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy; let Thy holy Angels dwell herein, to preserve us in peace; and let Thy blessing be upon us forever. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THANKSGIVING! I invite you to join with the parish community for our annual Thanksgiving Day Mass, at 9:00am on the 23rd. This is always a highly energetic and fun Mass with a full crowd. One of our traditions is to have a procession at the offertory with food donations for our Food Closet. If you wish to participate, please come — with or without food offerings! Many of you have already generously assisted with our Thanksgiving food baskets — huge thanks to you and to the Food Closet crew who got it all organized and distributed!

Congratulations and blessings to Liliana Case, Eleanor DeCicco, Cecilia Dumlao, Carter Johenkins, and Lauren Tang, who were baptized on Saturday!

Last week, funeral services were held for Joleen Hackl and William Smith. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace.

BRETT ’S TWO CENTS

Happy Thanksgiving week! I usually avoid doing “repeats” in my column, but recently have had a number of folks comment on the version of morning and evening prayer that Fr. Dave and I gave out a few years ago. Thinking it might be helpful for some of our newer parishioners, and maybe even some of our “veterans” who’ve forgotten, this week I decided to re-present the morning prayer (and next week, the evening prayer). Use them well!

Morning Prayer

Begin with the sign of the cross. Loving Father, thank you for the gift of this new day. Thank you for the world you have created, the wonders of nature, and the unique person you have made me. Thank you for loving me, just as I am; for calling me by name and knowing me through and through – and for liking me! I thank you for sending Jesus to be our Savior and as I begin this day I once again acknowledge my need for him. I can’t save myself. Apart from Jesus, my life has no purpose and no hope of eternal life. Therefore, I surrender myself to you totally: my thoughts, feelings, dreams, willpower, concerns, joys, abilities and weaknesses. And I offer you everything this day will hold. Pause and confide your plans and activities of this day to the Lord.

I commit myself to following your ways, to seeking your will and to being a witness of you. Pour forth your Holy Spirit to transform me and deepen your image in me. I especially pray for the grace to overcome the following weaknesses: confide the special areas you’re working on to the Lord – bad habits, character defects, recurrent sins.

Father, I thank you for the people you’ve placed in my life to help me, love me and nurture me. As I begin this day I pray for each of them, asking your blessing and protection for them. Include by name family members, friends, those you’re committed to praying for.

I ask for help in dealing well with any trials and temptations that arise today. Give me the grace to be loving, sensitive and tolerant and to readily forgive those who anger or hurt me. May I be a source of encouragement and inspiration to all you bring to me today. Pray especially about any specific challenges you know you’ll face today.

My God, most importantly, help me to remain close to you today – to think of you often, to talk with you frequently and to always trust that you are with me, protecting me, loving me and bringing good out of everything that happens. All of this I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. Close with an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be.

What if we could do 5 Simple Things to fight the darkness in our world? Would we do it? Think of this as redemptive sacrifice. The first benefitted are you and me. The second is the world by our witness. When you see the 5 things you will understand why. The first is Prayer, which connects us with Jesus and fills us with His holy Spirit. It changes us and we share it with others. Next is Fasting. This empties us from attachments, making room for grace which comes from prayer. Third is Almsgiving, works of mercy towards our neighbor which deepens our relationship with Jesus and strengthens our faith. Fourth are frequent Sacraments (Confession and Eucharist) which heals, nourishes, and restores our souls. This school of love allows us to meet Jesus in the Eucharist and God in confession. Fifth is the Word meaning both the Word of God and our witness to what we believe. These five things conform our hearts to Christ. Try them out and see the difference for you and others!

Our Sunday Bible Study will become sessions explaining our Sunday readings, led by the scholarship of Dr. Brant Pitre. We’ll start on December 3rd, the First Sunday of Advent, from 10:45-12:00pm in the Art Room.

Our next Wednesday Bible Study is by Jeff Cavins from Ascension Press: Wisdom — Our Vision for Life. We’ll resume our regular 9:00-10:30am meetings on January 10th, 2018.

Interested in joining one or both bible study groups? Mark your calendars and email Erin!

“If we truly wish to encounter Christ, we have to touch his body in the suffering bodies of the poor. . . The Body of Christ . . . can be seen, through charity and sharing, in the faces and persons of the most vulnerable of our brothers and sisters.” —Pope Francis

Today is the first World Day of the Poor, a day established by Pope Francis on which he asks all of us to reflect on Jesus' great love for those who experience poverty and to encounter our brothers and sisters in need, working alongside them to put faith in action. Put your faith in action by contributing to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. 25% of your contributions remain in the Archdiocese to support programs that benefit our local brothers and sisters in need!

The Giving Tree will be up next weekend!

In addition to the 250 names in need of gifts, there will also be tags for gift cards to Subway, McDonalds, and Starbucks. These will be used

with the homeless teens duffel bags that we build. Some will also be provided to the Beaverton School District HELP Center. These are always appreciated by the teens and families. Tags will also be available for utility assistance and auto gas cards. The need for both is on-going throughout the year.

The Tree will be up for two weeks and all gifts will need to be returned Sunday, December 10th.

I want to send a big thank you to the Knights of Columbus. A Holy Trinity member recently contacted me to let me know that the members at St. Pius had purchased new winter coats for kids and they knew that through our outreach with refugees, the Women’s Center, and the School District, we had awareness of kids in need. They kindly offered them to us for distribution to all we work with. We were able to provide coats to 18 kids in need. Thank you Knights!

I also recently received a call from the Beaverton School District. They had been given a very large donation of backpacks that will eventually get sent to the various schools who have students in need. They generously asked how many we might need for the back pack program and did not hesitate to replenish us with 100 new back packs! Talk about a village working together!

I hope you all enjoy Thanksgiving. Because of you, 250 families, well over 1,200 people, will.

And now a little timely humor:

Q: Why can't you take a turkey to church? A: They use FOWL language. Q: What was the turkey suspected of? A: Fowl play.
