Welcome to the NCHSAA Men’s Soccer Champion-ships! Today at Dail Soccer Field we will crown four cham-pions after a season full of hard work and dedication. We blieve that this will be a tremendous experience for the student-athletes, the coaches, administrators and the fans of the schools who have won their way through the playoffs to reach this point. We are grateful to all of those who have a hand in making these cham-pionships possible, including the host city sponsor, Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance, and our television partner, Time War-ner Cable, who will provide live television coverage once again this year. There are also a lot of volunteers and NCHSAA staff members who have worked tirelessly toward making this event the best it can be. If you are a high school athletics fan, then you are in the right place to enjoy a great day of soccer competition! We appreciate your support of high school athletics and hope you enjoy the best soccer our state has to offer -- The NCHSAA state championshps!

Welcome from the President

Fans,

Welcome to the NCHSAA Men’s Soccer State Championship. Competing for the state title is a

highlight in any high school athlete’s career. Every team remembers the preseason workouts

and the first weeks of practice thinking to themselves this will be our year to play for a state

title. Now, here we are watching the two best volleyball teams compete for the right to be

called a champion…a state champion.

The amount of time and effort by the athletes, the coaches and volunteers has paid off to

punch a ticket to Raleigh today to finish strong and bring a state championship trophy home.

For many of our seniors this is the last time to make an indelible mark for their school’s

sports legacy. Regardless of which team you are here today to cheer on to the title, we must

never forget these are student-athletes who play volleyball for the love of the game and the

competition it provides.

Ever since the NCHSAA was established in 1913, our core mission has been to provide

opportunities for interscholastic competitions within the state of North Carolina. We offer

this opportunity understanding that success in the classroom is key to success in life. Those

students who play sports in high school learn valuable lessons about winning and losing,

working hard, setting goals, building leadership characteristics to name just a few. Each year,

at our annual meeting in May, we recognize those individuals and teams who excel in the

classroom and on the field of competition. We also recognize teams from all four classifica-

tions who over the course of one year are also recognized for displaying sportsmanship in all

of their athletic teams.

Prior to the match today we will be recognizing an athlete from each team which embodies

sportsmanship and serves as ambassador for their team in the community. Sportsmanship is

more important than ever in the world of high school athletics, especially when some of our

professional athletes cannot display the same level of integrity as our high school athletes.

The honorees at today’s state championship exhibit sportsmanship not only during com-

petition, but also during practice when they help a fellow teammate get up after being

knocked down. These athletes are the role models we want all of our younger athletes

to follow and look up to.

Most of all, I want to thank you the FAN for supporting your favorite team today.

Regardless of the outcome, this is a special day for all of our athletes. Thank you for

supporting the NCHSAA and all 409 member schools which makes this association the

best in the country.

Sincerely,

Rodney Shotwell

President

1-A CHAMPIONSHIP - HUGHES HAT TRICK LEADS FRANKLIN ACADEMY PAST COMMUNITY SCHOOL OF DAVIDSON

RALEIGH—Senior striker Nick Hughes had a huge game Saturday evening, scoring a hat trick to lead Franklin Academy of Wake Forest to a 3-1 triumph over Com-munity School of Davidson in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 1-A men’s soccer championship.

Hughes, the Patriot co-captain, was the unanimous choice for Most Valuable Player in the championship match and ended the season with 55 goals. He opened the scoring in the seventh minute with an unassisted tally to give Franklin Academy a 1-0 advantage. Then in the 31st minute, Community School of Davidson tied the game on Francisco Prado’s 43rd goal of the season, as he made a great one-on-one move to elude a defender and slid the shot inside the far post.

But the victorious Patriots came right back just three minutes later, taking a 2-1 lead on Hughes’ second goal of the night, this one on an assist from sophomore Zach Hanson. The third goal came from the same combina-tion just five minutes into the second half, with Hughes scoring on an assist from Hanson for the 3-1 advantage. Both teams had nine shots on goal, with Patriot goal-keeper Ben Voorhis coming up with eight saves. Both teams also had five corner kick opportunities.

2-A CHAMPIONSHIP - SALISBURY BLANKS WASHINGTON 3-0

RALEIGH – Senior midfielder Landon Goodman was the Most Valuable Player as he helped lead Salisbury to a convincing 3-0 victory over Washington in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 2-A men’s soccer champion-ship. Goodman scored the second goal of the game in the 55th minute off an assist from Kevin Flores, his 66th tally of the season, and then the Hornets iced it eight minutes later when freshman Brandon Ibanez lofted in a goal to make it 3-0.

4

Goodman’s single season total of 66 goals is tied for third place all-time in the NCHSAA Record Book. Salisbury had taken a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when senior Chris Uribe scored off a set piece, assisted by Joshua Lynch. Senior goalkeeper Arturo Ramirez recorded the shutout in goal and was credited with four saves. The Hornets had 13 shots on goal to four for the Pam Pack and had six corner kick opportunities to four for Washington.

3-A CHAMPIONSHIP - WEDDINGTON BLANKS LEE COUNTY 2-0

RALEIGH— Weddington made two second-half goals stand up for a 2-0 victory over Lee County for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association state 3-A men’s soccer champion-ship at Dail Soccer Field at North Carolina State University on Saturday night.

Lee County may have had the better of play in the first half, but the teams battled to a scoreless tie after 40 minutes. Then Weddington scored early in the second half when Mitchell Van Dyne ran on to a through ball from Michael Davidson, timed it perfectly, sand scored just inside the far post for a 1-0 Warrior lead in the 45th minute. Van Dyne, a senior forward who was a scoring threat throughout the night, was named the champi-onship Most Valuable Player.

The Warriors opened up a 2-0 lead in the 62nd minute when Jay Peeler played the ball deep to senior forward Mason Peel-er in the box. Peeler then settled it, spun and fired a left-foot-ed shot good for the goal. Weddington had a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Weddington keepers Ben Fletcher and Lucas Gusmao split time in the shutout, with Fletcher credited for a save in the first half and Gusmao getting two saves in the second half.

4-A CHAMPIONSHIP - SOUTH MECKLENBURG SHUTS OUT LANEY 2-0 RALEIGH – Marco Garcia scored the initial goal and South Mecklenburg played a solid all-around game as the Sabres shut out Wilmington Laney 2-0 on Saturday in the North Car-olina High School Athletic Association state 4-A men’s soccer championship. Garcia opened the scoring for the Sabres in the 18th minute as he received a service off a corner kick from Collyn Carpenter, settled it from chest to foot and then slammed it home for his 39th goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. A senior tri-captain, Garcia was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the championship. Senior defenseman Brad Scharf made it 2-0 for South Meck in the 46th minute, with a scramble in front of the net result-ing in a deflection and a goal. Laney had a chance to cut the margin in half with a penalty kick with 12:40 left to play, but failed to convert. The Bucs continued to press forward after that in an attempt to get back in it, but South kept Laney at bay. Sabre goalkeeper Harish Amatya had three saves en route to the shutout. South had six shots on goal to three for Laney and had four corner kicks to two for the Bucs.

South Meck returned to the state championship match for the first time since 1985, and the Sabres earned their first state crown since an open classification championship in 1971.

Coming off of an appearance in the regional finals last year, the Bulldogs built off last year’s success with a tough non-con-ference schedule. The challenging schedule helped build a culture where each player knew and performed their role. The Bulldogs only two conference losses on the season both came against a tough 2A conference foe, Clinton. But the team credits those two losses with fueling the playoff run they’ve been able to make all the way to the state finals for the third time in school history. Wallace-Rose Hill is 2-0 all-time in Championship Game appearances with their last one coming in 2014 as the Bulldogs won their second of back-to-back cham-pionships. Maynor Espinoza leads a powerful attack with over 210 career goals. The team has netted 173 on the season, sixth all-time for a team in a single season.

Coach Neil Hodges said, “We were very competitive in those games and continued to stay positive during that stretch. We knew we had a very good team if everyone worked hard and stayed healthy.” The Villains finished the conference season 7-1, winning the conference championship for the second year in a row. Their only conference loss came against Walkertown on the road, 1-0. Bishop McGuinness has recieved solid play from their back four and great goaltending, especially in the play-offs where they have yet to concede a goal. That back line has allowed the Villains to push forward where they have several options as goal scoring threats. They are scoring 4.2 goals per game while allowing under a goal per match.

Juan Ramirez is quite proud of his team, and the Head Coach of the Nighthawks has every right to be. At 20-0-2, his First Flight club are headed back to the State Championship match for the first time since 2014, and third time in school his-tory, as the Nighthawks seek their first state championship in Men’s Soccer. Last year the team was knocked out of the playoffs in the second round by Northeastern, but the squad regrouped and have fought their way to the final a year later. The roster boasts five starters that were named first team all-conference in the Northeastern Coastal 2A including senior Cameron Hill who was named to the All-Region team as well as Offensive Player of the Year in the league. He has netted 42 goals on the year with 6 assists. Hill’s offensive prowess complements stellar goaltending from fellow senior Grayson Shier. Shier has seen his team only allow 7 goals over the course of the season, only five with him in the net, as First Flight has dominated opponents. During the conference season the Nighthawks only conceded twice. First Flight is averaging 5.7 goals per match while only allowing 0.4 goals per contest. The Nighthawks come into the match very unified after a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Carrboro

Discipline and great defense have been the keys to success for the Chase Trojans. It has been an exciting run through the playoffs to reach the State Finals for the first time in school history. The Trojans lone loss of the season came against conference rival Shelby 2-1. Chase avenged that victory in the third round of the playoffs, nipping the Golden Lions 1-0 on a goal by sophomore Geordy Randlett. Chase is averaging 5.3 goals per match and only allowing 0.4 goals per contest. Senior Preston Walker was named the SMAC Offensive Player of the Year and has tallied 69 goals on the year and 17 assists. Only two other Trojans have tallied double figures in goals scored on the season, Randlett who has netted 16 and freshman Luis Vasquez who has knocked home 14 this year. The Trojans have only allowed 11 goals on the season as six starters boast all conference honors in the South Mountain Athletic 2A/3A.

A young team that never quits, that’s how head coach Jason Zak describes his Marvin Ridge team that makes the school’s third appearance in the NCHSAA State Championship Match. The Mavericks have won each of their previous appearances, the last of which came in 2013. Battle-tested throughout the year, the Mavericks enter the game with three wins over defending 3A Champions Wed-dington under their belt. The first matchup with the Warriors was an exciting see-saw affair that Marvin Ridge took 5-4. The final matchup between the two conference rivals came in the fourth round as the Mavericks nipped the Warriors 4-3 in overtime. They followed that win up with an overtime thriller in the Regional Finals defeating A.C. Reynolds 4-3 after trail-ing 2-0 early in that game. Marvin Ridge is led by junior Matt Winesette with 22 goals on the year. The Mavericks are scoring 4.2 goals per contest with their only three losses of the season coming against 4A competition.

The Tigers are making their fifth appearance in an NCHSAA Soccer Championship Match and first since 2009. They are seeking their first state championship since 1983. As a team Chapel Hill averages four goals per game while only allowing 0.7 goals per contest. The Tigers are led by Sam Linker who has scored 18 time and dished out 13 assists on the year. Senior captain Paul McLaughlin has added 13 goals in his final campaign with the team. Senior Aidan McCormick has played the lion’s share of the minutes in between the woodwork for Chapel Hill, only allow-ing 12 goals on the year with seven shut outs to his credit.

Porter Ridge makes their first appearance in an NCHSAA State Soccer Championship Match after holding off Hough 2-1 in the Regional Finals. The Pirates are powered by a strong core group of senior leadership that have battled their way through a tough schedule unblemished. The Pirates truly began to believe that they had something special happening this year when they defeated Weddington, who was then ranked #1 nationally, 1-0. They only got stronger as the season went along as the Pirates built momentum until a 2-0 shutout win in round four of the playoffs over defending 4A Champion South Mecklenburg. Karl-Heinz Reichert leads Porter Ridge with 27 goals and 23 assists on the season. Jackson Wheatley also provides some offensive fire power with 21 goals on the year. The Pirates are giving up only 0.35 goals per game as Julio Rangel patrols the box, allowing only 10 goals on the year with 19 clean sheets. The Pirates are scoring just over 3 goals per match.

A senior-laden Green Hope club came into the season with State Championship ambitions and a new head coach. “We take pride in victories, but more importantly, we have fun playing the game,” said head coach David Corsbie. The quick ball movement and ability of each player to be successful 1-on-1 has helped bolster a powerful attack that averages 4.3 goals per game. Senior Connor Munz leads the Falcons with 20 goals and 14 assists on the year, with fellow senior Anthony Boswell close behind at 18 goals on the campaign. In total five Falcons have scored double-digit goals with the team’s leading assist-man Camden Hol-brook, Jacob Sciandra and Jonah Murrane all netting better than ten goals in the year. A pair of seniors have split the goaltending duties with Mason Zlotnik and Jason Kendall combining to allow only 17 goals on the season. A solid back line has helped the two keepers face only 91 shots this year.
