1 hours session on the Alaska ELA Standards
Objectives:
After this session...
you will understand the organization of the standards.
you will begin to differentiate rigor from difficulty.
you will align content area OU’s and EQ’s with ELA standards.
you will continue the document for personal use when developing future ELA units that have strong alignment through the stages.
ELA Standards Big Idea
How students read, understand, interpret, analyze, and respond to a variety of texts.
Foundation Skills K-5
Explicitly taught K-5
Will be taught in our curriculum, but will not be explicit all the time in our units.
Vocabulary should be highlighted in all units
Locate the Graphic Organizer- Handout 2
Vocabulary
Content Areas- Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening
10 Anchor Standards each for reading (information and literary) & writing
6 Anchor Standards each for Speaking and Listening, and Language
Each Anchor Standard has grade specific standards that, if followed each grade level, will lead to mastery of that Anchor Standard at the conclusion of 12th grade

Summary:

The tasks in our units need to demand students to use high-level thinking skills to show mastery

In grade level teams our on your own, do part 1 of the ELA Presentation Handout 1
Part 1: Look at the content area Overarching Understandings and Essential Questions for the NSBSD English Language Arts CAIM project. Match your grade specific standard to the content area OU and EQ that best represents that standard. Start with the reading standards for literature and work your way through the standards.
